I’ve got a 39K mile 1990 LS400 parked in the driveway since the pandemic, I guess it’s rotting by this master mechanics definition. All the fluids need changing, and the PS is heavy. Who know what else it needs in maintenance needs, new tires for sure. The engine and trans drove PERFECT last time I drove it. I did change the battery, bare handed, didn’t get a speck of dirt on my hands, that’s how clean the engine compartment is after 33 years. So…suffice to say, I am glued to these videos. I’m not doing any of the work, bad back, but I’m getting motivated to tow it to a highly rated mechanic after watching these video’s Thanks so much! This person has a great demeanor. Very entertaining to watch,

This video almost convinced me that I can do the timing belt all by myself. I probably can, but I'd rather pay my trusted mechanic to do it for me. He's the type of guy to clean parts as he works, much like yourself, which is why I've trusted him for over 10 years. I installed Vredestein Quatrac Pro on my LS last year and have been happy. I also live in the Chicago area and they came from Tire Rack with a date code that was less than a year old so you don't have to worry about old stock sitting around. Can't comment on their winter performance since I use snow tires in the winter and I avoid salty/slushy roads in the LS but the reviews say they're not bad. This car even with snow tires doesn't handle all that great in the snow so probably better to drive something else if you have the option to.

This is a fascinationg series to watch. CCN will be bringing this car back to its original condition. What I am most interested in are all the rubber parts. All rubber deteriorates over time. Hoses, rubber bushings, trim pieces etc. Quality ones from Toyota can last a long time. I look forward to seeing how CCN handles the rubber subframe mounts, rubber bushings in the suspension, and any other rubber trim pieces that need to be replaced.

It sounds odd but when cleaning a vertical gasket surface like that where I'm not worried about particulates falling into the engine, I will use a magic eraser and solvent to clean the gasket surface along with a plastic razor blade. Really fast with no risk of damaging the mating surfaces.

Entertaining and informative. I'm glad I'm not the only "nut" that talks to himself while working, I know some of your chatter was for the camera, but I feel better about myself knowing you probably do some yapping while working! Were the "one use only" bolts for the water pump?? If so, why? Did they have "lock patch" on the threads? Again, "details are everything". And yeah, previous repairs were not perfect. But, imagine going to your boss in the shop saying the car would have to remain unfinished/unreturned due to the wrong hose clamps! You know what the boss would say: "put the damn worm clamps on it and send it on down the road". Again, I agree with you totally, but many techs don't have the luxury of being able to keep the car to do everything correctly. I was very fortunate when I worked in the boatyard. My boss gave me the freedom I wanted to do things right. On the other hand, I was very fair with him as well, and did much of my detail stuff on my own time without charging the customer of the shop. Most of our customers were repeat customers, so details that couldn't be attended to could always be straightened out when the boat came back for winterization...

@@planefan5812 I much prefer a timing belt I can easily maintain rather than a timing chain that will eventually start leaking oil through the timing cover, or stretching the chain around 150K. i am an original owner of a 2006 Ls430 with 620,000 miles on it. My vehicle was dealer maintenanced until 5 years ago and then I began to do the maintenance myself. i have experienced 1st hand much of the challenges you have shown in your videos. I absolutely love this car. i have an original motor and transmission. I did have a problem with my transmission with hard downshift bangs, but i was able to have it fixed by replacing the valve body with the trans in the car and having the computer sent out to be resoldered. Oil has been changed every 5000 miles. My biggest mistake with the car was letting the dealership convince me that the transmission fluid was lifetime and never need to be replaced . At about 580,000 the trans started to have hard downshifts and slipping noise. i drained the trans fluid and then ran the car 6 times over a week since you only drain 2.75 quarts at a time. I then drop the pan changed the filter and refilled the system. The slipping screaching went away but the hard down shift was still there. When i had the valve body replaced we were able to add 8.5 quarts of toyota trans fluid. i am amazed with what you are doing with your 2005 ls430 and enjoy your episodes immensely.

Your attention to detail is amazing. Goes to show how mechanics not familiar with Lexus could get it wrong. That would have caused issues later on.
