Mine reached 600 mi and I also think 400 bucks is too much. The user manual says we should only do oil change by 600 miles but after watching this video with that dark oil coming out and some metal debris I will definetly do the same you did and also by myself. This is a duper bike and taking good care of it is crucial. Thank you so much for the video. Very well done! Good rides!

Awesome video and thanks for posting it. As a 2021 1250GS owner and being sick and tired of the poor and expensive BMW service here in Germany I‘ll do all this stuff myself as soon as the warranty period is over. Iwill keep on coming back to your channel for more informative and great content. Keep itup and ride safe!

I think the best part of any video is the comment section. All the brainpower used to correct every minute of the video. Seriously now. I do all my own maintenance. I have for years. I use oil that is rated for the application and usually not the bike brand. I like amsoil so I use it in everything. Do some research. Most oil filters are made by one or two manufacturers so as long as there is a cross reference I'll get whatever fits. I try for K&N because of the nut on the end of the filter. As far as the cost vs doing it yourself, I take some pride in knowing how to do things myself and am not afraid of getting my hands dirty. There's a lot of satisfaction in doing it yourself. Cost is irrelevant. I can afford it but would rather do it myself. Cars, trucks, moto, lawnmower. Whatever.

Run the bike until warm so the oil drains more efficiently. You could drain the sump whilst changing the final drive oil. Reinstalling bolts with old thread locker is a no-no. Threadlocker is anaerobic meaning it cures in the absence of air. It has cured and sealed already so brush it off and apply a couple of drops to the start of the thread.

Excellent video very well explained without rabbiting on about stuff that is nothing to do with the task in hand well done 👍 Great Tutorial which has given me the confidence to do my 600mile service rather than pay the Dealer £300 and they said it’s not necessary to replace the drive oil ??? When I said according to the book it should be replaced they said well that’s up to you 😫 in other words they don’t do it and your video clearly shows it’s important and needs to be done as the oil was Black 😉

I know I'm late to the game on this video, but what a great little tutorial! Thorough yet concise, you covered it all. I just hit 600 miles on my '23 GSA, and like you, I will make a short video to memorialize the service. I don't need BMW balking should I have a warranty claim. The initial 600 mile oil change, final drive oil change/service is now pushing $500.00 at my dealership. I prefer doing my own work and taking the time to make certain it's done right. Just a shame that BMW will not provide for sale their service manuals to their customers. I have to wonder if this is in reaction to the US ruling that BMW & Harley can no longer void warranties if standard service is not conducted by authorized dealerships. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to produce and post this ...cheers!!!

Missing: - application of thread locker on the cantilever bolt - replacement of crush washer on FD oil fill plug bolt - cleaning and re-application of final drive boot sealant grease on mating surfaces - replacement of crush washer on engine oil drain plug bolt BMW also recommends replacement of the FD oil drain plug O-ring but as this bike is relatively new and if you didn't observe damage to the O-ring, you can clean and re-use. If you're anal enough to grease cardan shaft rear splines at 600 miles, why didn't you pull the shaft and grease the front splines as well? They can seize -- which isn't as much of an issue for riding as it is when it comes time to replace the shaft. There was a stop-sale/safety recall on R1250GS bikes last year that requires dealers conduct a shaft test and FD housing drain-hole/vent install that you can't do at home. If you haven't had this performed, it takes about an hour. If your bike fails they'll replace your shaft. They'd be required to do the test and drain-hole/vent install if it hasn't been done yet and your bike was both in warranty and under 30K miles. Also also, I'm assuming you're in the US and therefore are protected by the Magnusn-Moss Warranty Act. It's on the mfg to prove something you did wrong would void a warranty, so this video -- while informative to your viewers -- isn't required. Harley Davidson was in the news last Oct ('22) over this and lost their claims to void customer warranties over it, specifically in regards to regular maintenance such as this.

I did mine too. The oil in the rear wheel gearbox was very dirty with a lot of black in it. Engine oil was still like new. I like this bike but the engine and driveline vibrations are beginning to get on my nerves, especially the pulsating vibration at about 3200 rpm when accelerating and handlebars vibration at over 4500 RPM. My single cylinder KLR650 is a lot smoother and less vibrating. A BMW master mechanic said that the vibration is normal. He said I need to try to keep Engine RPM above 4000 RPM when possible. Weird.

Hey Jayelwin! I changed the final drive and engine oil in my 2022 R1250 GSA, as per your awesome video! Worked like a charm! No problems at all, and reviewed your video several times to get it right. You made this easy for me to change out the final drive and engine oil. It was the new 600 mile service that the dealer wanted $600! They also refused to reset the reminder display after doing it myself, so I just took an adventurous ride to a BMW dealer in another town and had an awesome time on a springtime Saturday. It might not be the cleanest thing to do given how the oil filter is positioned, but shouldn't you prime it before putting it in order to make sure that the engine never runs dry or is that not really a factor/concern?
@jayelwin
@jayelwin 3 жыл бұрын
When you start the engine it pumps oil through, and fills the filter. That’s why you need to fill with oil and start the engine and then top off. Car or motorcycle, every filter I’ve ever removed has been full.
@macr88
@macr88 3 жыл бұрын
You can prime a filter but it isn’t necessary, the oil is still where it needs to be and the second or two it takes the pump to prime the filter under no load is no big deal, especially with synthetics these days.

I would also add that the spec for the final drive fluid is 70W80 and NOT 75W90. I'm sure the Rotella T6 is controversial to many, but I am mostly okay with it. The main reason that diesel oil is not also gasoline rated is because of the Zinc and Phosphorus, which is bad for catalytic converters. So if your engine burns any oil at all, you are over a longer period of time burning up your cat...unless you burn tons of oil, which means it'll be much quicker
@jayelwin
@jayelwin 3 жыл бұрын
The final drive oil that’s been recommended by BMW since 1970 is 75W 90. The BMW branded oil is that rating. Also diesel engines have catalytic converters just the same as gasoline engines. www.bobsbmw.com/store/product/bmw-synthetic-final-drive-oil-75w-90-one-quart
@DearMajesty
@DearMajesty 3 жыл бұрын
@@jayelwin it's right there in the owners manual. The 1250's take 70W80. I doubt the 75W90 would cause much harm if any though. As for diesel engines, their catalytic converters and emissions equipment is completely different to those of gasoline engines. Both of these are facts you can verify yourself!

@@DearMajesty BMW didn’t change the rear drive from the liquid cooled 1200 when they went up to the 1250. It’s the identical part. Appreciate this, but it won't get you out of voiding the warranty unless you're a BMW certified mc mechanic. At least, according to the dealer that's how they roll. I don't use dealer service for anything, due to years of shitty results with cars and bikes. Taking my chances and hoping the engineering and quality control won't put me in the rare situation where I might need to use the warranty. Figure I'll contact BMW directly if I do and hope they have mercy.

The only thing they'll moan about, is that the TFT dash and ECU never had the updated software, having my F750gs serviced on its 600 mile service in a couple of weeks, just so I can get the software update, as new bikes sold don't have the updated software version to this day, only from when the design was first released. So getting this done by the dealership, and will then from that point, will be doing all my own servicing, always serviced my bikes, but for the 1st I need the dealership to give me the updated software, which is a right bugger, have a gs911 to the clear and reset service times etc.

One question though: I know the final drive lube is highly recommended by the owner community, but is it part of the manufacturer's scheduled "break-in" service? The owner's manual is vague about what specifically is part of the "break-in service." I am definitely going to check the final drive lube, but not sure if it needs to be done in the 300 to 750 mile interval which is when the "break-in" service is required. Thanks!

Is it possible to make an appointment with these dealers and get it done, in and out, in 1-2 hours? This throws a wrench in my trip planning.

Recommend using aluminum foil to keep the oil off the exhaust, just tent it over it.

Just a little tip/heads-up concerning the warranty. I am German and we have a really nice bulletin board over here, where people can post their experiences. Let me tell you: there are some posts on here where BMW would partly deny warranty (either at all or after a specific amount of time) in case, not every service has been done at the BMW dealership. I am not saying that this might happen in your case but you might wanna re-check with BMW North America (if doing and filming the service yourself is sufficient enough)

In the US we have the Magnuson-Moss warranty act. That protects us and very specifically states we can keep the warranty even if we do our own or third party service. Companies have tried to weasel their way out and have been punished by the FTC. Now the issue that does void warranty’s are things that modify the normal operation like if you added a supercharger to the bike and then something blew.

EU-law also allows you to do your service or have a third party do it without the warranty being effected. The service has to documented though, with pictures, receipts or a video :)

2 questions : what is the source for all the various torque specs? And I'm hoping that turning off the service interval warning is in the rider menus somewhere?

So I replaced the stock with a Sargent and after 400 miles really didn’t like it and thought it was no better. So I got this Corbin and feel it is much better. Also leather. All around better seat. Seats are funny gotta try a bunch. My 2007 has a saddlemen. It’s not 100% perfect either.

Great video.. question for you. If I was to do the maintenance myself. do i need to video record it too for warranty purposes?
@jayelwin
@jayelwin 3 жыл бұрын
If you’re in the US you need some kind of proof. A video is overkill. I was told you can save itemized receipts showing the purchase of what you needed, like oil and a filter, etc.

You just have to take notes, you don't even need receipts. Just write dates and what service you did. But the more you have the better.

@@jayelwin to be fair to manufacturers, they shouldn’t have to pay the cost of an engine rebuild if one decides to use a cheap filter just as an example. Once you’re outside the warranty period you can do as you please.

You done a good job but better to know how much engine oil to put in 1st. The only problem with this is a dealer will use their computer system to input release code for your engine to enable it to go higher revs and faster. Also you will void your warranty doing it yourself! On a 12000 mile, major service the valves need checking and adjustment.
@jayelwin
@jayelwin 2 жыл бұрын
This is a 600 mile first service. We all have the little plug that opens up the higher performance that you can attach once you do the 600 mile service. Also in the US you do not void your warranty by doing your own service. Maybe in your country you do.

Same in Australia, doesn't have to be a BMW mechanic, it can be 3rd party, but needs to be a qualified mechanic or your warranty is done. Also, did you really torque a single wheel bolt up without the other bolts in?
