Taking over the reigns from Class 90 90001 'Royal Scot', LNER A4 60007 'Sir Nigel Gresley' took Steam Dreams' London to Durham and Newcastle from Tyneside back to the Capital. The run would stop at Durham and York to pick up passengers and follow the ECML in its entirety for the journey back to London.
A well timed trip to the North East to see family allowed an unusual location for this one; the sight of the former station at Plawsworth, 4 miles north of Durham. Some strong gusts of up to 50mph made for a bit of a challenge filming today, as we look at Penshaw Monument, over 5½ miles from the railway bridge at Plawsworth. The sun was dodging the clouds as we waited for Sir Nigel, but luckily as she rolled around the curve from Langley Moor, the clouds stayed away! The driver opens up on the straight and the exhaust from the double chimney can at last be heard powering over the wind. In perfect sunlight and fitted with a Tyne - Tees Pullman headboard, 60007 cheerfully hoots to the gallery of photographers on the bridge as she travels on to pick up passengers in Durham. Class 47 D1924 'Crewe Diesel Depot' was idling at the rear.
The train was caught again further up the line at Croxdale but the lighting wasn't as good and the wind was much stronger so I wasn't particularly happy with it so just the one shot this time!
