I always replaced the na blocks with a 257 or 255 also..they are just better quality in my opinion anyway but I did have a chance to build a cool high compression NA 2.5 engine for a customer and along with learning a few new tricks I had a ton of fun with that project that the customer used for (I'm not sure what class) SCCA Rally cross events that I had not paid much attention to beforehand but seeing the torque curve we were able to get out of that engine with basically just a set of custom pistons a set of camshafts and a super small amount of port work on the heads mostly just unshrouding the valves and a decent valve job and not much parts wise beyond that he had v5 (I believe) sti ra drivetrain swapped in with 4.44 final drive just a super cool pretty low budget honestly build that was just different... dont get me wrong I enjoyed and greatly appreciated every Subaru that came to my shop but alot of the work was the same thing over and over and having a completely different challenge come in was just cool...
