mike little word of advice.when the boards start popping op at the end of the cut, flip the cant 18 degrees and cut from that side till they start moving again, then flip it over and repeat.it is a pain with a manual mill like ours, but it will make more stable, and true lumber.maple is nice wood,it is a little dull off the mill, but shines once dried, and finished.if you get a chance cut some spalted maple, its the cream of the crop, and you can get some good coin for it.have fun,we love running ours for the same reason as you folks.

First let me say I am not a sawyer or arborist but someone who has done a fair amount of woodworking over decades. I agree with you that nice cherry is awesome and I personally like working with cherry. Don't give up on the maple, depending on what variety of maples you have on your property you may find some very beautiful wood for milling. I live in northern New England and the varieties we tend to have are sugar maple and a couple of varieties that are harder. we call those varieties "Rock maple". If you check out your maples you may find that some of your maples yield beautiful "birdseye" grains that are highly sought after so they might be a very good commercial opportunity for your milling output you were talking about in various videos. Best of luck!

Very therapeutic watching OWTM videos . Great work on Hunter's costume Melissa, I bet he had the best costume at his day centre. Mike I don't have a mill but I find myself now analysing my firewood trees and thinking that would make a good log to mill, ha ha. Mike maybe you can start up a pool fund for Melissa so us subscribers can donate to it, I'm sure you would raise enough money in no time for the pool. I'd be happy to make the first donation

Hi M & M, I love your family videos. May I suggest that you cut the remnant log slabs aka scabs to firewood length and then split them as they make wonderful fast-starting kindling. If bundled they could become "Hunter's Fast Start Firewood" for his budding business. I have a great friend who is a second-generation sawer and his mill slabs have become my go-to kindling for my cabin fireplace. Keep on being the busy beaver Outdoorgans, it is fun to see and inspiring too. Nancy of the Woods

Closing on my rural land in 2 weeks, the barn plan includes a 16'x48' Lean-To addition for Woodmizer. Land is covered in trees just waiting to become useful lumber. I had been considering the Norwood sawmills, but the LX-150 comes with the configuration I want, and seeing it in use here helped me to decide to go this route rather than add the options to the HD36 and come out about the same price. I think I might wait till they have the diesel option upgrade available though; they say "soon".

First: Yes~Saw Hunter in costume and he looked great[better beard than me]. Maple is one wood I like, made couple of bookcases from it. Turned out pretty good for just a 7 1/4" power saw plus. Used dark maple stain on them [one thumb up]. Happy to hear someone else rambles on too. . . but don't start answering yourselves - - - bad juju! Was 38 degrees down here in NC when I got up. Hey Mike, I think you should consider a new shed or barn on your property. You have reached the point in equipment acquisitions that you need to consider inside storage of them instead of having them in your yard outside. They are exposed to harsh conditions in the winter months which might damage the engines etc.Maybe put some type of heat for the building to help cure Hunter's wood also. Also, the outbuilding would increase your property value I think.. It's a big step to consider, but I think you have moved up to that level of need. Richard in NC

Hi Mike, I too love the cherry but I must say when I am building cutting boards the main wood I use is Maple and accent with Cherry and Walnut. Also I picked up some Cherry a couple weeks ago from my supplier here in the Nashville area and was told it was Cherry out of the north east and would be softer than Appalachian Cherry which is becoming hard to get.

you could enclose that swimming pool and use it year round. I like maple for wood turning, cutting boards and furniture. but you might want to cut the planks thicker (8/4 or 12/4) at least some of them. This time of year I make Christmas ornaments on my lathe, maple turns nice.

First bone I ever broke was throwing slabs off my brothers Woodmizer. Broke my thumb when one cantilevered on the pile and hit me hard. That was probably 30 years ago now and he's still doing custom cutting on his mill to this day. You guys met him and his son at the Paul Bunyan festival in Ohio awhile back. I see their mugs on you're video from that event. He introduced me to you're channel and been enjoying the videos. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.

a Few things Mike save your back, raise that saw mill bed up over the ground some. The other things is turn your log so the crack is Horizonal to the bed, also paint the ends of your logs after you cut them down, if your going to mill them. let them set a few days or longer before you mill them, painting the end stops Checking and make the log dry thru the sides not the end, stops stress on the log. We have a saying its all fire wood till you make something out of it. Have a Day

Mike, Can you add a push bar on your sawmill like Out in the Wood has? It pushes the boards to the end of the mill for someone to pick up the board to stack them. That way Melissa would not be putting herself in danger all the time??? Believe me she is going to get hurt sometime. If your working alone you can not use the push bar?

Hey Mike, I mentioned the winch and log skidder combo the other day. You need to check out GP Outdoors #215 and see how this piece of equipment could benefit you.
