In this video you will see a 6010 open root using 1/8" electrode using 1/16" gap and 1/16" land with a 30 degree beveled plate.
Hot pass was done with 5/32" 7010 hyp+ electrode.
This is a practice plate that helps in preparation for the downhill API pipe test.
Plate is much easier to prepare and provides really good welding practice.
Once you have done flat, vertical, and overhead practice plates, you should be ready to weld a 5g pipe test.

Thanks that really helps, my work pushes a non-procedure “procedure” for water pipe with downhand root, one downhand hot/fill pass with 6011 then 7018 cap. I’ve never done downhand before so a lot of my problems are likely skill related, your video made me realize though doing all those passes as one fill pass may be chasing a unicorn.

I hate doing 6010 circles but a lot of people do it I can do it but I prefer the little crescent moons going down hill are like a c type motion, and I while all other positions except uphill I do the upside down t but that’s why I love welding evryone has a different way and you can always change things up great video also I do drag when I can

Hi ya , question ? Ever try a 6010 3g vertical up with DC -- on 3/8 plate 37 deg , 3/32 land and face , I'm not a pro but I'm try to master the 3g position with the help of your videos . I actually switched my Ranger 8 to DC neg and made a root pass vertical up and it seemed to go in really well without any trouble . I'm using Lincoln 5 p 1/8 at 80 amps . Thanks John R.

ABom79 recommended you and I can see why. I wish my eyesight was good enough because I really have enjoyed welding from the second time I saw "the puddle". The first time I was like in Junior High and thought I messed up. I look back on it now and recognize that was the first step into something magical.

Now here's a question I don't think I've heard answered: other than it's the procedure, what's the reason that 6010 is used as the rod for the root instead of the 7010 or 8010 you usually finish the rest of the pipe with?
@andycardin4986
@andycardin4986 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Bill, that is a great question. I cant give you a straight answer on that because I honestly don't know for sure. Maybe it has to do with the fact that re-qualifying a procedure takes alot of money. Also, some pipes dont necessarily need to have 7010 or 8010 throughout the whole joint. If you look in Lincolns catalog, they state that both 7010 and 8010 can be used for open root. That is about as good of a guess I can come up with. Hope that helps
@paulmeersa7162
@paulmeersa7162 2 жыл бұрын
A 6010 gives a lower tensile weld metal that is often more ductile, more crack resistant than a 7010 or 8010. When welding pipelines, structures, things likely to move when putting in the first few passes of an open root joint, the roots are subject to a lot more stress than when the weld is filled out, and can crack easily - especially if you use a strong filler. Usign a weaker, more plastic filler, allows the weld to stretch more before it breaks - if at all. It gives you a bit more leeway to work with in the field when keeping everything perfectly still and stress free is just not a reality. Chewing gum vs crunchy lollies if you like. :) It is not until you are 1/3 to 1/2 the way out that a joint starts to be mechanically strong enough to avoid any serious likelyhood of cracking, typically 1/4" and more full circumference/length. The lower strength also helps [a little bit] to avoid hydrogen induced cracking, typically supplying less carbon allowing more crack resistant microstructures to form....or so the theory goes.

I failed a test similar to this. It was a 1/8th 6011 down hill on a tjoint with half in plates. My puddle was no where near consistent and clean like the puddle in this video infact, the puddle was just going everywhere, and I had a bunch of spatter. I ran the rod at 110 amps. I figured to move quickly going down hill but I just ended up with a real cold thin bead. What could I have done wrong?
