All those “welders” who say you can’t weld downhill clearly never worked with sheet metal or thin gauge material. Some things you can’t weld up or you will blow threw. It really comes down to what the job calls for.

I'm an AWS CWI since December 2013. Whether you weld 'uphill', 'downhilll', your electrode size and selection, all the fitment, root gap criteria, welding gas selection, etc are prescribed in the WPS (Welding Procedure Specification) by the company's / client's welding engineers and metallurgists, after weeks, months, years of weld tests done in labs long before the project ever begins. The only time 'we' decide how we want to make the weld is in our garages at home.

My father was a welder but he could also do everything else, shear, layout, braking, weld and polish. He learned the trade at East New York Vocational High School. He started working in the late 1940s. In the beginning he welded the custom electrical panels they used in New York Buildings. When I was a teen he was working in custom kitchen equipment. Later he got certification to weld the piping in nuclear power plants. hen we first moved to Florida he was relining the insides of cement trucks. That was probably the nastiest job he ever had. I worked with him as a helper before I was drafted. We'd go out and weld new ends on dish tables when a dish washing machine was being replaced. That meant Sunday night in the big hotels because that was the only time the kitchens were closed. He had a very good reputation and he was always getting calls from people wanting to hire him. He could design a kitchen and handle everything necessary. He even did synagogues with all the kosher requirements. It's too bad he never saw videos lie this one. That was one fancy welding machine. All he had to work with was a 90 Amp Lincoln welding machine. His rod work looked liked he'd used a Heliarc machine. I never had to beat something straight after he finished. There was another welder who was known or his speed. He'd weld two pieces into a 90 degree dish table with clamps everywhere on it. When he was done I'd take all the clamps off and the table was warped from the high heat used. Then I'd beat it to straighten it out. This instructor is a very good welder. That was a very pretty weld he did on the pipe. It made me think of my father.

Agreed to a certain extent but with a small correction it depends on the construction code and the customers specifications, we regularly weld ASME B31.8 facilities following ASME Section IX welding procedures welding 6010/8010 downhill.... if the procedure proves your choice of filler metal and direction can achieve good chemical and mechanical properties along with the customer’s approval you may certainly use downhill in a lot of situations.....certain codes such as ASME Section VIII Divison 1 used for pressure vessels may restrict you from using downhill for construction of these products and require low hydrogen with tend to be uphill rods.

When I did my testing ASME was all uphill. It’s kinda odd too. Staybolys are all one weld without stopping, on a horizontal sheet that impossible to do

I have used welding electrode rods in the past I called Fleet rods which are used for rooting pipe .which I would have the stinger on the minus and earth on the positive which the weld freezes quicker and the hot pass fill and cap swap them back over and used low hydrogen rods for that.

I just did a 6 months welding course and I didn't get any certifications. Very disappointed in my experience there but I'm working on getting my own welder because this is a new industry for me that I'm really liking and hoping to get better. I'm hoping I can land a job maybe apprenticeship or something that I can grow with
@jwafterours3 жыл бұрын
jbone; the only cert you can get after 6 months training is the one for turning the machine on so don't be disappointed and stick with it. imvho it takes about ten years welding/burning experience to be a good asset to a iron shop.

That remote is awesome!! I get so flustered because there's so much to learn in this trade. I only have my 3G SMAW certificate. so far and very little experience. I've been a machinist almost my whole adult life, but I took an adult welding program at night a couple years ago because I've always been interested in welding. I wish I could go back in time and take welding as a vocation in h.s.

In highschool many years ago I was learning to be a machinist as my vocation. I asked my instructor to teach me how to weld and he wanted to know why I wanted to weld. I told him, in case I have to. I'm glad he started me out.

depends what I'm using and what I'm welding, if I'm using a MIG or Flux Core I usually weld downhill, and Stick my job only uses 6011 and 7018, I found it better to weld downhill for the 6011 and uphill for the 7018, I'm no expert but on thick metals 1/4"to 1" steal the weld went completely through nicely on both sides. Im still learning, hard when a boss can't weld, hard to learn
@robertblackshear89632 жыл бұрын
Yes. The 6011 also runs very well downhill. I had to weld the thin doorways on coastguard vessels downhand with 6911 and they always looked great. A boss once told me I had the downhand down packed lmao. He was impressed at what he saw.

@@gcwelds3481 It would be nice if someone at school taught this shit instead of just telling me which rod to use and about what temperature it should be at. There seems to be a lot of things you can do to affect the amps or voltage, but they never really teach that. I'm sometimes in my booth confused as to why a weld isn't turning out right and not really knowing what to do other than turn the voltage down or up. That's about all I really know and about to graduate. I get porosity sometimes which is about all I do wrong these days, but I have no clue why the shit happens. My Instructor said I was welding too low, but then I'm thinking, but I was in the range of the rod, so how the fuck is that possible? I thought I was doing it right? I was running above 70 and more like at around 80, so not sure how that's too cold. It seemed to be making a weld to me and doing a lot better than at higher temps.

Man what I wouldn't have given for that remote when I worked in the shipyard. Inverters could be several hundred feet away. And could require a 5 minute walk/ crawl through multiple spaces/decks to access. But absolutely correct. It absolutely depends on what regulations you have to follow. But it's a technique that is good to know regardless. Was one of the most failed tests. Usually due to lack of fusion. And like all techniques, practice, practice, practice.. Great video👍👍
