When checking the neck relief you have to eliminate the height of the nut. Imagine if the string slots were cut too high, the neck would seem right when it wasn't. The standard method is to hold the fret where the neck joins the body, with a capo on at the first fret. Typically, problem neck bend will show up where the neck joins the body, so the test you did here wouldn't pick that up.
@periurban
@periurban 3 жыл бұрын
Also, you should adjust the action before the intonation, and do both with the guitar in a playing position, or if you are doing it flat then support the body instead of the neck. Then when the action is right check the intonation again.

1. The noise from the knobs could've been cured with an electrical spray, which cleans and lubricates, they're just very dry. 2. When testing intonation, ALWAYS have the guitar on its side, never lay it down. Pitch of string can go sharp by a few cents laying on its back. 3. FFF is acronym I use to remember intonation adjustment. Fret, Flat, Forward. If (F)retted note is (F)latter than harmonic at 12th, move saddle (F)orward. 4. To test neck relief for truss rod adjustment, hold string down at 1st and last fret with little fingers, check 9th to 12th for gap, tap with thumb to test. My preferred gap is around 1mm - 1.5mm. 5. Order should be, 1st truss rod, 2nd string height, 3rd intonation. Fine tune string height after intonation, and recheck intonation again.

Two things...1) I appreciate the effort and honesty you put into this video series. Need more of this on KZbin! 2) Learning to set up a guitar the way you like will make a huge difference in the quality of your guitar playing experience. Knowing how to make guitars feel the way you want them to is a skill that rewards you with every string change. Bonus thought 3) no guitar should be judged for quality out of the box. Set it up how you like it, then you can give a true assessment.

I like commercial lubrication for the nut, and I also lubricate the saddles. Using a feeler gauge for neck relief is something I find very important in my process, but you’ve found something that works for you. I would recommend a capo on the first position to take out any variable from the nut height.
@rharris51
@rharris51 Жыл бұрын
The poster briefly mentions the string height gauge starting around 16:04. After getting one of these EART SSS's I tried to use my own string height gauge to measure the neck relief according to instructions in the guitar's manual. The range provided is .3mm to .5mm at the eighth fret while holding the string down at the first fret and at the junction to the body which I interpret as "where the neck meets the body. " You can't use a string height gauge to measure such a small gap. It would be mainly just guesswork since the smallest increment is .5mm. What you'd have to do, I think, is use a feeler gauge. Some guitar maintenance kits come with feeler gauges for this very purpose. His method of setting the neck relief could produce acceptable results but consider using a feeler gauge and the specs from the manual for best results. Incidentally, my EART SSS, purchased in August 2022, arrived with a poor setup and a bridge that did not entirely cover the cavity nor match the Amazon product page.

With all the youtube vids on guitar string change and setup, it's really a no brainer to do a setup on a guitar. One month in as a beginner I decided to change the strings on my new Yamaha PAC 112V and a used Michael Kelly Patriot Custom (LP style) as well as do a complete setup and fret polishing (no leveling needed). $20-$30 dollars worth of tools/lube, new NYXL strings, fretboard cleaning and fret polishing and complete setup (relief, action & intonation) based on youtube vids - both guitars play and sounds much better. Honestly, t's not that hard to do.....just take it easy on changes to the relief.

Capo the 1st fret, fret 6th string where the neck meets the body (17th or so), use a feeler gauge to measure the gap between the top of the 8th fret and the bottom of 6th string. That measurement is the neck relief depending on fretboard radius. It is usually between .008 and .012, you can go lower or higher it depends on the guitar and the player.

Ryan, both of your videos are very good. I find that I can take a plastic hammer to the frets and level the board that way without fret leveling and crowning. Also, not sure if there was any shielding done to pickup cavities but I would probably use shielding paint from guitarfetish site. I've shielded with household aluminium foil before and rubber cement and it works but it's a lot of work. Next time I'll try the paint. I think it's best if people learn to do their own setup because that's the only way they will get close to their desired result. A tech can not guess at what you like not even if you explain it to him. You would have to be there and guide the tech as he is adjusting things. I actually like the beak for the headstock and it reminds me of kramer pacer classic. I like it better than the meat hook of harley benton guitars. Not a fan of ibanez neck so this guitar is probably not for me, I like squier better. Not sure but it also seems like they've rounded the edges of the fretboard slightly. I've been doing it on my strats and it's a day and night difference especially if you play with thumb over the neck edge like hendrix. I remove the frets and then round the edges with sandpaper but I've done it with frets still on but it's harder.

I'm all for 'affordable' guitars and gear, and I normally quite like satin paint jobs...... but there's just something that I find hideous about this Eart. For knob removal, IC chip pullers for removing chips on circuit boards, which are very inexpensive, work fairly well. I have also found that those cheap pry tools for removing paint can lids, one on each side, will pop them loose. if you're removing some directly on the finish, just slide some masking tape under the knobs, and, of course, use a little care. True Story!

periurban is correct with the neck relief. But, in terms of lubricant for your strings, I personally cater to whoever I’m setting up the guitar for. Graphite, your included lube in some adjustment kits or the commercial “ Nut Sauce” works just fine overall. My own personal choice is the commercial “Nut Sauce”, but it’s just my preference. The nice thing about the nuts at Gibson is that they are a mixture with graphite in the mix, so you shouldn’t have to add too much if you need to for whatever kind of bendable bridge type you use. Another way you could intonate your guitar is by using the harmonic at the 12th fret, but again, it’s a personal preference. Lastly, I’d probably stretch the strings after doing a rough tune, that way you get the strings to stay in tune easier. I am also a guitar adjuster at the Gibson USA Factory in Nashville and have been since April, but overall great job at setting up this guitar for your playing style. 👍👍

Interesting video. I do like the mini chickenhead knobs on it. I will say that a wrap or two around the string post will probably result in some string issues. I do the over wrap which is where the first wrap goes above where the string slides through. I then proceed ro wrap it down towards the base of the post. The reason for this is it adds a few degrees of downward pressure so that you strings are less likely to buzz or drone in the nut slot. It's a trial and error feel, because a change in string guages can impact how many wraps it takes to get the string down the post. The main reason I critique this is because every knucklehead that I have seen with tuning issues almost always only has one wrap or two. Once I put on a set of fresh strings and get the wraps in on the post, to me it feels like there is more vibration in the neck and the guitar. Almost always this fixes the issues unless they need a new nut because they go with lighter guage strings and the slots are too wide. Another lofi tech tip is save the length of string you just clipped off that new string and use it to floss the string slot. This helps with any burs and it is EXACTLY the same diameter of the string you just put on. You can also use it to help get graphite into the slot.😎👍✨

I know that the neck profiles are different and it is kinda comparing apples to oranges but I was wondering if there is a huge jump in quality by going to the Sire vs the Eart. 14:55 yes every single time! and the bass strings only give me more anxiety! Also in regard to tying the strings at the tuners, I have had that improve my tuning stability, but it is not necessary. As long as you don't have way to many wraps around the tuning peg, it will be fine. A string with too many or uneven wraps around the tuner can slip and lose tension and sometimes even cause an audible ping. The way I tie it isn't too difficult to unwrap but a needle nosed pliers is necessary. Having locking tuners will get rid of this potential problem without having to do any tying and you don't even need a full wrap around the tuning peg. The method I use is from Ibanez and can be seen on their acoustic guitar manuals.

@@60CycleHumcast it's something I'd love on a Black or a neon Purple guitar but on a more traditional burst style it's a little too gaudy for the finish.

I agree with what you said about being a perfectionist. A guitar salesman that I've dealt with all may life said I have perfect pitch and the guitar is not a perfect instrument. I had to learn to live with it. You can get very close though.

It would be nice to see the Eart tele style with that satin finish, especially over the flame veneer they have on them.

In a hardtail that I like, I invest in a TUSQ nut. It's self-lubricating and is a major upgrade from the stock plastic nut. Feeler gauges are cheap but great guitar investment tools. I got mine from Harbor Freight.

I started playing in 1977. I am ALWAYS freaked out while tuning fresh strings. I have a slash scar on my right wrist, so the danger is there. BTW, love your honesty.

If the strat style pickup has a bar magnet underneath like these, it's almost certainly ceramic (aka ferrite). It's possible the bar magnet could be alnico, but such design seems pretty unlikely. The polepieces are steel/iron slugs. They're often polished, or possibly plated, as you noted. Almost always use molded plastic bobbins. Some ceramic pickups have longer polepieces that extend under the pickup, and two narrower ceramic bar magnets on either row of the polepieces. Traditional Strat pickups use six alnico slug magnets. No bar magnet underneath. Alnico magnets usually seem to have a ground finish, though some may be tumbled for a satin finish. I suppose it's possible to give them a polished shiny finish. The finer details, such as wire gauge, steel slug composition, bobbin size, magnet strength and more, are considerations in tailoring the sound of these pickups.

You can pull knobs off easiest by either slipping an old t-shirt under and around the pot shaft to pull up, or getting two zip-ties to slide under and pull with equal load on both sides of the pot shaft...no fancy Stewmac tool necessary. Thanks for the review of the neck carve. Sounds like I need to stay away. Most Squiers are skinny too (similar width and depth but more wood removed from the shoulders).

I appreciate both videos about this particular guitar. The first one did seem like you really wanted to hate it because there was so much hype about it. In the end you established that, while it is by no means a $200 git that is better than a Fender at 5 times the price, it is a decent instrument that is worth the price tag plus a bit more. Thank you for what you do. Very entertaining and informative. Btw every string change has me holding my head back in case of breakage and eye slash.

The catch 22 of doing guitar videos is very funny to me. If im enthusiastic about a piece of gear trolls come out of the woodwork to accuse me of being a paid shill, if im conservative and thoughtfully critical (heaven forbid negative) toward a piece of gear other trolls show up to accuse me of having a bias against it.

Just keep doing what you do. Don't let the trolls bother you too much. If you can look yourself in the mirror and know that you are giving an honest "opinion", then that's all that matters.

You should have checked the fret levels with the strings on because the tension makes a difference with the truss rod, especially since it needed a truss rod adjustment anyway. The frets could have actually been level.

I've recommended cheap guitars to friends before but also offered to set them up (truss rod, intonation, action etc) for free, or whatever they wanted to pay. Like you mentioned, people need to learn on a decent guitar so they don't get discouraged by a poor instrument.
