He was carrying stuff with him, like the baggage of being smacked down for being a law enforcement poser when he was fired from the University. Those personality flaws did not make him a terrorist, but it did make him vulnerable when he was falsely accused. It's easy to see why the stress overwhelmed him and he could not recover from the false accusations, and died in mid-life.

I haven't seen the movie, but I'm still hoping to. And I'm still angry about it 24 years later! As soon as it was proven that he couldn't have gotten back to park in the time between the placing of the call to 911 from that public-phone bank and the time he found the bomb - which was two or three days after he became a "person of interest" - I decided that he didn't do it. And it took the FBI three whole months to reach the same conclusion.

@@stevenmaginnis1965 I just watched the movie. I looked up these 60 Min interviews to see Richard Jewell in person. The media shredded his dignity, humiliated him, people called him a loser and poser and of course, they joked about his weight. It's a shame. Several years ago, I helped rescue 4 people from a burning building.(not a big deal IMHO) Luckily, the fire was started by a smoldering ashtray. I got a nice write up in the paper and a few stories on boston news. A guy at the gym shook my hand several days later and one of the courts that I practice in took a few minutes to recognize it. I could not imagine how I would feel if the media had turned on me within days and then labeled me an arsonist or a crazy or a poser etc.

I felt so bad for Richard Jewell in that diner scene. He was in tears and bit into his pastry kinda seeking comfort. I wish that I could have just said "good job" and shook his hand. I watched these 60 Min videos and the movie portrayal was spot-on. Sure, he is a chubby guy who wanted to be a cop but many security guys are like that. I worked as an EMT for a while and guys volunteered at local Fire Departments or worked for barely minimum wage just to work in the EMT field and be heroes and save lives. Sure, some guys were "wannabees" or geeky but they really seemed to want to help and wanted to be EMTs. Sheriff auxiliary and reserve officers were also full of guys who hoped for a chance to work full time in policing. Many moved on, others could not cut it as full-time cops.

I think him biting into that donut in that scene was deliberate as an explanation why he was obese and how this whole ordeal made it worse. He ate to cope. And in the end, all things combined, robbed the world of someone that didn't deserve him.

Most people old enough to remember the arrest of Eric Rudolph know the story. It just took law enforcement years to find him after naming him the primary suspect. He hid out in the North Carolina woods for years. Just an important story to tell because the media has been up to their same tricks.

This is what frustrates me about the nonsense with the Atlanta Journal reporter who some feel was not portrayed properly in the movie. What about Richard Jewell???? So, the reporter is not portrayed the way some media types want but let's not forget the outrageous injustice done to Richard Jewell. The initial media coverage was so biased against him and no one gave the guy a fair shake even though he was a total hero that even though he was eventually vindicated the initial negative assessment of Richard Jewell stuck. You would read over and over that he lived with his Mom like that was a bad thing and he was smeared. I was in Atlanta and walked through that park saying a prayer for him a year ago. May he rest in peace and thank God Clint Eastwood did him right with the movie.

Every time I go downtown to Centennial Olympic Park, I always stop at the place where the bomb exploded and think of Mr. Jewell. His life was destroyed to sell newspapers. No proof, mind you. Just supposition. Labeled him like Wayne Williams, a convicted murderer. That’s not the way we are supposed to do investigations. We saw it again in Boston with the NY Post’s smearing of an innocent man. It doesn’t seem to matter how many times it’s proven that it’s better to be right than first, media companies keep making the same mistakes, damn the consequences of their actions. So glad Eastwood made his film, exoneration even in death is some amount of closure to this sad story.

my understanding is that the feds did nothing wrong.....other than letting it slip that as a matter of procedure they were looking in to everyone involved, which includes the supposed hero, because they didn't have a suspect. Well, the media ran wild with that and basically concocted an entire fictional story. Due to the debacle it turned in to, the feds changed policy on what and how they relay information to the press. The feds gave them an inch, but the unscrupulous media ran a mile with it.

mindeloman when Jewells attorney called the FBI office to speak with Jewell and tell him to get out of there he was told Jewell was not there. It took more calls before they finally admitted he was there. Instead of asking Jewell questions they told Jewell they were making a “training tape” and tried getting information from him that way. The FBI leaked the info that Jewell was a suspect. I would say they are MORE at fault than the media

I knew him after the bombing, when he was a officer in Jefferson Georgia. He was a truly nice guy but you could tell he was scared of what the next second might bring. The government and the mainstream media ruined the last few years of Richard's life. He died a persecuted man who was glad he did what he did but ashamed he had to live in fear. He didn't do it for fame, money or hero status. He did it because it was the right thing to do in the worst situation imaginable. They talk with common sense and empathy about all sides. I don’t even turn in my TV anymore and neither do my kids, so tv reporting may be dying down. @@Dagian_Jade Robert Mueller did a good job cleaning up the mess that was Louis Freeh's FBI, and I don't blame him for the fact that it was Jeff Postell and not an FBI agent who finally caught Rudolph. Mueller was preoccupied by 9/11, and Rudolph was living off the land in a forest so dense, he could have held off an army there. It was pure luck that Postell found him in Murphy, NC.

That's why I laugh at Trump haters who believe everything CNN/MSNBC/Network news reports. I've always been open minded when consuming news media my entire life & even more so since the 2016 election I knew for a fact Trump would win way before the election. How did I know?
