This brings back a lot of my past. When Phil released “What a Day” and “Your Love Broke Through” I was working for Sparrow Records and then shortly after this he was signed to that label and I got to spend sometime with him, what a humble man. They don’t make music like this anymore.

Just thinking back to the era when this was recorded. I first met Phil right after these sessions (he was talking about them and played As The Ruin Falls for us), and did an interview with him for a radio station and which eventually became a magazine cover story (kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4LEnmuke91mrLM). And just thinking of Omartian's contributions to Aja a year or two later, and Producer of the Year for Christopher Cross shortly thereafter. And Knechtel with the piano on Bridge and the guitar solo on Bread's Guitar Man. A TON of musical history represented in that studio that day. This was great. Thanks for sharing!!

The cool thing about Phil Keaggy is that he is one of the most fearless players ever. He seems to always be pushing himself right to the edge and very rarely falls back on stock licks. Sometimes he'll try something and stumble a bit, but then he backs up and takes another run at it and nails it better than intended. He's a true master.

"Ive been waiting so long, Finding You" That was unexpected 15 minutes in! And the scat singing after - how cool was that?! If you want humidity over here go to Auckland (no thanks) they get up around the 90% mark at times. Thank you Sir! You guys were on it! I thought to myself “Hmmmm it’s not Glass Harp? No! Some out take from Emerging? No! But that’s Phil’s parallel Octaves & signature licks and outta space cool tone & it kinda sounds like a combination of the groove from “TIME” or even “HAPPY” but slowed down. I gotta ask Philly if he was using a Morley Wha Wha pedal & I wonder if it’s a Yamaha amp or Fender. 🤔 this knocked my socks off! Your a great talent my friend! What a history you have! Thanks for the kind words at the end. God bless you and yours .

Long live Phil. An absolute treasure, as a guitarist/singer/songwriter, and as a person. If you get the chance to see Phil play, do so.

Thank you @Leland -- My family was a member of the Love Inn Church in Freeville NY back in the early-mid 70's and Phil was on staff there. My step-dad was a great musician in the region and along with his musicality and the superstars he knew and played with, and formative years watching Phil, my love for music was forever planted. This session is so reminiscent of what I listened to growing up. THANK YOU for sharing this lost gem.

Hey Leland. Don't know if you check the comments on these older vids but I'll give it a shot. First of all I'll just mention I've seen you in concert with Jackson Browne and also with James Taylor. That's what my memory tells me anyway. 80s or early 90s. Russ was with you of course. I've know you two as a team going way back to probably the mid or late 70s. I was always checking the studio credits. Anyway, because you are talking about Phil Keaggy here I figured it would be a good place to ask what is a burning question for me. As in it has made me mad for many, many years that Phil is Never on any of those dozens, possibly hundreds of lists of greatest guitarists of all time. Heck, he can't even make a top 100 when it's clear to me that he should be in top 20 lists at least. I saw him live with 2nd Chapter of Acts, who I know you've worked with also, at Calvary Chapel in about 77. It was the tour that they put out the live triple album How the West Was One. To me the answer is clear that the ONLY reason he is not is because it is CCM. Do you have any thoughts on this subject? You're a part of the industry for so many years and have dealt with many of the writers and critics also I'm sure. With the advent of the Internet and everyone who wants to put in the effort can have their own list, it has only served to exasperate this problem. What is your opinion?

There are many incredible musicians that are never in these lists of top players. Phil should be there as well as players like Daryl Stuermer, who is the guitarist with Phil Collins and Genesis. Never a mention … the list of those left out is far longer than those with accolades. So much is political and a popularity contest. I see that with lists of bass players. The only thing that really matters is your passion for what you do and the pleasure it brings to listeners.

@@lelandsklar6363 Thanks for commenting Leland. I agree with all you said, but I wonder if you think Phil IS one of the top 20 of all time and probably the reason he is not recognized is because it is Christian music. One more answer and I'll leave you alone on this. 😏

❤Just seeing this! Thanks so much for sharing stuff like this! It’s so generous of you to do this! Phil and Glass Harp played in our area a lot in early 70’s and I was fortunate enough to have been in a band that got to open for them 3 different times.A rare privilege 🩷. I remember playing jam type things regularly back then….it was the feeling of freedom to let it go….hard to get that vibe nowadays. I really appreciate you sharing your highlights from your illustrious career!it’s inspiring!I sure miss the days in late 60s and early 70s….but time waits for no one …love ya ,take care!

I’m wondering if that’s actually Larry Knechtel playing the organ on this jam? He’s credited as Piano, Fender Rhodes, and Organ on the Love Broke Thru lp, and it does sound like the same person on the album? Absolutely fantastic jam!!!

Don't know if Jerry Garcia and company were taking cues from these guys or if these guys were taking cues from Jerry and co. Great work either way.
