A lot of work has gone into the lure, I hope it turns out well.

+Chalkbalone Meanwhile I'm not so sure anymore , did not estimate well about the weight of the timber material , .....but with the other Whirligigs of abachewood I'd be sure to be able to submit a functional lure for the Secret Santa .On the other hand I'm also eager to see , how this low-buoancy lure would perform , ...not saying , it would not attract fish at all , might only not quite perform the way, that I'm familar to with buoyant Whirligigs ?Greetings , Dieter

+Chalkbalone I have come across that lure in that certain "The Book Of Lures" by Charles K. Fox , introduced at the beginning of part one of this video series . The book was issued in 1978 , if my memory serves me right , ...the author must have been a seasoned man already by that time , as he describes the evolution of lures in the USA as from the 1920's on , and he experienced all of it with his own eyes .The story goes , that one of his fishing buddies had designed the "Whirligig" in 1947 , ....he took over the design from a "Globe" lure , which is a topwater lure sporting a rotating head , but unable to dive down .That guy just added those distinctive fins and skipped the typical "Globe" prop mounted to the rear of the front section , because he wanted a rotary head lure , that would not only be able to be worked on the surface , .... but also dive up to 1 1/2 feet below , ...alone by rod tip manipulation.Even though Mr. Fox and some friends ran a small and short-lived lure manufactury by that time , the "Whirligig" was never commercialized , as he stated in his book , ......but still providing two pages of building instructions for this great lure .I have only adapted these instructions accordingly to my own working processes , modern materials and my own preference in terms of durability of timber lures .About 10 years ago there had been attempts to commercialize the "Whirligig" for the German lure market , .....I wrote a few lure ,-and tackle building essays for a local angling magazine back then , the chief writer of that Magazine was very fond of my handmade "Whirligigs" , so he used his contacts to local tackle companies to convince one of them to have prototypes made in their Asian production plant , ....for that purpose I had submitted two or three wooden samples to send down there .A few months later the molded plastic "Whirligigs" came back from overseas for a first test , .....but which turned out to be a great dissapointment for us , as the Asian plastic prototypes lacked sufficient buoancy to be able to impart that distinctive "Whirligig" action to them refered to as "skim and swim" by Mr. Fox .Sadly that German tackle company did not want to invest in reworking the failed protypes again , .......so up to this day the "Whirligig" has never been never commercialized .Best greetings , Dieter
