Thanks so much for your thoughts your perspective is a breath of fresh air amongst the jazz channels on KZbin that completely disconnect the historical realities that Jazz artist faced expressing their art, and the just regurgitate the same information about pressings and best list without ever really understanding what the music is about.

Hey Dan, keep on doing your thing🤓. I liked the Puzzle piece analogy. I live in Scotland; small country, ancient history. But I’ve also travelled to many different countries; and it definitely does open your mind to new ideas and perspectives. 😎

I like this video. This comment echos many of the themes you discuss in the video. This comment is very long. I felt it was important to write my thoughts out at least as an informal exercise. As a college student, I agree with your perspective. I appreciate hearing these concepts explicitly stated. Even though I hold similar opinions, societal norms in conjunction with status-quo bias will have me second guessing myself. I find it difficult to live in today's world and yet be a product of it. From my (inherently) flawed perspective, it seems that both the faults of older generations and the faults of newer generations are at display constantly. Behavioral traps like loss aversion (not willing to change anything that could increase short-term losses), peak-end rule/glorified nostalgia, and reference dependence (does cardinality even matter if we are only slightly left from large right) which have set a terrible foundation for american politics are being reinforced by parental/societal figures to today's youth. This occurs alongside a rise in media illiteracy (no matter what political opinions someone has, they will probably say america is illiterate) and trying to take manufactured social networks with an overly formal lens (over-importance on self-presentation/self-identification). I find myself often struggling with this hyper-specialization as I often am unable to sincerely relate to others because my mind defaults to the thought process that boils down to the heuristic that "if they do not have the same puzzle pieces as me then they don't matter as much". I thought the propaganda point with china was interesting. It reminded me of a conversation that was had in my international economics course where the question was posed "why does China decide to consistently devalue the yuan when they have the opportunity"? Instead of an obvious connection to terms of trade/foreign demand, another student in the course responded that "I don't think every country has the best intentions for their citizens in their mind". Even american politicians (as blantantly biased as they are) must believe that their actions will lead to a better america. Why would you think that an economic powerhouse would decide to sabotage their own people just because they thought they deserved it? I cannot say for certain that her answer was entirely fueled by propaganda, but I am confident it played a major role. I believe this is an example of american stupidity. Empathy needs to be included within the personal economic (possibly financial) framework. The internet and fast transportation has exposed the need for global empathy rather than local empathy. But humans haven't evolved to this need yet. I believe that the political framework should be reworked to reflect this. Higher importance on global ambassadors within the decision making process (probably needs to be some voting form) to bring these global puzzle pieces before. I will conclude this rant by saying that everyone feels the pain of the world accurately but is unable to correctly diagnose it. As a note to music: Been listening to bobby hutcherson a lot recently. Stick up and San Francisco really drive it to me. I will definitely listen to Dave Pike soon since I've been digging vibes recently. The manipulation of jazz (really all music) by structure/composition can often feel like a corporate structure to me (I don't think I am saying anything profound here). Everything must be documented, even the unimportant non-meaningful crap. Even has been exposed within rap and I feel we are getting out of the hyper-corporate realm as there are successful artist owned record labels (GxFR, Backwoodz, 10k) are the ones fronting/creating music that is directly pushing the genre this decade.

Nice to hear the rant, Dan. I'm afraid (the terrible truth is) most people don't read books anymore. I know as I teach in higher education. Many students don't know/care where the campus library is. Instagram is seemingly, where it's at. Your analogy of 'the puzzle' has echoes of the Overton window.

Yea Fkn Instagram and mind numbing social media in general...its killing a generation of kids... reading is so valuable.. but the powers that be have frowned upon it, n would ban all knowledge if they could figure out how.... Growth and collecting puzzle pieces takes investment in self, and that concept in and of itself is a dying breed... I know many virtual people, where all they have done is on line.. esp the younger crowd.. I am not familiar with this Overton u speak of .... but will look into it!

Keep doing what you do, Dan! It’s much appreciated by those who “get it”. So many of the haters believe the earth is flat…so their opinion is meaningless. If you take away all music which contains politics…there would be very little music. Especially true for jazz.

Great episode, both from a socially conscious POV, and of course that of a jazz historian. Remember - Trolls only keep their power, if one let's them inside one's head. Otherwise they remain irrelevant bantha fodder.

You are incorrect. B Sanders is classified as a Social Democrat. Seeks 59% Income Tax Rates for the top tier. A Centrist in the USA, Iceland, Mongolia, etc etc. Not ''centre left''!!, their rates are around 75-85%. Ask a Pol Scientist to explain the compass/spectrum criteria to you.

@@TheJazzShepherd You stated he was ''centre left'' a fallacy. It's folks like you who misrepresent the science/criteria who prevent the actual Left - in the USA essentilly the Green Party - getting much support. It is a common 'tactic' in the Media to call th Democrats the ''Left'' even though they are a Centre Right party ! If you want the Left get more votes stop doing this!!

Slow down Dan. I really appreciate your knowledge of Jazz music and I appreciate many of your political views. But you keep going on and on about your opinions and everything. I think you have a good heart but you’ve become a bore. I know you have personal struggles lately but it seems to have spilled over to your program. But you’re preaching to the choir in my case because I live what you talk about. Your show was like a refuge to all the bull hear and I got angry because my cool place to hang out seems to have disappeared at times. It’s your show and do what makes you happy.
