625km EV drive in France with Ioniq 28kWh: how easy?

We are riding on the set of Ionity charging stations all the way back from Brittany to the UK. It's a 625km journey and we'll be making five stops. That's probably more stops than should be needed if there were more regular charging stations available along the way. The Ioniq EV 28kWh just delivers the expected performance both in terms of efficiency and charging. It's a very efficient car and the speed of DC charging is flat at 60kW from low to 80%. This makes for a very good journey, not all that much longer than what would have been achieved with a petrol/diesel car. We compare all the stats at the end of this video.

i drive electric since 2018 (Nissan Leaf) and bought my 2018 black Ioniq premium in 2020. I just LOVE this car. I bought it cheap with only 19k km on it and now after 2 years the value has increased. First car I own with negative depreciation. Last summer I did a Germany road-trip, from Amsterdam to Berlin, to Hamburg, to Bremen, back to Amsterdam as a holiday week. It was the first time we did a rodtrip with it, and we loved it. We love the car so much that my wife now turned in her petrol Mini for de Mini Electric, so we dont have a gas guzzler anymore. BTW I never use the build in nav, I see you also use carplay, I use waze and ABRP. I loved this video. And I love this car!

Congratulations on giving up petroleum products. The path to today has had hurdles, intentional and intense blocking by oil interests, misinformation. The view from 5 years ago as to brands with EV models, as to charging networks, as to services, to today is not only encouraging but shows the “discovery” of profits with the huge amounts of money being invested. Lovley to watch, good data as well. Thank you Form your effort. I did a round trip with same Ioniq from Frankfurt to Puebla de Sanabria. One direction 2000km. Corner of Spain and Portugal. One First day i made 1300km in 19h to Archachon. My data relates good to yours. Encountered One battery overheat at 50C as air temperatures had been above 32C. Even with this small battery you can go everywhere. On return trip was more than 5000km. Ioniq can do. :-)

Really interesting to see your experience, thanks for sharing. I'm planning a trip to the Tignes in late March and planning to take my Niro EV. I've researched the charging infrastructure and seems OK although we'll see how it goes! Might make a video myself.

Thanks. You should find the infra in France on the motorway, and outside the motorways is very good with plenty of choice for a car with the range of the Niro (assuming 64). May want to check out my other videos specifically on chargers in France but I think you ll be fine. Some are getting busier though so not all the same.

I don't own a EV yet, but the Ioniq 28 has been on the top of my list for a while now. I mostly drive around 100km per day, but I make about two 500km trips plus 500km back each year, so this trip was pretty similar to what I'd need. They sell for around 20.000€ in Finland now, so if everything goes according to plans I'll be able to get one in the summer of '23. The Renault Zoe is a little cheaper, but with less comfort and a slower charger. The Ioniq seems to have it's problems - like any car - but appears to be a great bang for the buck!

Sounds like a very solid plan! Apart from the fact it could use another 5 to 10kWh for those longer trips, I d argue it s hard to fault and quite unique in that sub20k segment

Great report, thanks. I have a 2018 Ioniq US spec PHEV. 4.2 miles per Kw is superb. The PHEV has a tiny battery, 30 miles of range but delivers over 60 mpg in hybrid mode. My second car is a 2022 Ioniq 5, 77 kw battery long range and averages 3.8 miles per Kw at 62 mph/100 Km per hour. Hyundai’s quality is impressive. Best wishes. ❤❤❤❤

Thanks. What a good combo of Ioniqs. 3.8miles per kWh on the 5 long range (suppose rwd?) is also very decent and better than I'd expect. A relatively large car for the narrow streets of European cities filled with cars parked on both sides of the road though.

I am thinking of going EV and an Ioniq would be my choice but I am torn between the 28 and 38kwh. I know that the 28Kwh charges much faster than the 38 but that has a better range. Most of my journeys will be local but occasionally I make a 200 mile trip so what would be your recomendation, the 28Kwh or the 38. Thank you for the excellent video, really interesting.

If 200 miles is the maximum you do occasionally, and with more recent equipment, I would suggest this points to the 38kWh. I might do a video on which reasonably priced used Ev i would get now but if I were to buy for UK use only, the 38kWh makes a lot of sense with the weaker (often 60kW) infra, slow motorway speeds (better efficiency), heavy traffic (better efficiency) and shorter distances. This means many situations where a single charge will be enough. Good luck with your choice

as a mtter of fact it doesent matter verry much if you charge of a 50 Kw charger or the 350 one it wont charge much faster anyway on that car. maximum 10 KW more on the 350 KW charger.

It s c65kW vs c45kW which is a 40% increase in duration on paper. Except of course in absolute it may be the difference between 20mn and 15mn charging duration, so not massive difference in real terms

Why don't you use ABRP to plan the stops? It does a more than decent job in predicting usage and range, and picking charging stops, in my experience.

For planning ahead, sure. I believe there are quirks though, eg using chargers still in planning or those on the other side of the motorway

I find that ABRP is unreliable and ignores the filters. I tend to decide where my stops will be and just use the VW in car nav or Google maps.

The amount of time this bloke is taking his eyes of the road is breath taking & dangerous. The road surface is near perfection with no potholes WONDERFUL..no potholes !!..But what a faff....having to stop every few miles..... Just how many coffees & cream cakes can anyone drink or eat, when waiting for another few miles to the NEXT plug in........His maths is not the most honest,,, looking at his summary figures tell me his stop time for charging was over 1hr 50mins add to that his travel time of 9 hours plus crossing time then you are looking at a 12 hour day + that is an unreasonable time . EV------not for me. Hydrogen is THE answer.

Three times as much for a 400 mile trip no way my Mercedes diesel does 900 miles on a full tank 100 pound fill up 400 miles cost 40 pounds and three hours less charging, get your facts right. Even as the diesel price has now reduced to 1.63gbp/l in the UK that would mean you achieve an amazing 3.8 l/100km or 74 mpg imperial. The other note is that I still had a diesel (BMW) 18 months ago and kept all logs of consumption, so I do know that I am comparing to the actual consumption for a car I have owned. Really don't understand your visceral reaction: you could argue about pretty much anything else (eg convenience, transition costs, environment, etc), but challenging the recorded times and consumptions really?

On "according to you charging always goes perfectly". Again for avoidance of doubt on the facts, how about 06:25 where I make it clear a connector is out of order and I therefore have to use a slower charger of 50kW. I also mention the fumbling with app vs card to start the charge at that same location.

You have to be a mathematical genius also a scientist plus the wait plus the car costing 35% more, plus the waiting plus the range plus worrying about how much range you have left, plus going slow, plus can't use the air conditioning, plus range drops 30% when towing, finding a charge point that's working. Too much hassle. One fill up in my diesel merc 5 minutes 700 mile range. No pressure no worries a better car. Sorry not for me.

I could understand that some aspects of EV ownership might still feel daunting. But you are not comparing like for like. Here I am pushing a 5yr old, first gen EV with a tiny battery from a solid but traditionally affordable brand on a long trip. For a start, the cost is not going to be 35% more vs a mercedes. Total cost of ownership is also much less. Yes I talk stats and enjoy the car maths, but it does not mean everyone driving an EV needs to engage with it... the point here is that if you can do these journeys with this car, then of course you can with the more recent but affordable EVs such as MG4/5 or the likes of Kona / Niro
