It seems like we get the most calls for swarms or to go eat with friends or whatever on the days when we hardly have a second to spare. This was one of those days. Sometimes the things that should be a priority take a back seat to the more fun things. I had to put work aside for a while to run out and catch this swarm but I'm glad I did. I paid off with a great swarm and two queens although one didn't survive. It's not often you get to catch two queens in one swarm of bees.
I put the box in my dad's truck and he relieved my so that I could get back to work. I can't remember if we set these bees up at his house or mine. Pretty bad when you're too busy to remember where you put your bees.
As I upload I'm singing the Blake Shelton song Honey Bee. He sounds better.

Another fine video! I wanted to wait until the hubby got occupied with the TV and my son went to bed so I could watch in peace on my time last night. I fell asleep before that happened. I got up early this morning to a nice quiet house to do it. You got me with the squirrel's nest, I was like Whoa! God Bless the Queen. May She Rest In Peace.

Those old, crusty frames of comb smell like home to the bees, but if I were a bee, I'd call them a 'nice fixer-upper opportunity'. XD Congrats on the new swarm and new blood for your bees~

At least 3 of the swarms I caught this year had 2 queens in them unbeknownst to me. After getting the hive on a stand and with the one queen caged, most of the bees take off leaving only a few bees with the caged queen. You gotta love bee keeping. One of your best videos, keep em coming.

OK I have to say I have been watching and studying how you use the bucket. Your technique. Its so smooth, fast and the best I've seen on youtube! You line up your target, sweep the ladies off their feet in one double pump at the cluster, pushing the bucket up to keep them from flying out and then dropping the bucket down (while keeping it vertical) and then dumping it in the box in one move. Before they know they are mad, they smell home and start to rethink the being mad part! Its impressive!

That grape vine is going to need some beefing up. Reminds me that we have a 30-year old setup like yours that needs some love. My mother insists that she can taste grapes in the fall honey. They'll work the grapes when they're bursting.

One of them already died. Gotta rethink location, soil... We have scuppernongs all over the yard but we've never tried grapes before. May just not be a good region for them.

Don't give up yet. We've got volunteer vines popping up all over the yard. East central Illinois is good for grapes and honeybees. Lately people have been buying old farms for the old house to turn them into bed and breakfasts. The successful ones are either vineyards or orchards or both. They're starting to want pollinators too. Not interested in pollinating or I'd be all over that. You might have picked up that I'm a beekeeper. IL4996 Have been doing it since 1978.

Just a thought, When I catch a swarm I usually throw a towel on the top to gently force the bees down. Then I lift a corner of the towel so they can fan. Another thing I do is put a queen excluder "under" the super for a day or two and feed. That way when they start eating they begin to call it home.
@628DirtRooster
@628DirtRooster 8 жыл бұрын
That does work great. I use a sweaty t-shirt a lot of the time since I always have one of those with me. lol Most of the time the boxes I take for swarm captures have the bottoms screwed on and I'm ALWAYS in a big hurry so I hate to take the time to separate them for an excluder. I just lock the whole colony up for 48 hours.
@628DirtRooster
@628DirtRooster 8 жыл бұрын
I stuck some vinyl window screen material in my truck to use instead of a lid or t-shirt so that the ones in the air could still easily catch the scent of the colony. I haven't tried it out yet though.
@MrGSF77

Now that's an idea, keep us posted. Right now about the only swarms I'm having is what some folks call population control swarms. In other words they are throwing off small swarms in order to get the population down lower. I don't have a clue if there's any lick of truth in it.

Speaking of swarming (maybe??). Was sitting in my home workspace when I heard a bee rattling around in a recessed light (attic above). Sucked him up with a vacuum. A bit later another one showed up. Turned out that any time the light was on, a new bee would show up 10 or so minutes later. This went on for a score of vacuum 8 - bees 0. Been a few days and no other bees have shown up. Inspected outside a couple of times without finding anything. Thoughts??? lol

Could have been scouts from a swarm that found their way into your home. Since you placed them in your motorized bee hive they weren't able to run back to tell everyone about the great place they found to live.

Randy, good catch for you but how did the swarm you turned down do? And I guess - The queen is dead long live the queen - how long would that poor dead queen act as a lure? Last question and I probably should research it myself but in a swarm condition what proportion of the bees go out as scouts - 10% or what? Does it vary for any reasons? Good show - production quality is going way up. Your labeling of things is highly useful. Thanks.
@628DirtRooster
@628DirtRooster 8 жыл бұрын
Billy Bob got his swarm but I haven't heard an update. That queen was dead more that twelve hours and was still working as a lure. Not sure on the percentage but I'd guess 5% or less judging by how many show up later after a swarm is removed.

@628DirtRooster

I've never found more than two at a time but at some point it's down to one so I assume the colony kills one of them. It probably happens more than I know because when I go in looking for the queen I stop looking when I find one since all I want to do is make sure there is a queen in there.

@628DirtRooster
@628DirtRooster 8 жыл бұрын
Sugar water just makes them sticky and helps keep them from flying. It's OK for swarm captures if you can reach the cluster. Otherwise it slows down the catch. I would use it on a "dry swarm" or to introduce package bees but that's about it.

Hey DirtRooster I caught a swarm in a trap I built today it is a 18 in. cardboard tube I made it has a tin roof and is painted. Should I let them get establishes and make some comb before I move them to a real hive box?

628 Dirt Rooster. I marked a queen just 2 days ago. Went back in the hive to check on her and she was no where to be found. The worker bee's has already building the Queen cells. Do you got any suggestions on why they would be queen less now?
@628DirtRooster
@628DirtRooster 8 жыл бұрын
Could be a hundred reasons. Maybe she got hurt while you were marking her. Maybe they didn't like the paint job and balled her. Who knows. Hopefully they'll raise you another good one.

hey I've been beekeeping for almost a year now, I started off with one and split it this April and everything was going fine. well we had some pretty bad weather in my area and all my hives got flooded, I haven't been able to open this up and see the damage but do you have any advice for me that would help me get them back up and running again? thanks for your help and videos!
@628DirtRooster
@628DirtRooster 8 жыл бұрын
If the hives survived just start feeding them sugar water. If they didn't then dry the frames and put any brood frames in a fire ant bed for them to clean them out. Then buy more bees.

hey it turns out that my bees have indeed survived, the only bad part is there covering my entire razor! and I have no idea were to put them I know that the clocks ticking intell they find themselves a new home! what should I do! I'm heading over there tomorrow should I put them back In there boxes even though there still wet? and I know there's going to be a lot of dead bees, larva, and eggs. but I have no other options? what should I do?!? oh and my smoker floated away. should I still mess with them without my smoker?
@628DirtRooster
@628DirtRooster 8 жыл бұрын
Not much choice on the smoker but I would get them situated back in the box whatever it takes. Take the frames out of the box and shake them of as much as possible without destroying them. Spritz the bees with sugar water to keep them from flying and shake or brush them back in the box. Lock it up for two days in the shade so you don't cook them. If you have any new or clean frames I would put those in in the place of any dead brood frames. In two days put them where you want them and open the box. You'll have to check back in a few days to see if the queen made it.

+628DirtRooster I have frames but there not drown out, will that still work? and will the honey still be OK for them to eat after the flood? and do you know were I can get another queen if she didn't make it?
@628DirtRooster
@628DirtRooster 8 жыл бұрын
Zaykeese Riley The new frames and the honey will be fine. I don't know any queen suppliers over there. Check with Wabash in Houston. They may know someone. Tom Brueggen may sell queens but I don't really know.

+628DirtRooster I had three different hives, and according to my dad they all gathered together on the razor BC that was the only dry stable place they could go. should I split them up evenly(into three hives) ? or just put them all in one hive?( 1hive=2deeps and 1 super)
@628DirtRooster
@628DirtRooster 8 жыл бұрын
Zaykeese Riley I'd put them all in one box until they have a little recovery time and the evaluate and decide. If there is a really huge cluster you may want to lock them in a double deep for the two days.
