Several times a year we get called out to remove honey bee colonies that someone has tried unsuccessfully to poison or to remove. This one happened to be one that a nationally, very well known, pest control company tried to poison. It was very apparent that the guys who showed up for this job had very little knowledge of honey bees and the end result of their attempt was a failed job, damage to the home that was left unrepaired and a foul odor that was causing the tenants discomfort.
We took this job on after a friend had been offered the job and referred us. I think he just had too many other things going on to take the time out of his schedule for this one. I'm positive he didn't know it had been poisoned as we had not been told about that either. We only found out about the poisoning when we showed up to locate the bees and make a game plan for getting them out.
No one was home during our initial inspection. It was weeks later when we came back for the removal that we met the tenant and got to hear the hilarious story of two "professional" pest control guys with no protection running around swatting bees and getting stung. I'm not sure what kind of condition they were in when they left but they didn't even pick up after themselves. I assume they were in a hurry to get to the pharmacy for some Benadryl.
No matter how good you think you are and how many times you've done a thing there is always room for error. You'll see in the video that when we were done the entire hive that we had exposed had been completely removed and we had successfully collected all the bees we could see. When we had completed the job and put the soffit and trim back together there were no bees coming and going and no more evidence of a live colony in this house. The whole job took about seven hours including cleanup time, setting the bees up on the yard and putting away tools. If you weren't aware, that much time on a ladder is painful.
In almost 500 hive removals I've never missed like I did with this one. A few weeks after we removed the hive the property manager called to say the tenants were seeing bees again. Because we vacuumed so many bees during the removal I didn't even search for the queen until that call. By the time I checked the hive, which was set up in my "iffy", yard they had a mated laying queen. I now know they made a new queen off the brood I put in with them but at the time I thought I had gotten the queen during the removal and that another swarm had just moved into the space enticed by the scent left from the hive. Because of the short amount of time from when we were there until we got that come-back call and because I wasn't 100% certain I didn't screw up I decided to go back out at no extra cost. That turned out to be what needed to happen anyway. At that time my schedule was very full and I was in and out of town a lot with work so I reached out to my friend Jimmy for help. I'm happy to say that Jimmy did a stellar job in picking up the slack for the ole Dirt Rooster. He brought home the remainder of the hive with the original queen and the rest of the brood. You'll want to watch the whole video for the rest of the story of the hive that wouldn't die.
Tools Jimmy and I used to locate the hive are as follows:
