/ @628dirtrooster At least the entire second half of this video is very instructional so if you don't like to hear a bunch of talking about hive removals then fast forward to somewhere around the twenty minute mark for some details of how long this took or to the end for some coastal scenery. I started setting up scaffold at approximately 2:45 PM the first day.
For this thumbnail I had to play off "The Kill" with the hive looking kind of like a rib cage. Just couldn't resist. This was recorded October 26, 2019.

So good to hear you talk about the added time to do a cut out when recording the removal to make a video. Another fact you added and I was glad o hear was the need for being a contortionist to do removals, we put out bodies in the most unusual positions very often just to remove the comb as you demonstrated. Another great video brother. By the way, the nozzle for your hose is not lost, it's jus somewhere inside of your truck...maybe under some of your dirty laundry. God's peace Randy.

We're still anxiously awaiting the teaser video you mentioned a LONG time ago. The one where you show us how to deal with the aftermath of sucking up too much honey, & how to deal with it. I've got a battery operated Milwaukee shop vac, a 3D printer, & files to make er print the goods to convert a Home Dumpster bucket to make it the collection chamber, & attach the hoses to it. Got my bee suite, & hood too. I know where there is a hive that a neighbor needs removed. I'm fearful of doing all the removal work, & winding up with no bees to show, because I sucked up too much honey with them. The neighbor isn't in any hurry to get the bees gone, so I'll wait til we see your video before I attempt to start beekeeping.

I can’t remember if you said you did, I’m completely amazed you don’t wear any protection whilst doing these cutouts last time I done a cutout I was stung good style through my bee suit and my nitrile gloves mind you it was a really big hive like yourself in a bad tight roof space. How has it been for you beekeepers in America over here in the UK it has been a awful season so far the weather has not helped us at all virgin queens not getting mated or badly mated queens going drone layers and now to top it off the yellow jackets wasps are eating my hives up like never before oh and with myself no honey crop to speak of. Thank you for taking us along with you Randy on another cool cutout mate.

I've been doing removals here in Texas for 10 years now - got my start after watching a dozen or so of JPtheBeeMan's videos. You & I do removals very, VERY much the same way (slow & steady). Although you're WAY more tolerant of stings than I am (I'm kind of wuss). LOL I loved this video. I notice at the end you used a putty knife to cut comb. I have one of the BIG hive tool's that I used my bench grinder to make the edges super-sharp. Having a sharp edge on the angled side makes it easier to cut comb in tight spaces like this one. One trick I learned from another guy here in Texas for bees that run is to take 1 piece of brood comb and frame it up (a small frame, like a medium cut in half lengthwise is easier to work with). Have a piece of wire on the frame and staple the wired brood comb back up into the space - but 2-3" off the sides (so you can see on both sides). Take your queen clip (an old one that has had queens in it before) and put that on the frame as well (it will still have a lot of scent on it). Take a break (ie. go get food at a restaurant) and most of the bees that ran will come back to that brood comb.

Bees have no value...a queen will cost $25 to $50 a nuc sets you back a 100 or so BUT when you have been keeping bees as long as Dirt has you make or graft your own queens... what is 14 hours of your time worth? Flir located (trip) several phone calls before and during the pricing/quoting, always figure 2 trips to get bees and then you have to lock them down 48 hrs, cleaning up your equipment, BUYING your equipment, replacing your equipment, replacing lost tools, down here in Mississippi it is HOT and HUMID most of the months when bees just moved in(that's almost never correct) they just got hot and are sitting on the front porch, and then there is the gamble that you find/catch/get home with the queen, most of the time once you vacuum up the bees their comb/brood/larvae overheats so when you release them they abscond.... if you don't charge for your service/time/experience/expenses/equipment/vehicle/travel time/ and on and on then you are the one paying for the homeowner to no longer have bees in their house....a properly built/sealed/maintained home shouldn't have an area accessible for a colony to move into.... yep it's costly when figured fairly... and no I won't tell you what to charge either, every situation is different... don't forget you almost always need to know how to build/rebuild/and dismantle in such a manor that no one can tell you have been there and so you know the bees will never get back in the exact same place.....warranty or not that makes you look bad

There is a perfect tool for cutting comb from wall cavities. You can find this tool on eBay and in used condition. It is called a "Cutco Spatula #28". These spatulas are stainless steel and very flexible. The flexibility is the big advantage as you can get it into the cavity in fairly tight places. They are sharp enough to cut comb away from the wood but not too sharp to cause you to cut the wood.

They seem to only be worried when they feel like they are getting low on stores...from about an hour before sunset through night time they are almost always calm or busy getting home and unloaded....plus the smoke makes them think a fire is near so they load up(gorge themselves) on honey, to fat and full to sting kinda....smoke also masks pheromones
@RICDirector
@RICDirector 2 жыл бұрын
There's a balance--if they sting, they die. So for the sake of the hive, they have to be picky about how much they sting/how aggressive they are, or they would be very short on workers to keep the hive alive and thriving. I believe (although I could well be wrong here) that Africanized hives tend to be more populous (larger) than the European honeybees, for that reason. They are SO aggressive that much more of the hive is lost with each attack....

I'm in Tucson Az, had killer bee hive (a huge one) under my bedroom when I moved into my place 2 yrs ago. I paid a beekeeper $150 for removal.....but the goin' rate will vary from beekeeper to beekeeper and location across the globe.

TS 30:55, your description of bidding the job, selling it, tool prep and organization, reminded me of back in the day, not that long ago when I was a contractor; same mind set and procedures. I am very new to beekeeping want to be a bee remover too, but I think I will remove swarms instead of bees hidden in walls and such. I am tried of that end of the trades. Stay safe, love your shows.

What I love about this channel is that, at need, I could probably manage to move a swarm safely; I could PROBABLY be a reasonable help to a beekeeper; and I know enough to know I don't know enough! :)

Talking about the nails after you pull your trim and paneling I use the buzz cutter to cut then flush. As far as cut out honey I'm sure Travis Atkins has told you that in Oklahoma we can't sell it so my homeowners get all they want.

Hello Randy in one of your last video’s I have looked at of your’s you had talked about your gloves .for some reason I have always had a bad problem with Bee’s stinging my hands 🤷‍♂️. I have tried quite a few different stiles of gloves an they always still get me on my hands . So by you telling about the Raven Nitrile gloves you use I had to get some an try them . WOW, WOW they are great . My last hive inspection I bet they bumped my hands 30 times bad weather BUT. Not even one bee landed on my hands . No stings no nothing so thank you thank you . I enjoy your video’s hope to meet you next January. Keep up the great work an video’s

That's why you need a yellow/orange/blue set of Baker scaffolds...run you 200 new under 100 used...30ish by 60ish top 6ft tall adjustable in 3 inch increments lot lighter to haul around and yes will support you.....but you might want to use a thicker piece of wood or add a piece...

Nice video. Really enjoyed the reality of how hard that it really is. I was wondering if maybe a hack saw blade would be good for that spot where your knife wouldn’t fit. They are kinda bendy. I thought I saw the queen right in the center of that very last bunch you vac’d the next day. Go check it out. Keep on truckin 👍👍🐝🐝

I bet too much smoke from a smoker would ruin a good batch of honey if you are using burlap or pine needles. Honey REALLY takes on smoke flavor well. Want to try something good? Put some wild flower honey in a shallow dish & put it in your smoker for 30-45 minutes with some nice pecan, apple or peach wood then use it to baste a Boston butt or pork chops. A couple of the folks with the AMMA have won the world mazer's cup making meads using smoked honey over the last 3-4 years. YUM!

@WillyPete_ 3 жыл бұрын
My first solo removal... i smoked the comb way too much and imparted smoke flavor into the honey.... i was heart broken. I thought if i had used Oak, Hickory or Pecan wood as smoker fuel that the smoked-honey would do well blended into a Bar-B-Q Sauce.... but i used Burlap and Cardboard. In my front yard I am currently open air feeding Cutout-Honey Comb and loose honey to the bee hives and nucs in my back yard, in attempts of recovering quite a bit of honey from a plenty of cut-out jobs that were dirty.
