Finally they actually explain what all the numbers are and mean they always say while building a motor. I'm not a car specialist have never even pulled motor out of a car myself so someone like me never understood any of it. Now I'm getting what they are talking about and it's actually quite simple.

People have made more comments about beating that lower pulley on. Most engine builders do whats called setting the crank and that is giving it a couple of raps on the end of the crank with a piece of wood and a bfh. I always go back to front in the direction my clutch fork pushes. Beating on the crank with the little rap taps he did will not hurt the thrust bearing nor does it change end play from where it was at to start with.

I would like to see or can you explain how you determine and or reply on how you go about determining the length on rocker studs on big block and small block Chevy when using after market heads . This is something that I have not 20:18 seen covered on your show or any video that I know of. Reason I ask is I’m building a mark IV 427 with pro comp. Heads and went from hydraulic flat tappet to hydraulic roller my push rod length changed of course but I ran into a problem of the stud length needed to change also this is from the rocker side length in order to get proper valve train geometry set up also only 1 stud on each cylinder needed a longer stud length because of the boss where the stud was resting in the head was lower on intake than it was on exhaust. I needed 5-3/4 turns on my rocker nut after paralleling the 1.7 rocker to the valve spring upper keeper using a line through the trunion through the center of rocker tip . I could do this on the same exhaust stud that was used on flat tappet cam but the intake stud was not long enough to get this pre set to measure for proper push rod length . Love watching your show and all the info you guys cover on engine building great show .

@deadboy600 420hp from 5 liters stock so more like 84hp/l. This BBC would need to make about 870hp while meeting emissions standards to do what my 5.0 does stock with its displacement. Given those huge heads I don't see 870hp being that hard to achieve here but doing it while being EPA compliant for a car or light truck is another story.

Mate, really enjoy your show! After 30 years building motors it always surprises me how much lube you use whilst assembling the engine. Is this an American thing or personal enjoyment?

Isn't it true that the piston to wall tolerance is generalized for all regions and temperatures? And that if a car was confined to mild desert or west coast temps that the clearances could be less? Allowing for a tighter ring pack/piston design, of say 1mm, 1mm, 3mm. For a turbo engine with a maxed stroker/rod ratio, and a fully supported oil ring land...With aux. h2o & oil heaters/gauges for good measure. Shouldn't the building tech improve with the times? I'm talking about a custom built engine, for that region.

Not to be judgemental, but it seems a waste to throw that kind of a mill into a Jeep.....feeding pearls to pigs. Too much compression for the normal man/woman......I dropped about the same piston into a hot 460+ Ford I built.....mine were forged TRW pop-ups and I cut a flame trench thru the dome.. I had to go to water/alcohol injection to quell the detonation. A pain in the ass but that engine made very good power.....if I remember that compression was 10:4/1 and the ported iron heads (SCJ) I used didn't help. I couldn't afford good aluminum heads at the time and was using a short cam duration advanced 4 degrees with high lift to pull camper(big RV cam)....fast, but limited advance in distributor. With the long duration/high lift /zero cam advance + Aluminum heads this engine should not have the problems.

What's the lifespan of an engine like this? I don't see it living too long.

High piston speed engines generally dont last long, but considering they'll probably take it out once or twice, then itll probably get started up once in a while, itll be fine lol

that's a short rod to stroke ratio 1.41 , a lot of side load . a little less stroke n a longer rod better at 1.65 . makes more power with less wall drag

Im running 11:1 and i can run 87 if i pull so much timing out that its basically dieseling. I bet with a big enough cam at 15 to 1 you could run 98 cruising around town and switch to race gas at the track. I don't know though I'm a diesel mechanic 24:1 all day baby. I only Built the motor in my truck because it was a lot cheaper and I didn't want anyone else to do it.

Ok what am i missing? Why have such a big lobe on the cam and then have such a wide Lobe centre angle. 113Deg. is low emission area. Here in the UK our engine are very small by comparison in swept volume as well as power output😂 Our performance cams use much less lift but generally upto 330 deg for race 300 ish Deg for Rally/ Tight twisty courses and upto 270 Deg for moded road stuff. Race cams can be down to 98 Deg LCA, 104 is more normal Rally profiles are 106 -108 deg and road specs 110-112 So as you can see 113 would be really wide for what we would understand

I agree on the LSA, but as far as duration, are you talking about advertised or at 0.050" tappet lift? That is a huge difference in duration.. most cams advertised at 330° are around 230° @ 0.050".. they do that as a standard to measure a cams duration between manufacturers, because the manufacturer can advertise whatever they want, but the numbers at 0.050" lift lie a helluva lot less Probably the reason for the wider LSA is less overlap than if it was on a tighter LSA, which produces more cylinder pressure.. which at their 15:1 compression ratio, I think it's a moot point, but with the extreme duration of the cam they used, a lot would be going out the exhaust.. so I understand it.. personally I would have retarded the cam a little bit, but these guys aren't always the best at choosing parts.. if it doesn't make 1100hp, these guys are losers

European makers usually give lift at 1mm (40thou) one of the better cams for a 1ltr engine I get to play with is advertised as 304Deg. It's got 240deg at 40 thou. 150thou @ tdc and 380 thou lift. On a fully prepped engine we see 122bhp from a little 1ltr sohc 2 valve per cyl. Shame it's not 3ltr 😂
