Today was cold and clear! Great day to be in the woods. I Used the Wallenstein Skidding Winch, Stihl MS 261, and The RK 55 Compact Tractor to cut down and pull a Big Broken Red Elm from down in the Valley.

I love watching you work. You give life to my disabled and broken body. We are about the same age, and fear was not in my thoughts. I fell 6 years ago from a standing position it was over for me. Seeing your deer stand reminded me of my climbing stand, I would go 30 feet up and from stupidity never used a safety harness. I now would love to Just walk with out a walker. Haters that I see give the thumbs down are miserable and the joy of living is not in them. Love your family and am just a long distant friend. Not as cold in Arkansas, but cool and rain. Say high to Hunter and the family. God bless.

Great winch! Liked your reminder about safety. Must be tricky on those trails with snow. I broke my leg walking down a hill to my tractor , lay in the snow 50 yds from my house for 20 minutes until someone saw me. Learned never to go out in the yard or woods without my cellphone.

The older you get the wiser you get . Looking back at some of the things I did when I was younger I'm thinking my goodness was I that stupid . LOL . Oh it's a red elm by the way . Amazing how you guys know what kind of trees they are . To me they all look the same . Red oak , white oak , cherry , maple .... it's a tree . I would have to carry a book around with me in the bush to identify what kinds of trees they are . Even the spruce trees . A cherry tree to me is something that I grow in my yard for sweet cherries to eat . LOL . Yes it certainly was a beautiful day yesterday . Took a run States side to pick-up a few packages that I ordered and fill up my tank with cheap diesel fuel . Saved quite a bit of money considering diesel is $1.20 a liter over here . Tank was getting low and I wanted to fill up with winter diesel . Today ... snowing and rain at times . Good day to do some laundry and some house cleaning . Fun times . LOL

Mike - From the retired Lutheran Pastor in Davenport , IA, again. Learned more again today - Thanks for sharing. I appreciated the thought from one guy who said, "You don't get old being stupid." Great thought. I did some things as a young man that also makes me amazed some days I've lived as long as I have. At that age there is a thought that perhaps we suffer from testosterone poisoning. As you say, "Have a day."

Mike and family, love your channel and what you do. Thank you for recommending Buckins' chanel. Just wonderful. I noticed on one of your videos when you used your moisture meter. It looked like you took off the rubber tips on the probes. From my understanding when you do that it takes in readings from the environment instead from the wood directly. I'm from rural MN and I also have a son with autism. Love to Stanley and peace for your family. God bless always.

I'm glad you went back to talk about your old, hand-made deer stand. I noticed it in the background at about 12:36 and couldn't help but compare it to your new mini-cabin. That comparision is actually a good analogy with how far you have come in the development of your property. I think that many of us that are blessed enough to survive our youth look back and shake our heads a little.

Good morning Morgans. Beautiful day indeed. Couple things that may help those tough ones that have snags in the way; - Try choking the logs much closer to the ends, roughly a foot in. - Cut a "V" on the end to eliminate those square corners that catch on everything. That's just my recipe to get over the granite knobs sticking out of the ground everywhere and I have no where near the winching power you now have. Love your setup and love the amount of time you get to spend in the woods!

Hey Mike, and family, I have a Igland 4001 winch and a snatch block, though not self releasing, and have used it a ton to pull all kinds and sizes of trees with my DK-40 Kioti tractor. I like your RK tractors, and Wallenstein winch- they make good equipment too. I have a Igland Log Grapple, a model GR-20 which is excellent for logging. Their is a similar grapple made called a 'Frostbite' which is virtually identical, but it sports brass bushings where the key pivot points are, unlike my Igland grapple. You're new to a winch so I want to steer you to some additional safety considerations. First, I don't know what RPMs you're running your RK at when winching but I would consider lowering the RPM's to closer to idle, unless you find it bogging and then raise it according to the load. Second, stand on the left rear when using the rope to pull the load to the backboard. If you note the clockwise PTO rotation, you don't ever want to be standing where the PTO shaft could head toward you if some part of it breaks! Not likely to happen, but you don't ever want to be where it could take you out! Here is a video from a guy who has been doing this for 25+ years. It shows tips and tricks to incorporate into your routine. E.R. Long :'Tractor logging' 16:03, on KZbin. It, among others gives one some tips to use withOUT having to reinvent the 'wheel' Anyway, stay safe, and keep the vids coming.

The skidder is pretty awsum. Do they recomend greasing the cable on it? I just wondered what they recommend for maintenance on it. Besides the general lubrication. I would think you would be able to pull more with the wench also. I like that it is made to work well with very little impact on the land and trees. The only real issues is keeping things anchored up top to handle the load. The nice thing is with one pull you can get the tops and logs. Also alot safer than skidding with chains and tractor on a hill. We also seem to get safer as we get older. I didn t always like working by myself in the woods. Things can go wrong too quickly. Keep up the great work. Thank for sharing all that you do.

We have a little red elm here and a lot of american elm that only grows so big and dies. Southeast Minnesota has similar trees as you. I sawed up some american elm with my alaskan mill and it was beautiful wood. It does like to 'move' a lot and is not real stable. I had a lot of cracks and weird twists despite stickering up with weight on top - under a roof, but in open for 2 1/2 years. I cut mine 2" thick and planed down to 1 1/2" flat boards.

Mike ,You need a nose cone to put over the end of the log In small winch applications they work great and let log ride up and over obstacles and keeps it from plowing. I’m sorry for your loss. It’s tough to lose a K9 buddy.

Elm is miserable. stringy and fibrous. The roots are like steel cables. we tried to push them over to clear them from a fence row and had to practically dig them out to make the roots finally let go enough to get the thing pushed over. I wonder if it will be like shag bark hickory when you saw for lumber. can't take too much off one side while cutting or it will curl on you. Thanks for sharing. love the skidder.

I think back on my younger days and think to myself. In my late teens and into my early thirties I used to bounce and not break. From my mid 30s to late 40s I would just thud and hurt for a day or two. Now well into my mid 50s I try to avoid going thud because there will be breakage involved. Safety now is at the forefront of activity’s.

Those tractor winches are an incredible value and extremely versatile. We’ve had a Fransgard V4000 for years and still use it for selective harvesting high value timber when a small footprint is desired in the forest. Elm can make some lovely looking saw wood! it's also one hell of a b**** to split by hand for firewood as it's so dense/knotty. Probably why it hung on by such a small amount of hinge wood when you were felling it. Well that plus no canopy of course! I'd like to see this milled!

Mike, I would do everything I could do to protect the wire rope of the winch. I would not use it to wrap around the log and pull with it, I would use a choker chain or sacrificial cable before I would use the cable from the winch. That winch cable cost a ton of money to replace.

Try hooking the choker closer to the end of the log and it won't snag as much. Have the winch line run from the top pulley when pulling to the rear. The winch will sink in and grab the ground better, and there is no way you will flip the tractor over backward before the winch stalls out. The lower pulley is for side and difficult pulls. Remember, you want to lift the front of the log.

I'm curious why you weren't using the choke chain and why you were attaching so far back on the log. Most videos about this kind of logging show the folks hooking up much closer to the end of the log. I also agree with commenter "portedadrien" in that a "skidding cone" would be of great help in getting you log up the hill without it getting caught on things or digging in. Do a Google search for it, the thing gets great ratings.

Do you have many red elms in Pennsylvania? Here in S.E. Iowa red and white elms used to be prolific. Unfortunately, in the 60's and 70's they were ravaged by dutch elm disease. Most all of them were lost. Red elm makes beautiful lumber. We used to call it poor man's walnut. I have a carpenter buddy who build all of his kitchen cabinets out of red elm. They were gorgeous.

Winching with a tractor is an art. Your doing real good. Only thing that I would have done differently is I would have took the cable out of the bottom shive. Pulling from the top pulley gives more lift on the log and I find it puts more weight on the skidding shoe on the ground. Winches are game changers for sure. 👍👍 the trees are ah trembling when Mike rolls in the woods now

Good video. It would be interested in what lumber a section of that log would produce. Cannot recall hearing of any elm lumber. I once cut up a huge Japanese elm at my mom's. It was very large with limbs bigger than the tree you cut. It was so big I had it cut down professionaly as it stood about 15 feet from the house. The wood burned well though.

Baffled how you have 4 thumbs down? Do they ever leave a comment as to why? Or are we all to assume they are jealous? Just thinking out loud. Great Video!

Cause your brain doesn't work that way, neither does mine but after a couple years I at least can somewhat understand it. Some people just hate us lol. Not because we ever did a thing to them and for no good reason they just do. Occasionally they will give a weak reason as an excuse but generally speaking its jealousy although they hate to admit it. That would be a rough way to go through life.

@@OutdoorsWithTheMorgans That's how I looked at it. They won't do what you do, but hate you for doing what you do. Can't imagine living a bitter life like that. To each their own. Hello from Illinois.

@@jamesdeffenbaugh5166 I'm with you there brother but it happens way too often for that to always be the case. Personally I think that people like the Morgans should be looked up to not because of their KZbin videos but because they have such great attitudes and look for the silver lining in even the worst situations

There are a few channels I watch that are similar to Outdoors With The Morgans in which nothing controversial or vulgar is stated or shown yet there will be several thumbs down given. When I read the comments, very rarely does anyone state why they gave a thumbs down. I agree that jealousy, anger and hate seem to be at play and, like the Morgans said, it is a rough way to go through life. Thank you for all the videos y'all have made. They make my day.

So, the winch is proving to be a great addition to your woods arsenal. That tree would have proven to be totally inaccessible without it. Great choice and will pay for itself in no time. Love the grain it shows on its but end. Think it might yield some nice boards[hint hint]! Be safe out there and break out the "Old Geometry Books."

Sometimes when the butt drops like that one did under other wood and tops u can run your cable under the debris and hook it up and it will drag under it

Hey Mike, you’re doing a great job learning how the Wallenstein logging winch will work for you. Your RK tractor is a brute too. You’ll be able to put a lot of the downed wood to good use and help the animal habitat be better also. Glad to see you’ve reached the age of safety first 😇😁. Tell all hello 👋.
