Today I used the Wallenstein FX 85 Skidding Winch For The First Time! Pulled a 3,000lb Red Oak Log with ease from down in a valley. This is a fantastic attachment for your woodlot, firewood, sawmill operation. I am now able to retrieve logs that I was unable to access in the past.

Choker chain tips: Always leave the hook mouth pointing away from direction you are pulling, opposite of how you hooked it. You don't need to thread that tail into the hook, it will slide over the links anywhere. You can hook the choker so when you start the pull it rolls the tree in the direction you need it to move by sliding it around under one side or the other.

Richard: I had the same curiosity about it's workings. I would love it if Mike would be able to take of a cover and show us a few pictures. However, taking off covers may not be that easy or Mike may not be willing to open up a new piece of equipment. So I went to the manufactures web page and found the following users/maintenance manual and it had some nice drawings at the end that give a good representation of the internal workings. www.wallensteinequipment.com/us/en/pdfviewer.aspx?pdf=2f52ba23-6319-4066-af73-31f60e0dc013

Just a little tip for ya when your hooking up your choker chain on a log, always put the open end of the hook facing away from the tractor/winch then it has less a chance of coming undone while in motion. My boss taught me that while logging last winter. Not trying to criticize just thought I’d share that with you. Another excellent video guys!

Scott Jennings I didn’t make this comment looking for a response from mike. Wasn’t trying to be critical just thought I’d offer a piece of advice. I’ve met and spoke to Mike and Melissa before and there straight shooters and down to earth.. yes he knows a lot about many different things but he doesn’t brag or say this is how YOU have to do it it’s always this is how I (Mike) do it. I’d say I’d have to disagree with your view of his channel sir.

Well you choke it depending on which way you want to turn the log obviously you don't want it to go example on bottom to climb over stumps and rocks

Nice winch I have done that with my winch on my Jeep. I was taught to hook both loops of the tree saver strap to the snatch block. So you don't choke the live tree and damage it.
@JohnSmith-tv5ep
@JohnSmith-tv5ep 4 жыл бұрын
James Kimball, I get what you're saying, you could strip the bark, that makes sense. In some instances though, by not 'choking ' the snatch block at the anchor point, it can 'slip' down the anchor point,before tension is on the winch cable causing the snatch block and winch line to ride at ground level. It has happened to me. What I have done is to try my best to choke the snatch block at the center apex of the winch cable load line and pull line, causing less chance of the strap wringing or choking tighter. Didn't mean to be lengthy in my explanation but hope it was understandable, Not trying to be smart or sarcastic either. Just commented on what works best for me. In situations where I have used a snatch block, every pull had a different way of rigging. Thanks.

Mike, a while back, "Wranglerstar" was skidding some logs, he placed an old car hood under the front of the log, and then started skidding the hood prevented the log from digging in an it skid without any problems. That skidding winch seems to work good, but with the soft forest soil the hood would prevent any digging in.

I have been waiting for you to get a winch since i joined this channel. Glad to see you getting a chance to finally use it, its such a game changer. Arm chair quarter back time, don't stand on the down slope of the winch, or the inside of the v of the cable, if something goes wrong you are between the tractor and the log instead of being on the outside of it. Not criticizing, just a observation, i know a person dose not know it all the first time. Cant wait for more videos with the winch and seeing it on forest!!!

That's awesome! Made me think back in the day when I had the old Toyota land Crusier that I had a winch on front and back. My dad and I used to get firewood and I took that beast and lug those logs from out of reach places then cut and put in back of Dad's truck but that rig was ever so slow. This looks a lot faster and man how easy it is to bring 'em in. Nice set up Mike. I think you're going to like that outfit. Very nice. Oh as for that rig I had, it's long gone. I miss those days and it was pure fun to be outdoors getting wood with my Dad. We used to burn wood all the time back then. I loved the smell and the heat and enjoyment of getting those logs out where we couldn't even get to them. My Dad is 82 now and still living, Praise God. We even talk about those days. I still enjoy the outdoors but it was better then when he was able to be there with me. Enjoy life to the fullest. God Bless Michael From NW NC

nice and fast! I don't have a skidding winch but I do have a 900 lb winch that mounts on my rear quick hitch. I ran massive 12V power cable back from the battery and added connectors to the tractor and winch. With the 3 point hitch I can lift the front of the log when it gets close enough to the tractor. Cheap and easy solution. What I would like though is a pair of wheels I can attach to the rear of logs to they can roll over surfaces .

I have an old Farmi winch that is hooked up to my JD 3020. Let me tell you that the Skidding winch is a back and time saver. Also on my Farmi I can disconnect the cable from the lower wheel to bring the log right up to the blade when it's down then hook the chain to the winch. When I raise the winch, it also raises the head log to keep it clean when towing. Great video

What a great system! And here I am still organizing the neighbor's horses to skid logs. I'll post some vids on Instagram once we get some snow (A tractor would chew up the landscaping too much) And that Piper with the heart of a logger! Chewing down her own logs and a casual disregard around heavy equipment and OSHA.

Good to see you finally got a winch. Try not to use the lower pulley on the winch. If you pull directly to the top you lift the logs. The lower pulley is for when there is stability issues like pulling to the side. Try to angle the tractor on the trail instead, pointing the rear towards the logs. The less you have to rig snatch blocks, the better. That winch would probably pull both logs, attach the choker chains to the gliders and the logs will come together. Then just hook the chains to the blade and lift the front of the logs up and skid them home.

I checked out the Instagram pictures of Hunter and Ty - just wonderful. Nice of the dogs to help out with the brush clearing. Don't know what the plan is for the big saw log but my neighbor pulls whole logs out of the woods tight up against the winch all the way up to the processing area. Might want to consider pulling saw and firewood logs together back to the house rather than cutting up on the trail. Of course that assumes dragging them won't make a mess of the trails.

Love the skidder winch. I was going to comment in the beginning and then, being the fast learner that you are, you put the snatch block across the road from where you were pulling. Two thumbs up. So reminded me of where I cut. One road through the center of the property, everything on the north side of the road is up the mountain, everything south is down. The road is one of the few level spots on the land. I'd really struggle without the block!

Melissa, I loved how your happy goldies arrived just ahead of you yet when they got to Mikes's log they both looked back to see what was keeping you? My Labrador has always liked to "prune" sticks like Piper, so her nickname became Tweezer. Those two fur buddies were joyful on your beautiful crisp day in the woods. What fun and so exciting to see how easily the new skidder wench hauled up those two logs.

Mike I've done my sure of rigging in the pass when ever you are pulling staff like you r. You should always make sure u put a coat or some thing over the cable. so if it would break it will slow the recoil of the cable down and help prevent a accident or the cable blowing out you back window of your truck or tractor.

Like the new toy but just a safety concern. Make sure you are at least the length of the cable that is spooled out away from the log and or winch. If that cable breaks it makes for a lethal whip so if you have the remote make sure to use it.
