I never knew a UL rated ACE lock existed. I worked in the Casino industry and they used tons of ACE locks and Medeco cylinders for cash handling machines then to Abloy. I seen that they now will use Van Locks on a lot of equipment that used to have the ACE locks. You should attempt to pick a Van Lock. I have a few samples around from when they first came out.

The van locks aren’t bad for tubular locks. I have several. I’ll try to dig one out soon. 👍

Nice manicure LPL. The first one of this type of lock I ever saw was when I was a kid and my dads Snap On tool box had one. Then at the age of 16 I went to work with him in his gas station (dad was a mechanic) and we had a nut machine in the office with the same type of key. The Snap on salesman had told me they used those locks because they were so hard to defeat, but then I showed him that the key for the nut machine opened the tool box. Not great security if they're all keyed alike. I found the same thing with laundry machines, all KAd.

LPL: waves a chewed up toothpick in a locks general direction. Lock: oh sir, come on in we've been expecting you. Click. LPL: that was harder than i though. Me: gtfo, really get out. Man i bet you pick up a paper clip and there a huge click and grind whir through out your neighborhood as all the doors unlock and garage doors open. The cops wont even arrest you, they are just like even if we get him to the station hed just let everyone out. It would be like arresting david Copperfield. The cop is driving the car and all of a sudden hes looking at himself in the rearview mirror from the back seat and the guy driving pulls off a mask of his face and its david.

I own that same exact vice. They are handy. Swivels and is positionable in any direction. You need to have a flat surface to be able to seal it down. It has a rubber pad that pulls up on the base when you crank the lever over which vacuum seals it to the table. It also comes with rubber pads that protect the piece from the jaws of the clamp. They slide on or off. Idk why I just said all that. I'm not a vise salesman but its a handy thing. Throw it down wherever its flat.

I felt the pin slip past the shear line. I then eased tension until it popped back.

The alarm manufacturer AW Fru used these extra bitted keys, circa 1970’s. Often a cam or switchlock. It addressed the tubular lock picks that were in circulation. It was commonly deployed commercially in Grade A alarms for insurance discounts or required compliance’s.

I'd presume he has locks commensurate with the quality of the house construction and his other security. He seems exceptionally intelligent and practical. No use putting an 'unpickable' / highest physical security lock on a door if it's in an ordinary frame or there's a window next to it that can easily be broken for entry - it'd be a waste of money.

I'm confused by what you said at the end. Did you fully pick this lock, or only the first stage with other stages remaining in order to fully rotate the cylinder?
@AalbertTorsius6 жыл бұрын
If you rotate a tubular lock, every key pin will be engaged by the next driver pin. Key pin 1 is now engaged by driver 2, key pin 2 by driver 3, and so on, except for the final key pin since that one is now likely in a driverless position (the nub) and the first driver pin, since that one has no key pin over it (again, that's the nub of the key would be). You now need to pick all pins again to rotate it one step further. And again, and again, depending on how far it needs to rotate (usually 90° or 180°). They're usually not hard to pick; it's just a lot of work.

What would you recommend for a dead bolt on an american home door?
@lockpickinglawyer6 жыл бұрын
I recommend spending your security dollars reinforcing your wooden door frames, installing security film on windows, etc... secure the far more likely attack vectors before looking to the deadbolt. After that, check with your local locksmith and see what they carry... a locks no good if you can’t have keys made, locks rekeyed, service, etc.
