One of my photography-related New Year's resolutions for 2023 was to explore and utilize more aspect ratios beyond the traditional 3:2 utilized by most digital cameras. I've never shied away from cropping a final image to make the composition exactly how I'd envisioned it, but rarely have I pre-visualized a scene with a particular aspect ratio in mind.
This year, I really want to focus more on the 65:24 aspect ratio, which is very similar to a 3x1 panorama crop or the Hasselblad Xpan crop (two horizontal 35mm 3:2 frames). This is also a crop that is pre-loaded into the Fuji medium format cameras (and man... those GFX 50s ii and GFX 100s models are tempting!), which a few other photographers I follow have utilized extensively.
In this wintry sunrise landscape photography video, I focus primarily on utilizing the 65:24 aspect ratio and secondarily on the 16:9 aspect ratio when I needed a little more room in the composition. It was a fun outing focusing on something different from what I had been used to photographing the past year or two.
I hope you enjoy the video and photos of these majestic Rocky Mountains, wintry woodland scenes in a restoration area of the forest, and a surprise small scene panorama of some ice that formed in a very unique location.
Happy trails,
Brian

Really liked all the photos but the ice in the footprint stood out to me the most. I'm learning to be aware of all my surroundings including below me. Good video Brian. This is Dave by the way.

Hey Dave, thanks for sharing your thoughts! Even just a year ago I probably would’ve walked right past this. I’ve learned to take a breath and be a bit more observant, and thankfully it paid off on this morning. Glad you liked it!

Glorious weather Brian and beautifully captured panoramic images at the start - great details in the explanation of the woodland images with the story to be told betwixt old and new as well as gaining the optimal tree trunk separation. All good stuff in calming the chaos out there in the forest. Had to laugh at the intro for the fractal ice abstract too 😂 Very true indeed! Loved that image 🥶 Just catching up on your films while I’ve been off line and really enjoyed this one 👍🏻

Really beautiful shots Brian. The panos came out great 😁 interesting to hear your thought process in taking the shot. Loved the simplicity of the composition in 6:11 and the ice photo. Stunning work!

That is a scenic landscape - I can imagine if you had some light onto those trees that would have made quite a difference, the sky looked very overcast. Good find with the ice texture shot.

Thanks Russ! The trees had a very slight orange glow on them, which was nice. But it would’ve been better to have some good color in the sky. Next time! Glad you liked this one 👍

Impressive presentation! Do you always manually bracket high dynamic range situations? Ever use bracketing in camera? Thanks for sharing!
@brianbeattyphotography
@brianbeattyphotography 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! If I know ahead of shooting that it'll be a high dynamic range scene like a sunset at the beach or over the mountains, then I'll set up the in-camera option. But it was pretty easy to just manually adjust for the exposures I was looking to get right: the snow in the foreground and the detail in the trees. The instant feedback alerts really help me to know if I need different exposures or not. Also, it's more important on the 5DSR than when I shoot on the R5 since it has lower overall DR. Glad you liked it!

Brian , how did y make 65:24? In camera or in some software
@brianbeattyphotography
@brianbeattyphotography 10 ай бұрын
I really wish that Canon had the 65:24 ratio as an option in camera! I did this one in Lightroom and have it as a saved preset aspect ratio.
