I love this format and your use of it is very compelling! This format is one of the reasons I used to justify buying the GFX 50S and then the 100S and then the 100II. I seriously considered 617 dedicated view cameras. And 612 rigid body cameras. But the GFX does all almost as well with many more options. Very impressed with your use of the 110. I had not thought of it being used the way you do. And yes. 25:64 for the XT5 would make sense. Great work!!

I have the GFX 50S II and one of the reason I purchased it was to have a digital xpan. It is definitely a process learning to shoot effectively in that ratio. Hopefully, it will become second nature, sooner than later.

I've been using a GFX50Sii with the GF20-35 for X-Pan mountainscapes when the foreground is too weak or messy. Not budget(!), but sooo cinematic 👍

In the past I've used my Canon R5 and stitching to produce pano shots with high enough resolution. My clients, architects and commercial designers, seem to really like them. I started shooting them when requests for 'banner' shots on websites became common. Now that I have a GFX I will have to try with it. Your truly well thought and clear explanations of how the pano's controls the viewers eye is rare.

I remember back in 1979, I used to work as a freelance for a newspaper when I studied. I was on a contract to photograph an alpine event in the mountains, when I suddenly discovered something on the horizon. Actually the only place to see it. Took some snapshots of that with my 70-150 telezoom. Back to the newspaper I developed the film and said to my supervisor, I think I have a big story here. The next day the headliner in the newspaper was my picture as a panoramic picture. My first panoramic picture, and it told the story. Yes, a panoramic picture can tell a story better than other formats, if everything is right, as you showd.

I love the x pan aspect ratio - have been using a Panasonic S5 which has the crop built in, as well as a Mamiya 7 with a 35mm adaptor to shoot these.

I usually visualize images with 1:1 or 2:3 or 3:4 or 4:5 or 6:7 aspect ratios. I rarely visualize panoramic images. However, when I do, I visualize 1:2, 1:2.5, 1:3, 1:4, or 1:5 aspect ratios. The 24:65 aspect ratio of the XPan, TX-1, and GFX falls between the 1:2.5 and the 1:3 ratios. I have never used the in-camera crop of the XPan, TX-1, or GFX, but I do use my Mamiya RB67 to obtain a 24:68 in-camera crop on 35mm film. The excellent images in your video have inspired me to use it more.

My clients usually want 2x3 or 4x5 images, so I rarely shoot panoramic anymore. But I think I'll give it a go again for some personal landscapes. Especially like your compositions with the 110. Kudos for handholding (I assume) that thing at 1/90 and getting a sharp image 👍

Handheld, indeed. As long as you're stable, you'll get sharp images most of the time at 1/90, I've found. Definitely get yourself back into the panorama world. It's a great option for capturing some unique images.

Not all of us can afford the GFX Series and since it's a software issue, NOT a hardware issue, I agree that Fujifilm would do all X-Series photographers a service including the 65x24 ratio for its cameras.

I cannot afford a GFX camera, so I recently purchased a SIRUI anamorphic 35mm lens for my X-T5 and although it's hard to compose an image without a monitor on top of the camera to desqueeze the image, it's as close to having a Pano camera without buying a GFX. Love the images and I have always loved the aspect ratio of Pan images.

Very strong work, Dylan. I have been experimenting with what I've been calling the 6x17 crop, based on the Fuji GX 617 film camera, for about the past year. It seems to be analogous to, if not the same as, the 65x24 crop available in my GFX 50S II. I've added the ratio to the crop tool in Capture One and use it often. However, I haven't been using it in camera to compose. I will now after watching your video. I also found it extremely helpful to hear you put into very clear language how it can make images more visually compelling. I knew it worked well on some images, but I was struggling to understand why, Now I know. Thank you.

Absolutely superb! This was a real masterclass in composing for that format. Not easy to find such specific insights (as far as I can see). I've been tasked by my mentor to produce a portfolio of 10 images shot in this format, and the video was a real help as I've been struggling a bit. Heading to England's Peak District later this week for some landscape shooting, and will definitely try out some of the ideas. It was interesting to see how well the format works with a range of different focal lengths if you get the composition right. By the way, thank you for including camera settings in your examples, especially actual focal length used when shooting with a zoom. I find visualising angle of view quite difficult, and looking at a series of images with the focal length stated helps me to "make the connection". Found your channel from a link in one of your Fujilove Magazine articles. Subscribed. (Edit to add; great idea about the triptych of vertical panos.)

Another beautifully crafted lesson Dylan, thank you. I like and have used the 16x9 ratio on my 50R, but really do enjoy the visual presentation of the 65x24 ratio. I feel inspired to go back and revisit some of my Raw images to see how they will transform in this ratio. The only problem I can foresee is that in my camera club comps, images must fit within the 1920x1080 pixel dimensions to be projected onto screen for judging, and this can reduce the impact of the vertical component of the image when the width is reduced to 1920 pixels. Getting a matte cut for the comps, max outer dimensions allowed at 20”, might conceivably have the same problem. For personal printing it would be exciting to try. As an aside, I tried pano stitching a series of vertical images taken on the GFX50R recently and my old 2015 MacBook Pro had heart failure. Best regards, Seoul in winter looks way more beautiful than I recall.

Very nice! I’ve published two coffee table books that are nothing but pans. They were shot in the 6x17 format and then later with the Xpan, all with color transparency film. I’ve always enjoyed the creative challenge of utilizing whatever the viewfinder is showing, square, rectangle or panoramic. Thanks for sharing!

The striking thing about this ratio is that it does not feel like that one tries to show as much as possible. It feels like 28mm view with 45-50mm image size like the human eye. Still, well concentrated without distracting, but not cramped with vastness. I really like it. I also use 21:10 for landscape panoramas. I will experiment with this thanks to you! Cheers!

Yes! Sure, you can always crop later, but when your eye encounters that panoramic framed image in the viewfinder, something different does happen. One of the GFX features that got me into that system was the 65:24 "digital X-Pan". Film was becoming a less viable option for me, so a GFX50S II allowed me to sell my X-Pan last year with no real regrets. And it certainly would be welcome if Fujifilm would take a look at including 65:24 in some of their APS-C cameras. The Flickr group "Fujifilm GFX 65:24 Panoramics +" allows photographers share their approaches.

I really like this aspect ratio too, and the way it's non-destructively implemented on the Raw-files of the GFX's, but have never used it vertically before which I will certainly explore more. I have even added it as a standard aspect ratio in Lightroom, so I can equally us it with my Sony-cameras who don't have it natively either.

Cheers, Edwin. Actually, one of my biggest gripes with Fujifilm cameras is that these ratios are NOT non-destructively implemented. You simply HAVE to shoot a jpeg+RAW mode in order to access them. That's one of those things I really wish Fujifilm would fix. But for now, it's a small price to pay in order to have this ratio previewed in camera.

Funny enough, the main reason I just left Nikon and moved to the new Lumix S5ii is simply because it had this ratio as an option. The better autofocus didn't hurt either 😉. Great video and excellent images!

I would like to have it in the X-system, to experiment. Beautiful images. Doing woodland scenes though most of the time I like to compose the image that a 16:9 or 2:3 ratio delivers enough and suitable breathing room. In more landscape settings I do believe the more panoramic ratio can pronounce the vastness of the scene better.

Have you noticed the Mitakon 65/1.4 being very yellow? I didn't before, but I was shooting some comparison photos on my X1D with fixed WB with some adapted Nikon F mount lenses and Mitakon 65/1.4 a couple of days ago. When I copied them to my computer, I noticed the thumbnails of Mitakon photos are very yellow comparing to all my F mount lenses.

So, there really isn't a simple answer to your question, unfortunately. Choose the lens that expresses the world the way you what to with your images. Quick question Dylan; I notice you've displayed your images on a black background in this video. Is that something you would extend to print display? I just wonder if a print in a normal white mat would run the risk of the viewer's eye being taken too readily up or down out of the frame. The black might do a better job of holding the attention in what is quite a narrow frame?

Everything felt fine however, I think I still prefer the physical buttons on my GFX50R but, it might be a matter of habit. A GFX100R would be great ,-D The GF20-35mm looked excellent. The GF80mm being excellent has the problem of chromatic aberrations that appear very easily, which irritates me a lot. I prefer my 110mm ,-) Cheers.

I purchased a GFX 100s at B&H in New York City on August 2021. I have installed recently the latest firmware version (2.12) and I encountered that the front wheel has stopped working. I use my camera always in mode "M", using both the front and back wheel to change aperture & shutter speed. I have noticed that the front wheel has stopped changing any value: "aperture", "s.s." and/or "ISO" (no matter each of which is selected on the menu). In addition, the aperture is not changed despite the GF lens is set the aperture ring to "C" and/or "A". The front wheel does not work no matter I select "M", "A" or any other shooting modes. Only the aperture is changed by the back wheel on "P" mode. Is there any chance to downgrade the firmware version to 2.11, so that to see if the front wheel comes back to work properly, or any other option available?. Any piece of advise would be much appreciated.

Could it perhaps be because you don't shoot Raw + Jpeg, but only 1 of the 2? If that's the case, please try changing it to shooting 'Raw + Jpeg'. The change of aspect ratio is applied to the Jpeg's, and as overlay to the Raw-files whenever you load the Raw-files into your photo editing software. Thus, the change of aspect ratio is non-destructive to the Raw-files, the full Raw-file of the entire sensor remains available and you can change the aspect ratio of the Raw-file to anything in your editing software without a loss of resolution. And the change of aspect ratio is also applied to the viewfinder.

It's not locked. You just need to shoot JPEG + RAW. Very annoying, but that's how Fujifilm does it.

Nothing a little duct-tape can't solve 😜 I agree, it would be nice if they would roll it out further. I think in the past, maybe the vertical resolution was a concern with the 26 megapixel sensors as the change in aspect ratio would reduce the image size to 14 megapixel images (6240 x 2304 pixels), but with the new 40 megapixel sensor in XT-5 there is plenty to work with. I personally think 14 megapixel would also be enough, but that doesn't look good on spec sheet these days.

@@Edwin-- Yeh point taken. Still the current 1:1 and 16:9 crop modes will be having a significant impact in mega pixels so I don't think that's why they don't include an xpan crop as an update. They just haven't because.. they haven't... and they should because its not like folk will upgrade to a GFX JUST for a crop mode... would they... would they?! 😅
