As mentioned in the responses below, the issue with these kits is the variability. If one of these kits has a single small issue, not a real problem. The real obstacles occur when the kit has a few flaws, and one of them is really significant. Most often this is an item like a dead pick up or a bad bow in the neck. That being said there's a lot of money to be saved if you're lucky and patient.
@GunsandGuitars7 жыл бұрын
+bcrich581 yes it's very likely that I got lucky with this kit. In the final build I wanted a reverse headstock so I bought a lefty neck from a brand called "Kmise" and it was terrible in comparison the the neck I got with this kit. I was able to make it usable, but it certainly was not as good out of the box as this one, so I know these can really be hit and miss. Still, even if you only get a good body, or neck, or pickup, this still makes these kits worth the price. You can always just hang it on the wall and call it art for this price!

great video. I'm excited to see how the finished bass turns out. Whats the difference between a percussion bass, and a jazz bass?
@GunsandGuitars7 жыл бұрын
Gene Cavasos great question. Not sure if it was an auto correct, but it's actually a "precision" bass not "percussion." And idea behind the precision design is that the one pickup placement is "precise" or in the "sweet spot" for the best sound. It also uses a split single coil pickup in a humbucker configuration. The jazz bass has two single coil pickups (neck and bridge) that can be used for blending different tones. So it's just two different ways for dialing that "sweet" tone. If you wanna see the progress on my build, check out my instagram or Facebook page. Or just wait a couple weeks for the finished video :)

Mine has a pretty sloppy neck joint, and I hate that my truss rod adjusts with a stupid bar from the pickguard side... But hey, at least I got a pre-drilled hole for my bridge ground! :D I picked up the mahogany body kit just like this... 4 pre-wired pots (no idea what the rating is), side jack hole, pre-drilled neck attaching holes on the body, Musicman pickup at bridge with the P pickups, no gross body filler spots but I do have a bit of a dent on the body I'll have to sand or steam out (steaming = gunsmithing trick, yay hobby crossovers!).... All in all, not bad for the price... Now to figure out how all this goes together... :D

You are right... Whatever the wood, if you put the exact hardware, strings, and get a good amplifier, it surely sound like a proper P bass, even as a fender. The difference is made by woods, but more exactly by the way and the hardware you set on it. What kind of strings did you put on it??????

Routing a grounding hole is easy. Just drill a straight line from the centre under the bridge to the control cavity.
@GunsandGuitars7 жыл бұрын
Easy if you have a skinny drill bit that is long enough to do that. None of mine were, so I found another creative solution. Stay tuned for the build vid!
@muymalo76517 жыл бұрын
Just put a screw on the control cavity and solder the gnd there. Check that the screw is made of a conductive material.
@GunsandGuitars7 жыл бұрын
Zerstörer K you really need to connect the ground to the bridge because then your bridge, strings, and tuners all effectively become part of the shield like a cage surrounding your pickups. Also, if you need even more grounding, your body also becomes part of the ground when you touch the strings, tuners, or bridge. It seriously is worth doing correctly for those benefits. Thanks for the tip though!
@muymalo76517 жыл бұрын
Didn't knew that but now I think about it and you are right.

I bought a POS Ammoon jazz bass that is not put together well. The pickup route outs and are crooked and not centered. The bridge is mounted off center and slightly crooked as well where the strings don't line up with the neck. This thing is not worth returning cause I'll have to pay to ship it back to China. Everyone should be aware of this. Some of them may be better than the one I ended up with. Now, at the very least I'm gonna have to refit the bridge to the body. Plug the holes and move it. Question for Dan, what is the best way to measure and locate the centerline on the body? Do you have a video that explains how to do this? A jazz bass body is not square at the back that could be a point of reference. A straight edge from the center of the nut to center of the neck at the joint and then on back down the body I assume? How critical is that? And when measuring for the correct 34" scale, where would you measure from (at what point) on the bridge to the nut given the range of adjustment considering that 34 inch scale.

Very cool video man. As an armchair luthier I'm always intrigued by these cheaper kits, wondering if the basis for a decent budget build is in the box. for wood faults and excess filler, there's no reason why someone couldn't simply bore those faults out with a forstner bit and glue in something else as an inlay, do multiple bores and inlays to make even more of the feature... or rout some shallow grooves into the body to take out any shitty imperfections and make a feature of the grooves. so many possibilities to deal with unwanted imperfections that don't involve leaving the body looking flat, smooth and featureless like fender always do.

cool video!! very nice but why the strat kit is bad( i was planning to buy one and replace the pickupd as you did)
@GunsandGuitars7 жыл бұрын
Guitar Guy the strat kit was bad for a few reasons, like you said, the pickups were junk. Also, the neck needed a lot of love in order to set up correctly, it had buzzing frets, out of tune notes, dead notes, etc. also unlike this bass kit, the strings that came with the strat were awful. Overall it just needed a lot of work and a few upgrades to be a half decent guitar. This bass, however, was basically good to go as is.

With a headstock like this, have you ever cut it and converted it to more of the Stingray style? IE three tuners on one side and the fourth on the other? If so how hard was it? What needed to be done to make it work?

I'm pretty sure I just bought the same kit. Everything seems exactly the same, but my body didn't have the filler spot (YAY!) and the board is super dark (YAY!) Glad to know the tuners aren't terrible and that the stock strings are ok... If they weren't those could be some expensive upgrades, compared to the original price anyway.

@GunsandGuitars7 жыл бұрын
+deathsicon dude this is total crap. You're the fifth person to tell me this exact thing, that it took forever and you're missing the pickguard and electronics. It sounds to me like they got backordered and the latest shipment shipped without the electronics package. Message the seller and see if they will send you replacement parts. If not, have eBay refund your money. And let me know either way. I want to stop telling people to buy this if the seller won't fix the issue.

+deathsicon well that's good that they are going to get you the replacement parts eventually at least. Yeah pitbull guitars has cool kits. Check out the fretwire too, they have a lot of similar kits and they are here in the US

Finally done the build! Turns out the factory gave them a hard time and they didn't tell me until I asked, took a partial refund and spent it on a loaded/wired pick guard in black that line way better on this color set anyways, now I'm just having problems with setup, seems like the neck is flexing pretty wildly with tuning changes

Are you playing a funked out version of Indoor Games by King Crimson?

+Luigi Hut Jr's I thought I was just playing a lick I made up, I'll have to check out that song though and see how close it was

Yeah I was just guessing off of my memory of what the song sounded like, now that I listened to the song again it's different sounding but close

Also good luck trying to find the song, Robert Fripp has pretty much gotten rid of all his music on streaming websites
