* IMPORTANT NOTE * At the 10-minute mark in this video, I take a jab at Apple trying to show how they support diversity and inclusion by featuring ONLY female developers in their 2022 Mac Studio video. That's the OPPOSITE of diversity and inclusion, Apple! Some thought I was implying that adding more gender diversity ruined the keynotes. That was not my intended message and that is not what my channel is about, so please don't take it that way. Losing Steve Jobs and forgetting the fun, rebellious soul of Apple ruined the keynotes. The only "drama" I want to stir-up on this channel is with grizzled Windows loyalists trying to propagate the platform wars from the 90's. ... or anyone implying Marathon is a 'Doom-clone'... OK, that's it.

It's nice to set the record straight but trying to clarify or explain doesn't usually work in [current year]. Thanks for the great videos! The algorithm blessed me very recently and I have watched a bunch of your stuff. Love the insights and humor. Keep it up! It'd be cool to see a video expanding on your thoughts about the boring-ization of the Apple line-up. Peace!

@@65scribe Thanks for considering it. The 5,1 is the last Mac Pro from Steve reign. It is significant in almost every way. As someone who was born on the 80’s and whose father worked in the publishing industry, I’ve used almost every model of Mac you’ve gone through on your channel. I work for a printing shop in the sign and vehicle wrap side and the print side is fascinating to me, they’ve been all-Mac since 1996 and almost all of the old machines were stored safely in the basement, I’ve since been given free reign over the old machines and as a windows user since 1993 (age 5) I’m loving my transition to Mac person. I’m in the process of converting our pc’s on the sign side to Macs with parallel booted windows 11 to run our wide-format printers. My job and hobby are finally merged and it’s awesome 🤩

I love the running theme of Michael Spindler being the constantly referenced, often unseen, villain of your video reviews. There's always at least one jab to him or that era of Apple in your vids. And I think it's cool you're one of the few to recognize how important Gil Amelio was to Apple. He saved the company and brought back Steve Jobs.
@65scribe
@65scribe 6 ай бұрын
Yes, even though I was a fan of Macs in the 90’s, the company itself didn’t interest me and I took Amelio’s ousting as an indication that he failed to turn Apple around. Once I started digging into what actually happened, it became apparent that he was one of the heroes in Apple’s story, completely overshadowed by Steve Jobs manipulation of events. I don’t blame him for writing a book. In the same research I could not find any redemption for Spindler. My impression of him just got worse the more I looked into events. Thanks for your comment!

Really enjoyed this. Thank you. I once owned a 1.6ghz single G5, circa 2008. Used it as a bit of a media center. One day when I came home, approaching the front window I could see the curtains waving wildly inside the house. My now wife and I exchanged glances, no one was home. Went inside to be greeted to the sounds of the fans at full speed. When a G5 crashed or the software locked up, it seems the PMU or whatever lost contact with the rest of the machine after going "hello? Hello??" for awhile, and hearing nothing back from the temp sensors, it would slowly ramp all fans to max. I have two G5's now, I think that's enough. A working dual processor of some sort, and a non working but not leaking water cooled model of some kind. I forget now. Electricity is expensive here. I calculated that running my Xserver 3,1 with all cores maxed costs more per year, than buying an M2 Mac mini at full retail.

Excellent video! You really captured the whole G5 timeline perfectly, ranging from the initial excitement and optimism to the disappointment in its shortcomings, all the way to the Intel transition. The only thing you really didn't touch on enough was the fact that the PowerBook line was forever slated to be stuck on the G4, but really, one could also argue that was beyond the scope of this video. Still, I love your videos and you dry sense of humor, as well as your passion for Macs of all years. I hope you keep doing these for a long time to come!

Thank you! Very true on the Powerbook G5 'expectation' going on for years only to never appear. I just didn't think there was really much to say on that ... beyond a picture of a fire-damaged Powerbook G4 and captioning it, "Rare Powerbook G5 prototype", or some joke like that. Always good to hear what you like about the videos. That keeps me interested in making more.

I loved my G5 tower and still have it to this day. It has been long dead and replaced, and I have used both PCs and Macs since, but I can’t seem to part with it. It’s an old friend. My current desktop is a M2 Pro MacMini with 32gb of RAM and a total of 6TB of storage (1TB internal, 5TB Thunderbolt) and it flies, running multiple OS’s (including Win11 Pro, which will tell you its processor is “Apple Silicon” if you pull up its specs), but I do miss having all that internal space and slots for cool customization of my old PowerTower. I made a lot of money with that G5, and had a lot of fun. It was a great computer.

The G5s won’t boot, I haven’t figured them out yet. No bad caps though from what I can see.

Personally I own a second-generation 2.0 GHz PowerMac G5 (7,3) with 8GB RAM (max'd out). I'm having a hard time finding a dual-link video card under $100! Absolutely insane price for a 20-year machine. I'd love it if you could dedicate a video on the PowerMac G5 being a viable machine in 2024. Another video you could do is the video card options for these machines. I was actually looking forward to that section - I didn't think it was boring. Anyways, thank you for taking me down memory lane and RIP Steve Jobs!
@65scribe
@65scribe Ай бұрын
Sorry I didn't respond earlier. Thanks very much for your message! You have a mid-range second generation G5? That's one that I've never encountered. One of those models that didn't stand out, but that makes it special and cool in it's own right. An interesting idea on USING a Power Mac G5 in 2024, though I've noticed a couple thumbnails of other videos apparently tackling that question... not that it would stop me. Now, I did actually write that section on the later G5 videos cards, but I didn't have the cards I wanted to talk about so I decided to cut it. Here is the rough script (since at least YOU didn't find it boring - thank you): " To run that 30” display, you were required to buy it with the nvidea 6800 ultra… a long card which had 2 special DVI ports to drive two 30” monitors. it also had 256MB of RAM and occupies the adjacent PCI slot. This time on purpose! In 2005 Apple would offer the option of the ATi X850XT, which could run a single 30” display, plus a second ADC display. Because plenty of those screens were kicking around at the time. It took only a single slot and was equally as powerful as the nvidea monster. In the third generation it was ATI cards across the board. So 9600’s and you got the 9650 as the top end, which would also drive the 30” display, but significantly less powerful than the 9800…. um.. which could not...What?! And so the nvidea 6800 ultra became an option not a requirement, but now called the 6800GT .. which was actually less powerful than the ultra. (I don’t know/this is confusing me) In the 4th generation everything went nvidea. The AGP slot was gone The card just plugged into the fastest pci express slot. The 16x. Adc was now absent on all the cards. The 6600LE in the low end had 128MB of RAM where the higher models had the full 6600 with 256MB ram. They could all handle a 30” display plus a second non 30”, though this card was NOT highly regarded by power users. Now If you wanted two 30” displays off one video card, you’d need the Quattro 4500 with 512mb of vram. Holy crap. Most feel The ultimate card apple offered as build to order was the 7600gt option but those are now very rare. The G5 video cards and new Mac Pro video cards are not transferable between systems, even though they both use PCIexpress, " I hope that helps!

Yeah that's a weird thing for Steve Jobs to say. Because if a workstation is not a "personal computer", the Powermac G5 shouldn't really qualify either. It's not the kind of computer you'd buy for normal home tasks and web surfing.

@65scribe 6 ай бұрын
I know this was closely evaluated when Dell protested Apple's claims in the legal system. For 64-bit, they did side with Apple being first based on the definition of a 'personal computer '. Families bought it, it had strictly consumer apps on it ... something like that. Like I said, it didn't actually mean a whole lot. I am happy to hear that the video holds up for even a non-Apple guy. Thanks!

Thanks! Great memory of the Apple Store theatre. I used the end of that G5 commercial in my video, where Jeff Goldblum speaks. That was all around the ‘fastest computer’ claim. By the time they’d made a judgement against it, Apple had already pulled it, saying that it had run its course anyway. Predictably, Dell was the one complaining.

When I had my hands on a G5, I had one of the liquid cooled later models… and boy it ran like crap no matter what I tried. The G5 is probably the most finicky and accident prone metal Mac to ever exist… rivaling the Performa’s in terms of quality and function issues. Honestly I do not miss than thing, but I’m glad to see you made a new video!! :D (Also, fun fact! The liquid cooled models did NOT use water, but rather a special type of coolant… which happens to be highly conductive. It’s partly why a lot of these liquid cooled G5’s tend to blow up because the coolers leak right into the PSU below them. I also love this era of computers, because the G5 and Pentium 4 were the final chips we got before the great transition of 2006. The year of the core 2 duo and the Intel Macs.

The G5 really was the last of its kind. The final frontier in terms of PowerPC architecture among Apple. But I have to say the case really is timeless. I feel like a lot of modern cases took note of its deliberate organization especially with drive bays and even PSU enclosures that kept it separate from the rest of the machine. Even if that enclosure was sure to probably melt considering the G5 doubled as a space heater.
