Today I scored on some real nice 5 x 12 Pallets that my friend Rusty brought me, We also take a look at a white oak log I pulled down the other day and checked the moisture content and discussed why I don't put little logs like that on the woodmizer.

I agree with your comparison of dollar values for the sawing template drawn on the ends. But, as another commenter pointed out, white oak for woodworking is ~$8/ft. or more for quarter sawn. If you just sawed 1" slabs out of the log, you would come up with 3or4 boards with quarter sawn figure. Buying a quarter sawn 1x8x10' at a retailer is going to set you back about $50. Granted, you are only producing rough sawn stock, but some might be willing to purchase fresh sawn white oak, and then do the drying and planing themselves to save money. I see your logic, so I'd probably be doing the same thing because you have a ready market for the firewood. By the way, I have an outdoor wood furnace which devours thousands of board ft. of wood each winter. I have never actually done the numbers, but I can't imagine what the lumber value of that wood may have been if it had all been put through a sawmill. Have to do what I have to do. Oh, I don't have a mill either.

Would love to get a couple more of those huge pallets. I have one here already that I attached smaller pallets to the side ends and then put braces to keep the end pallets from falling off. I then load the firewood onto the pallet from end to end and front to back. Holds a nice amount of wood for seasoning and can then be moved if needed. I will be getting one more once the ground freezes up. Yard is too sloppy right now to be driving a tractor across it to place the pallet in place. Right now, the pallet is up at my mom's place. This coming year, I plan on building a small either 8' x 16' or 10' x 16' building behind my mobile home where my wood rack is to store my firewood after it has seasoned so that it can finish drying and keep it dry for burning. I have to keep everything up off the ground as I have several natural springs around the property that only stop flowing when things are frozen and that can make a real mess with the water flowing across the lawn.

Another fine production Mike! Enjoy the way you break down production mill vs splitting. I have a 10 year old husky 35 ton splitter that is reliable and hasn't seen a round that it couldn't split. Unfortunately, cycle time is cumbersome unlike your wolfridge. That thing is a machine!!! Waiting for the right time to pull the trigger on getting that wolfridge. Keep these videos coming, always a pleasure to see what you're getting in to. Keep up the good hard work👍🏻

The manufacturing engineer in me suggestion. Create “log end templates” - Use a piece of plexiglass, cut to maximum fit typical log diameters. Center template to center of log. Have multiple templates for multiple cut configurations / log diameters. Outline your template with a marker. Save you from laying out each log with a tape measure and square. Could substitute plexiglass with any hard durable flat material, such as Masonite.

Very interesting. I was born/raised in southwestern PA and I’m familiar with JAGGER [noun. Pittsburghese term for thorn/spine/burr; see jagger bush], JAGGER BUSH [noun. Pittsburghese term for any bush/shrub/small tree having thorns; see jagger], and JAG-OFF [derogatory/disparaging Pittsburghese term for stupid/inept/incompetent person; see prick]. However, I don’t ever recall hearing the term JAG used to indicate weight/overload/stress/bad situation. 2:40... “I was surprised at how heavy these things are. That’s a pretty good JAG there on the RK-55.” Happy New year. Many thanks to you and your family for sharing such inspiring vids.

Looking at the block I guessed 20% Moisture , in my opinion it’s just right. There’s a big difference in sawing hardwood vs softwoods. Makes no difference what people say, it boils down to cost and time effectiveness. Your Mill, your say on what gets milled unless you have a customer that specifies how it’s to be cut. Wish my woods were as easy to work as yours are Mike. Great job as usual on the video

Nice explanation to my earlier question to a previous Woodmizer query....I'd hazard a guess that above 15" (x2 = 30") you'd be able to produce lumber that is of live edge (or general) table top size etc which is of added value .....and it makes complete sense to you (and me!) that below this diameter ...it's firewood !

You don't want boards with the pith but you should center the pith on posts. Nice logs make nice lumber, generally the first two logs in the tree. On the other hand if you needed a bunch of 4x4 the smaller logs work. Having a mill gives you a lot of flexibility. You can also slice down the log without turning it, the edge all the flitches to get the most board yeild. In your case firewood maximizes your profit.

I burn a lot of red and white oak, cutting green or even down and dead for 6 months it takes two full summers and better yet 3 being split and covered to burn to its full heat potential, red oak especially will rot from the outside being all punk wood before the inside is dry, but once dry it is the best for heat production in a wood stove.
