What I absolutely loved about Portnoy's cover is that he didn't have the kit (or time lol) to really recreate what Danny did during the whole breakdown / bridge phase, but he came up with something that was both close and made it his own. And maybe in some context someone could read that as a bit of a slight, but it's nothing short of incredible what he did in just a few hours.

Pneuma has a strange time signature that once Mike thought he'd found the sequence he had a lot more success, treating it as combinations of bars of 6's & 5's but the order of the bar counts over the length of the piece evolves as it continues, hence we have one of the hardest drum tracks to replicate, but in the time he had, Mike killed it. This original video blew my mind. There is no debating that Mike is a fucking LEGEND, but if I’m not mistaken I think it took him 5 hours altogether and the final performance was done in segments due to the complexity and duration of the song. That’s insane!

Didn't see any segments but yeah, he had 5 hours to learn this which is ridiculous considering the complexity of a song that to write

I had a huge smile on my face when he started getting into it. Just his confidence peaking and him getting comfortable with the song after taking so much time and struggling with the time signatures. Yeah it's not Danny, but hot damn did Mike come through in a short amount of time. He rocked it! 🤘🤘

Electric Gypsy is my favorite. The tone and his approach on melody is outstanding. From the band Danger Danger, to his solo carrier and being the musical director for Olivia Newton-John, yet he is a very humble and genuine man. Look at other players like Lari Basilio and even Kiko Loureiro's new solo career after Megadeth.

Something I’ve found over the years that helps me learning these songs is to focus on the hihat/ride sticking patterns.

Portnoy is Portnoy, right, but Danny Carey has a unique way to play the drums of this song. Those strokes between the cymbals and drums and the crescendo, the impact is almost like an logarythmic function, every beat has an ease to it, a modulation, that is much more pronounced in the later's way of playing.
@onelove101unity2 ай бұрын
That's probably because he wrote it and spent years developing it whereas Mike had 5 hours on it. Put some respect on his name.

I love what Mike did there. He’s a monster and it’s nothing short of incredible. And I find it so amazing that he’s down to having the whole struggle filmed. Also when comparing the thing is that Danny plays the song differently than it’s on the album. The 4 on the floor on the Hi Hat for example.
@suffer2475 ай бұрын
I mean, of course Portnoy can play it; he's amazing. But in comparing both, it seems like Carey PLAYS it, Portnoy survives it. Both amazing drummers though.
