Why did you choose this upgrade over a rack and pinion system?
@AmbiVe
@AmbiVe 2 жыл бұрын
The rack and pinion options required more modifications and cost for similar performance. It also came down to what was reasonably available as most of the quality rack and pinion kits with all the extras needed to dial them in and properly finish the install were 6+ months delayed at the time. If I had been replacing the entire front end and going all the way with a new cradle, suspension, etc, I would probably have gone rack and pinion and waited for everything to be available. You can't really go wrong either way if you just need to improve the steering feel or replace a worn system.

Any issues? Still happy you went this route? Thinking about doing it with my 67 Cougar
@AmbiVe

I am still pleased with it. I would say that rack and pinion swapping the whole front system would be best, but this would be the next best option. I haven't had any issues the last 10k+ miles and it feels much better than original.

Great video !!! I wanted to know what color is your mustang ? Thanks
@AmbiVe

Thanks! I have no idea what code this is. It's almost slightly purple blue. I haven't taken a scanner to it yet to try to figure out exactly went into the color.

How does it drive after installing a new Borgeson Steering Box? I never seem to get a good answer as I am on the fence on this box and Rack and Pinion.
@AmbiVe
@AmbiVe 5 ай бұрын
It drives well. I drive much more aggressively than most people and it handles much better than with the old box. Rack and pinion obviously is a very different mechanism and needs much more replaced. If you don't mind the money and parts required, a good quality rack and pinion would potentially feel more tight and precise.

My 67 /289 convertible did not come with power steering. Is this is the kit that I need?
@AmbiVe
@AmbiVe 3 жыл бұрын
You certainly can go this route. My car was power steering originally, but I did this kit and swapped to a manual steering Z bar. If you don't have belts and pulleys already, it's not a bad time to go with a serpentine belt system.

Helping my buddy fix his 65 mustang #1 is safety. His has manual steering I think. What would you recommend to do for a collapsible steering column with power steering? Rack and pinion with electric power steering? Thank you!
@AmbiVe
@AmbiVe 5 жыл бұрын
Safety is actually pretty subjective in an old car like this. A collapsible steering column would be a good idea if you were not going to be using some sort of should harness setup. Really, it's a matter of acceptable risk. I went with the Borgeson setup because I didn't want to have to fight for even more space under my dash (which is already limited) and it is a simple system. Rack and pinion would probably give better precision, but electric power steering entirely depends on the unit. Some are really vague and awful, others are great.

AmbiVe yeah I see where you coming from. If you wanna be safe drive a F250 with steel brush guards and a cage. His ‘65 is a simple car, and I just want to make some recommendations on how to make it the slightest bit safer. Found a cool tank top for the gas tank to protect it from being punctured and a steel sheet behind the back seats as a make shift fire wall. Little things like that. Any recommendations you could make would be much appreciated

Most of the safety comes from preventing a crash in the first place. I focus on ensuring there are good quality, newer, tires. Then I make sure the suspension and alignment are good, brakes are good, etc. Ensuring nothing mechanically will fail you, then crash safety side I try to make sure I have reasonable seat belts and some partial caging on these flexy old cars. I also keep a fire extinguisher made for car fires easily accessible to the driver in my old cars.

Do you remember how many inches you had to cut off of the steering column to put in Borgenson box?
@AmbiVe
@AmbiVe 4 жыл бұрын
I don't remember exactly. I followed their instructions pretty much exactly I believe. It's been a while.

So you didnt show how you attached the steering shaft to the borgenson. Is there fitting that attaches the two? Theres not on my 65. I'm trying to add power steering to it the easiest way. Was thinking about doing one of the electonic power steering conversion off a newer car.
@AmbiVe
@AmbiVe 4 жыл бұрын
On my 67 it uses an adapter to connect the shaft to the Borgeson unit. If you look at the pictures on CJ Pony Parts, you can see a small disc that is a rag joint that adapts between the pieces. If you are looking for extreme precision and feel of a new car, you will need to replace the whole steering system with rack and pinion, but if you just want power steering or to replace a worn power unit, either option should work well for you.

Still enjoying this kit?
@AmbiVe
@AmbiVe 8 ай бұрын
It still works well, no problems to report. I am contemplating moving to rack and pinion so that I can free up some space and play with the front end setup more, but that is more for really aggressive driving/racing.

@@AmbiVe My current gear box is 100% clapped out. So, I considering this conversion to save having to rebuild all of the factory components. Appreciate the quick reply!
@AmbiVe
@AmbiVe 8 ай бұрын
That's why I did it. It was a better setup for me than the factory style, feels good, and I figured it would be a decent upgrade over the old system. There isn't a real one size fits all for steering solutions. Good luck with the project!

Is this possible to do with the engine in the car?
@AmbiVe
@AmbiVe 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think you could do it with the engine in place. I would probably plan to have a lift or tall stands so that you have extra room to get in there and possibly pull the exhaust manifold.
