I recommend buying a new Pitman Arm. In the first generation Mustang manual steering system this was usually an item that NEVER got replaced or greased. In fact there was a time in the not so distant past that you couldn't buy a new one because they didn't make them any more. Now new Pitman Arms are available from the aftermarket and it's definitely worth the investment for peace of mind. After all you've already spent a considerable amount of money for the power steering kit and if it's a Borgeson set-up it's one of the best. Why cheap-out now. One more thing. This video covered a lot of bases. Damned good job Jo Daddy's Garage!

So, to get the correct shaft length, you just tapped the steering shaft up into the column? Can this be done with the engine in? Thanks for your great videos!
@JoDaddysGarage5 жыл бұрын
Yes. I would think it can be done with the engine in place.

THANK YOU...for sharing. How do you like the finish with the black paint? It looks nice almost factory.

It turned out pretty good. I may have to touch it up as I fit the brake lines. But so far, I like it.

Hi, I'm doing similar setup.. about to order the kit but .. this might be a beginners question but how do I measure the sector shaft exactly to make sure I order the right kit? Do I measure the inside of the pitman shaft where the splines are or do I measure the width of the actual sector shaft?

I have a 1968 mustang it was originally inline 6 and I just swapped the motor to a 302. And I bought a borgeson power steering box to I need to get a new steering center link ? Or can I still use the original inline 6 one ???? Please any info will help
@JoDaddysGarage3 жыл бұрын
Hmm. Not sure on that one. Maybe search on NPD for the drag link and see if it defines if a V8 and 6 cylinder are the same.
@williamcharles94802 жыл бұрын
The steering linkage is different between the 6 cylinder and the V8. You will need to change all of the old linkage including the center link over to the V8 design. Your spindle assemblies will also need to be changed over to the heavier V8 type along with the brakes. There's a lot of difference in the suspension and the drive-line between the two engine types. I suggest that you buy the "Factory Chassis Assembly Manual" for 1968. They're about $20 a copy and available from NPD or most any other vintage Mustang parts vendor. There's detailed drawings along with related info that shows the differences between the two quite different cars.

I was under the impression that you had to cut the steering shaft, I have a 68 cougar, so since the shaft is collapsible you just tapped it with a rubber hammer to shorten it?
@JoDaddysGarage4 жыл бұрын
That's all I did. Should be the same for the Cougar, but I can't say for sure.

@@JoDaddysGarage nice!...you happy with the borgeson set up?..I was debating on getting that or rebuilt original parts from chockostang..I looked into getting the box and it was pretty cheap but then you got the ram cylinder, control valve and pump, adding that up plus shipping from Illinois to California I'm better of getting the borgeson box and pump..I was just afraid of cutting my shaft, but looks like it should be the same as yours..did you have to get different pulleys for the pump ?
@JoDaddysGarage4 жыл бұрын
I am happy with the setup. I don't remember what I used for a pulley. There may be a part 2 that shows it. I know I bought an aluminum crank pulley.

Good question. I'm lucky enough to have a full time job working as an airline mechanic. Currently I work 12 hour shifts on the weekends. I'm basically home during the week, and I love doing all kinds of projects. I really enjoy sharing information, and this is the easiest way to get it out there.

Hi, I have a 68 mustang automatic trans. 6 cylinder 200. I bought 999027 Borgeson conversion kit for it Just getting started on it.. Will I need to trim the outer and inner shaft housing at fire wall so it has enough room to fit or move forward? I know it does collaps Thanks
@JoDaddysGarage5 жыл бұрын
Good question. I didn't have to modify mine. I can only assume the 6 and V8 are the same configuration.

You must have quite a bit tied up in parts for this one so far. Hey what is your thing with mustangs? My thing with mustangs is that I had one as my first car when I was just a teenager. I think I am on my 7th now. I have always thought the 68 fastback was the best looking car from the 60's
