Bill, thanks for the video. On Saturday I installed my steering gearbox and cut steering column using your instructions and it is perfect. I removed the old steering gear with no problem. I had to remove the exhaust pipe though to get the new slightly big gear box in. My new power steering pump and finishing up the rest of the install is next. Thanks again.

Saginaw pump or oem pump? And what type of fluid did you use.. mine is with oem pump but not sure of the fluid type to use.
@flashg1331 Жыл бұрын
@@josebecerra6131 Jose I use my OEM pump since my car was power steering equipped. I do have the Saginaw pump for sale on eBay since it only works for manual steering upgrade. I used the STP type F automatic transmission fluid for pre-1981 fords not requiring mercon. Manual trans car will use manual trans fluid for the power steering.

It has not been as simple as they would have you believe. I had to switch out the reservoir/pump to one that had been originally used on Camaro's. The low pressure side connector off the reservoir was hitting the head. The one for the Camaro has a bend in it so the nipple on the reservoir points to the front of the car. March Performance can help with the correct pump/reservoir if the kit you buy is incorrect. I had to use the modified Z bar as my Mach 1 is a four speed car. That has really been the only issue in my install. Well worth the trouble.

I'm in the process of converting my 1970 Mach 1 equipped with the M code Cleveland to Borgeson power steering. I located the pump/reservoir bracket from Summit and the modified Z-bar from Opentracker Racing. Not sure why no one offers a complete kit for the Cleveland engines, so lets hope this goes well and does not mean returning a lot of parts. It would be nice if you had a video on this conversion as well.

Typically when I replace a steering gear box, I center the box first, install the pitman arm to make sure it is dead center and install the steering wheel centered. This way I dont have to worry about counting the turns on the wheel and damaging the turn signal cancel switch, would that work on this kit?
@drivewithpapadave8985 ай бұрын
Curious why the steering shaft is not indexed along with the joint where it fits into the gear box and a corresponding dot on the top to align the steering wheel for centering. Can you address this earlier post "Bill you didn't mention the fact the the steering tube will not go though the firewall plate without slotting it, the original firewall plate is quit a bit larger." Thanks for your video.

Bought the entire Borgeson kit, was told the Borgeson Z bar would clear the Tri Y headers I also got from CJ. It does not! Solution= dimple (hammer) the ceramic coated pipe. Also HYD line was to short. Not happy in FL

Most likely a stupid question, I'm not very knowledgeable yet when it comes to cars, but is it possible to install power steering in a car that doesn't already have it? If it is possible, is it simple enough to be worth it?
@Zerogivengarage7 жыл бұрын
This kit is also available on our website as a power steering conversion. Same install except you add a power steering pump and brackets, you won't have to change the center link.

What do you do if someone worked on the car previously, installed the new shaft so now there’s a huge space between the wheel and the column which is why my blinkers don’t turn off, and you no longer have the original shaft for a baseline measurement to do your new cut? Thanks

Very helpful video. Can you tell me if the installation calls for centering the steering box /shaft as called for by the factory manual? Factory manual calls for measuring worm bearing preload check using an inch-lb torque wrench with the steering wheel off center. The adjustment according to the book calls for tightening or loosening the adjuster lock nut on the box and adjusting also turning the sector shaft screw in order to center the shaft in the tube. Does the Borgeson unit require similar adjustments for centering the box and or shaft? Thanks Tony
@christopherlynn46924 жыл бұрын
Yes, you will need to center the pitman shaft., other wise it will steer more one direction then the other. Your pit man arm will only be able to be installed on the shaft in one position so it is important to have the box centered. Split lock to lock. No need to measure bearing preload.
