Living on the east coast we had a small chain of trucks tops called WilcoHess. They were small truck stops with souniver shops called Stuckey's. Stuckey's sold candy, salt water taffey, pecan log rolls, etc. Each WilcoHess had a small parking lot which was never full and a fast food restaurant located on site. I could always find parking late at night. When Pilot Flying J bought WilcoHess the truck stops immediately began filling up early every night. Too bad.

You are so right about the chain truck stops, they need some maintenance. Just the smell in the parking areas is horrendous! Some drivers need to get some manners about themselves.

I couldn't agree with you more Dan regarding truck stops. I was running a flat bed about a year ago, did it for a few months, trying to find a clean servicable truck stop to refresh yourself anymore is becoming a job in itself. People just have no appreciation or pride in their work, If an employer would praise their employees with a pat on the back, a hand shake and a big thank you daily, thinkgs would be alot different, I chock it up to Corporations and bean counters are only concerned with their own gain, just my two cents, what do I know?!?...lol😏👍

Nice video Dan! Your a professional. I think there is big percentage of truckers that turn these truck stops to crap. Eventually ownership can't keep up with wear and tear + the damages.

I pay extra at the smaller places just to avoid the chains. As long as they take comdata I'm good. And often they aren't biodiesel. So you kinda get your extra money back with a better quality of life, time, fuel economy, and fewer filter changes.

I moved to the country years ago and they built a loves of the expressway. Soon after it opened I moved back to the suburbs couldn’t take country living and when I left the loves had pretty much put the two locally owned stations out of business. Last week I drove through that town for work and one of the local stations is closed and the other looks like it isn’t far behind. But be Ouse it was lunch time I had to stop at the loves and get some McDonald’s and I was shocked to see what a 8 years old loves looks like. The place was so dirty and run down I decided Chips and a coke was a safer bet than anything prepared anywhere near there

Love Mom and Pop truck stops. You will find some good food at many of them in the right area. Yea, many truck stop maintenance programs are not doing their job. I'm a new driver doing OTR in the eastern 37 and a lot of the Pilots are in just as bad a shape as a lot of the little gas 'n' sips out there. Really goes to show how difficult it is to maintain these facilities. What's even more sad is the prevailing feeling among the staff at a lot of these mom-and-pop shops that their days are numbered. I try to stop at them often and I always spend money when I do. They're invaluable.

Good video dan. The truck stop guide is a great tool. Always has been. But....I used to be able to read it easier. Is the print smaller or are my eyes getting worse? Nah, can't be that. I think the elog regs helped kill the small truck stops. If every little stop didn't eat up my time, I'd definitely stop for a real sit down meal at cafes, restaurants instead of the chains more often. It's a big reason there isn't the camaraderie anymore. No time to sit, chat and make a friend. Go go go

It always cracked me up how New Hampshire does it. I guess in NH only the state sells liquor, and at the border crossing theres this big rest area and NH State liquor store. I'd see people in there with shopping carts full of liquor

Ten there were state run 'Package stores' for the hard stuff (Grocery sold Beer & Wine) when I was Stationed in Norfolk VA. A place I went into had this gorgeous bar with no one at it. When I asked, 'You can only have/sit a bar, if you sold just beer or wine. Also you can't carry your own drink if you join another table, the staff has to carry it.

I don't know about now because it's been years. But I used to work at a convenient store. Gas and diesel was Available but The owner told me once that he only made a few cents on a gallon of gas or diesel Where places like that make their money is exactly what you did. Went in and bought something in the store. I guess what i'm saying is they make more profit off of what you buy in the convenience store Then the fuel that you're going to buy from them. So don't feel too bad about not spending the extra money on the fuel Because it's cheaper at one of the larger chain truck stops.
@spencers4121 Жыл бұрын
This is the case, profit for a store is small on fuel. They literally make their money on items sold in the store

South in general is still riddled with dry counties, even blue laws. Oh well all the counties around them thank them for the extra tax revenue. I remember working in a grocery store in the 90's, we had a younger couple trying to buy beer on Sunday. They were shocked to find out we couldn't sell it to them.

The big chains cater to big trucking companies with a fuel discount... I'm a 1 truck O/O and with my Fleetone card I get a better price at the mom and pops. Plus they usually have clear diesel instead of that yellow corn garbage that plugs up the filters faster.
@brianbridle951 Жыл бұрын
UK roads are suffering the same as yours. Our diesel is around $6.0 a US.gallon. All the M&P stops wer taken by big business who charge you to park (If they allow trucks in at all).

Hi Dan, I live in Pottsville, which is about 13 miles west of Blackwell. Pottsville is in Pope County, which is dry. There are some ways around that though. Several of the restaurants in Russellville serve alcohol by the drink. I first thought you were talking about stopping at the stop in Ozark. I don't drive a truck, but stop there frequently. I hope it doesn't go down hill like the one in Blackwell has.
