I watch everyone from Roman and Nico to Teddy and Adrian. I’d have to say I might like this channel the most because of the family unit these guys have. Although, I always show love to the watch enthusiasts that give Omega, Breitling, Cartier, IWC, Longines, and other great brands with heritage and history that aren’t just about investment and money. Hi Charlie my friend, 😳😱 What you are saying regarding the helium escape valve if totally wrong. The helium escape valve is only and solely used by saturation divers who spend time in hyperbaric chambers / caissons. These divers: 1. Dive deep enough so that compressed air cannot be used anymore as at some pressure it becomes toxic to the human body. They have to breath an oxy-helium mix. 2. Rest time i.e. meals, sleep, shower, etc… is spent in a hyperbaric chamber / caisson when not in the water. The chamber / caisson is dropped down to the bottom / work site depth during the work / exploration phases. The chamber / caisson is hoisted back up on the support vessel deck or compartment with the divers inside whilst being maintained at bottom / depth pressure. The mixture they breathe in the chamber / caisson is the same they breath when under water and it is maintained at the bottom pressure. It is during that time spent in the chamber / caisson that helium molecules will penetrate the divers watches. 3. When returning in the water the helium which went into the watches whilst in the chamber / caisson will remain in the watches providing the pressure remain the same and the diver does not ascend which would reduce the pressure and lead to expansion of the helium inside the watch. 4. Once the dive is over, the divers cannot be brought back to atmospheric pressure brutality just like that because in such case they would explode and die. Hence they will remain in the chamber / caisson which pressure will be gradually decreased _ according to the decompression tables _ as the equivalent of a very very long ascent time wise which can take days, depending on the dive depth and duration. 5. It is during this long and slow decompression phase spent in the chamber / caisson that the helium entrapped in the watch will expand as the external pressure will drop. When the difference of pressure in the watch gets 5 barg higher than the chamber / caisson pressure the helium escape valve will lift from its seat and release any excess pressure from inside the watch. This will lead to an equal pressure inside the chamber / caisson and the watch, until it lifts again. 6. As a rule of thumb the pressure increases by approximately 1 barg for every 10 meters under water. If you assume a group of saturation divers working at 350 meters, they will be submitted to a 35 barg pressure… whereas at the surface we are breathing at 1.01325 bara = 0 barg… So the helium valve will lift every 50 meters depth of equivalent pressure. 7. Divers who will go for a few hours dive let say at 100 metres will revert with oxy-helium mix to avoid sickness and toxicity. They will have to perform decompression stops at specific depth and for specific durations. Since they will not spend any time in a hyperbaric chamber / caisson but only in the water, their watches will not see any helium ingress. The helium escape valve will therefore not operate. 8. Helium gets into the watches because 1. it is one of the tiniest molecule and 2. under pressure it permeates through everything. Water, even at high pressure will not get into the watches. The helium escape valve is for when you are ascending, not going down, and functions in the diving bell not underwater. Rolex built the escape valve in response to Comex divers complaing that the tiny helium molecules from the diving bells compressed atmosphere couldn't escape quick enough and the crystals would pop off. Omega, also a Comex supplier built a watch completly impermeable to Helium or Oxygoen, the Plo Proff.
