So some big bowls in Lavaflek for the dinner service. The last piece for the water feature. And beautiful vase that cracks because the cookie gets trapped in the foot I have carved out.

Thanks for including the before/after glazing. It really helps to see how thick the glaze is, potential application points, and test-like results. You help many of us to save a lot of money with the testing. THANK YOU!

Love your videos, I like it when people share everything, not just the good parts. We can only learn with experience and take the good and the bad as equally important parts of the journey. I open the kiln a few cm when it has cooled down to below 100 Celsius, patience is a thing right? ;-) When I saw your cones I beleive you said cone 7 is not completely over? However, these selfsupporting cones work differently. When the tip of the selfsupporting cone has bent down to the top of the little triangle on the bottom is has reached temperature so I think this firing went over cone 7. Maybe that is why your beautiful pot sagged over the cookie? Just my thoughts, hope you don't mind. Thanks for sharing your journey! Greetings from Bonaire, Monique.

Sorry to hear about your mom that is stressful. As far as kiln opening I have a vent and if I'm using Amaco ancient copper I turn off the vent right after the kiln is done firing and don't open anything until it's 150 f or 66c. I want the crystals to form by allowing the natural cooling. If no ancient copper I would leave my vent on and still wait until it's at 150 f/66C before opening but I'm paranoid and not an expert at all. I'm still learning out here in California.😊 Leaving the vent on after the firing is completed cools the kiln down faster. I love your water features. This is gorgeous. I bought pallidum because of your videos. Not sure what I will do but your videos are very informative. I had my kiln fire to a hot cone 7 which is not what I wanted. My ancient copper pot fused to the kiln shelf and had spider cracks similar to your iron luster piece. I think the cookie got stuck and didn't allow the clay to shrink so it cracked same as mine did when I struck to the shelf. It's a bummer my ancient copper came out perfect. I stare at it in my studio. Trying again.

Lois, I have been watching you since the beginning. Am so proud of your progress and how you have advanced in your craft. Waiting for your first 20,000 subscribers. I have never used cookies on my pots, rather, prefer using stilts or nothing, depending on the glaze I use. The midnight sky bowl, pitcher, and water feature are fantastic. Keep on teaching us. Thanks

Hi Lois, appreciate you sharing your knowledge (and mistakes!) with us. The glaze on that cracked jar is GORGEOUS, I hope you'd be able to replicate that in future pieces. Cheers from Auckland. P.S. I think you wanted us to remind you not to lean on your kiln, haha xx

I am so very sorry to hear about your mother. I pray everything goes well for all of you!! That water feature is absolutely incredible!! Wow! Great job! What kind of clay do you use for your cookies? I use high fire clay so that no matter how high the kiln gets the cookie won’t react under the pot. Also try and make the cookies thin so you aren’t adding even more heat to the pot. I really pray that helps. I love your attitude when you see a pot that has something wrong with it! I am cursing and mad and you’re just so light hearted!! Lol. Congratulations on the new grand baby as well. How exciting!!!

I take out glaze after it hits 190F, some kind of glaze reaction occurs at 212F from what the big guys say. My kiln is vented, so no propping done. Love your work. Live in Tennessee

I've been propping open by a couple inches from around 150-180c and then unloading below 100c with heat proof leather gloves. I'm not good at being patient. As the weather gets colder I'll probably leave it longer to cool in the kiln to avoid and thermal shock. Your water feature looks amazing!

Uneven drying can also set up a piece to warp. By uneven I mean it dries quicker on one side than another. If there is a fan or air flow across a piece it can set it up for such. The chattering texture can also set up some tension in the piece.
@LoisHook
@LoisHook Жыл бұрын
IVe never had a price to warp. Are you meaning because I use a heater to dry and spead up the glazing time that can cause issues. ??
@wadewoehrmann2835
@wadewoehrmann2835 Жыл бұрын
@@LoisHook yes if it dries out too fast and uneven the stresses caused can cause warping or cracking when glaze fired.

I wait until it's below 300F (which is about 150C) and open the lid about 2 inches and prop it open with a shelf support, then wait until the pieces cool to the point where I can handle them with gardening gloves. My thought is that since my pieces can be baked, taking them out at less than oven temp (180C) should be fine. Haven't had a problem yet.

Hope your Mum is able to be comfortable. I have a small test kiln so I will do a test pot and open the kiln @ around 500 degrees Fahrenheit as I have always wondered how the raku pots can be taken out while glowing. Type of glaze might be a factor. Another terrific load, really nice. Cheers...Freddie

@@LoisHook just watched an electric rake demo. He took his out at 1800F and put in small trash can with newspaper. He uses rake clay and rake glazes, but also mixed some stroke and coat colors on top of rake glaze. My other potter friend takes out at 1100F.

Hi 👋 I've never commented here but ❤ 😍 💖 your work. Raku. Yes 1700° F is a very common temperature to put into combustible material and some after that, into water making steaming bubbles. Raku is not functional because it is crazing crackerling, popping and more times than regular firing breaking. Raku won't even hold water. If you don't want crazing, cracking, platters breaking, and so on, please wait until 50°C or 150°F. You might be fine opening hotter for 20 kilns then #21 you have pieces for a show or commissioned sale, you don't want to be sad.

Love your work! We have been doing pottery about the same amount of time. I have a question- I absolutely LOVE the vase you did several months ago with the mayco light magma on the outside and the red glaze inside. The crystalline/ glass look of the red is amazing! (And in the bowls that you glazed similarly too). Can you tell me more about the red glaze. Is it a celadon? Did it do that cool effect as a result of the magma mixing with it or did the glaze itself have ingredients that made it have the glass shard looking bits? I would love to try to replicate that look but I don’t think I have access to red glaze here in the states. I can, of course, get the light magma. Thanks again!
@LoisHook

Thanks for the comment. The red is by Scarva a Uk company. Terracolor glutt orange and red. The Yellows and lines are when I have put the magma over or under to get a run and reaction. www.scarva.com/en/Stoneware-Glazes--1180C---1300C/c-287.aspx?CategoryIDs=89
