I had a new 1969 Schwinn Varsity. Sierra brown. I had every accessory on it. I used it for six years and put over 16,000 miles on it. The best bike I ever had. Yes, heavy and clunky but it was rock solid reliable. Bikes today are toys or junk in comparison. The #1 negative were the brakes. In the rain applying the brakes actually made the bike go faster!. This was solved with better brake pads. Ten or 15 speeds is workable and practical. Any more then that is just useless pandering to ego.

Beautiful Bike. I own the same bike. My Mom and Dad bought it for me in 1968. But my serial #s show it to be a 1967. The price was around $78.00 with the chrome fenders. I don't remember chocolate being a color in that year. Mine is green. Please fix the valve stems, they need to come out of the rim at a 90 deg angle. I road as a kid what would have been cycle cross these days. The bike is indestructible. ENJOY what was one of the best bikes of its time. And I love it to this day. I have looked at $500 +$ Trex bikes and would rather have my old bike. And I believe the tires are not original. All the Schwinns had gum wall tires back then. ENJOY !!! Beautiful !!!

I would replace the tires with Continental Durashells or Continental Gatorskins, if you don't want flats. That's the first thing I replace when I buy a vintage road bike.

I have a trick for tire repair. As you put the glue inside the tire have a patch ready and you put a match to the glue vulcanizing the tire from the inside and then apply the patch and you have a brand new tire.

straighten the valve stem let air out of tires and tires should easily rotate to make stems straight otherwise you will be replacing the original innertubes. also minoura sells chrome stick on plates for that chain-stay tube which we put on a lot of our classics to cover those nicks up. awesome bike great condition.

🎉Nice work. I picked up a similar Varsity from the ‘70s. Question to all. I hate a downward riding posture. I want upright. I have some wide, quality handlebars that will fit. Do you think the Varsity would look totally weird with an upright set up? And what about the brakes? Has anybody had experience with such a set up? Cheers … happy riding.

If 2nd letter is a d, as he said, it's a '68. '65 was "A"
