This week I'm putting in insulation and damp proofing, with some local help of Julian, Davide and Jordi. The rainy weather is not behind yet, which is a good test for the drainage system.

One of my mothers favorite things to do on a summer day was to sit outside and watch her chickens scratching for food. She said they are hard workers and all their energy went to providing her with eggs.

I have been watching you for over a year. If your videos don't win some kind of award from KZbin something is wrong with the system. When that bird (Chickadee?) on the side of your home came out from what I hope is a nest it absolutely melted my heart....wow...

Texas. Martijn is a real cowboy. Not a movie from 1955. Yeah, it's filmed, but so much better than the half hour we were raised with. Not knocking the basic values expoused by the old time westerns. Movies that tried to set an example, but not the weirdo stuff that goes on randomly now. Too deep, sorry. How is his bike ride not like a cattle drive?

Gazebo with a wooden roof covered in green metal ...anchored with four stone pillars and huge wooden beams anchored & cemented into holes on top of the large square/rectangular stone pillars. It could be large enough to have a grill underneath and picnic tables & be like an outside room ...kind of like what you see at the best American national parks.

@@renabarnett2238 No I am a good 60-70 km or 35-40 miles from the fires so am safe. The area in question is home turf as i grew up nearby. I know people who live there. I think the authorities are keeping a tight lid on the number of homes/structures lost just to minimize fear and stress, I get that and that they certainly would not have an exact handle on numbers. Given that as of today some 16000+ people have been ordered evacuated from their homes I think the devastation is going to be huge. Yesterday there was a figure of 10 houses gone, today in the news i hear dozens. These are heavily treed large lot homes, few homes could escape fire if the trees around them catch. I fear entire subdivisions are being layed waste. Not 10's but 100's of homes. I heard a report earlier that there are 1st responders that have already lost their homes and continue the battle to save their friends and neighbors homes. Just how does one deal with that ?

While you have the excavator you can greatly surface water running down to the cabins by digging some diagonal furrow drains just up the hill from the cabins. This may divert water down and to the side. That is if you haven't already done so.

Seems like a lot done this week. Don’t forget that the back filled dirt will settle and possibly affect the grade. Thanks for letting us experience a little piece of heaven over there.

Hey Martijn! I realy enjoy your Videos and they are a perfect way to calm down on a sunday evening! Next tuesday I will get a colonoscopy and my head has been constantly thinking about it. Your Video made me at least relax for a little bit. Thank you for your continuous uploads and hard work. Greetings from Germany

@@misscrafty5904 Thank you! Your words mean a lot to me 😊 It is my first time getting anasthetics. It makes me very nervous, but I will do it for my health. I wish you a great week 🙂

The first time is a little daunting - the procedure is painless (unlike what most stand-up comedians would have us believe😂) - my husband and I are veterans of this procedure and it is an excellent preventative precaution. All the best for next week.

Good to see you back and a great time to visit your nearby waterfalls and rivers - so glad you weren't there with all that rain it would have been disturbing and Johannes was right with the plastic sheeting. It must be a comfort to have his sage advice. You suit your red checked shirt. Looking a bit World War 1 around your stone home but it really is getting there now isn't it? The inside is huge now compared to when you first entered it as the floor level is so much better. Exciting times for you and for us seeing it all coming together. Alot of people will envy your position up there away from troubles - weather is natural but people are another dimension.

Thank you for the step-by-step explanation of the French drain system. I understand the concept, but I never could quite picture how it all worked so that was very helpful. And yes, like everybody else is saying you have an absolutely gorgeous spot. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Question? Why not just dig all dirt away from side of stone cabin and then just reduce the slope angle of dirt to 20 or 30 degrees. With that backhoe you cld have just dug out some more dirt and change angle leaving a small walkway around building. Just wondering. Seems best to just have nothing against wall. Thanks. Love your channel and your keen eye for photography.

When the melodious music begins to softly play signaling the closing moments of your video I always feel a little sad for the ending. That’s how wonderful it is to visit your homestead each week- you just want to linger. Thank you . See you next week. 😊

Great work, have been watching the giro de italia and the rain has been very heavy, maybe the heaviest in one hundred years. The chickens are completely relaxed and are very content to be around you, love the enviroment you have enhanced

Might be a good idea to get some perennial and annual rye grass over the excavation and backfill areas to establish a turf matte that will absorb some water and direct overland water flow. Even if only temporary, reduces erosion and muddy mess while continuing your excellent reconstruction.

Your closing words were so heartening and I can just see the grass growing around the cabin and some wild daisies and flowers amongst it. I think the chickens will lay once they feel comfortable, fingers crossed. How lovely to have fresh eggs. Julian, Davide and Jordi worked so hard with you - hats off to them. I like how you plan and your voice is contented and never angry or fed up and you just get on with it - a true test of your character. You are winning and the elements have been against you but it all feels so good right now. You have your espresso maker and pets and the summer is coming - all feels so positive. 🙂
