I had a Jack Russell Terrier and she was the gentlest, kindest family pet... except for the two times she encountered rats and she instantly transformed into a wild animal. It was amazing how she knew purely by instinct to pick them up by the neck and shake them, causing instant death.

It is impossible for me to think of Europe---and in particular England----without thinking about how many wonderful, amazing, and talented terrier dogs that have come from there. It is a job too see a dog doing an excellent job, mostly without a great deal of training, just their natural-born instincts to do the job for which they have been bred for hundreds of years. I had two sweet, adorable Westies. Don't let the cuteness fool you. Occasionally in the fall, I'd get mice in the house, and my sweet lap dogs would turn into killing machines. A mouse ran under the stove one day, and one of my dogs sat there for two days waiting for her chance to rid me of the pest. She was successful. It's not like a a cat playing with a mouse either. It's a bite and a shake of the head and it's over.
