Maybe in personality or subjective opinion but the trope goes that henry is considered likely the most attractive British monarch, as well as regarded as highly intelligent and talented in many desirable traits. You have to bear in mind, this guy was a literal giant at the time, with the physical structure of a top athlete and many saw him as a saving grace, as he wasn't a warmonger like his father, at least for the first half of his life. He aged terribly mind you, both in looks and personality. Also at this time, a lot of royalty was super inbred, so just having a relatively normal looking guy would put you miles ahead of the competition. i mean, just look at the Hapsburgs who ruled in the same time period, now they a ugly lot.

In my view Anne of Cleves is the most fortunate and also the most intelligent of Henry VIII wives. Although she didn't receive a proper education and didn't speak English, she learned quickly and was able to get out of the marriage alive and as a wealthy woman. In serveral sources it was mentioned that she was very kind and gentle. And concerning her appearance she was often described as tall, slim and of average beauty. By the way isn't it remarkable that a man who was twice her age, had at least twice or three times her weight and had a smelling wound on his leg complained about her lack of beauty? Who asked about her feelings when she saw him ?

Out of all the portraits of Henry's wives, in all honestly, I've always thought Anne of Cleves was the prettiest. She seems to have had a gentle kind of beauty which suits her as she was said to have been a very kind lady. Henry calling her "ugly" was yet more proof of his narcissistic rage. Anne rejected him and that bruised his fragile ego ... for a king who loved to act tough and flaunt his power ... he sure was sensitive. The fact that Anne remained close to both Mary I and Elizabeth I after the divorce from their father speaks volumes.

Henry got his knickers in a twist because Anne didn't react the way he wanted her to when he played his usual game of meeting her unannounced and in "disguise". What had been a charming if somewhat cheesy, gesture that a handsome, athletic, young Henry had played on Katherine of Aragon and others wasn't so charming when coming from an overweight man who wasn't aging well or smelling especially nice. All poor Anne knew was that this unappealing stranger was pawing at her and she reacted like any well bred young woman of good character from Cleves would have. So Henry had to make up excuses for not wanting to bed her because his ego was way too bruised to make the union work. Also, pretty dang sure he already had his wandering eye on Catherine Howard...every time he had previously gotten rid of a wife or mistress, it was because he had fallen hard for a new candidate.

Beauty is often subjective and always debatable. The most historically beautifully thing about Anne of Cleves was her intelligence. @intogreen if you think she’s ‘ugly as hell’ you’ve only fallen victim to society’s incredibly unhealthy and sexist beauty standards. Yes, let women be ugly, but calling someone pretty when they literally are is not ‘gross and sexist.’ You might might not do it to get laid, but you certainly hate on your own gender. Stop spewing this garbage you think is feminism and sit down. There are much more important issues to be discussed and acted on than women calling each other beautiful.

Based on the Holbein portrait I have always thought Anne of Cleves was beautiful. But who knows how she actually looked. Apparently there was debate at the time about which wives were beautiful. Jane Seymour was described by one observer as ‘the fairest of his wives’ but her most recognisable portrait isn’t really what most of us today would view as beautiful. Things like clear skin, healthy hair and teeth were probably a lot rarer then so were valued more. And they seem to have liked thin lips.

According to the portraits which we have available, Anna von Cleves was much the most attractive of Henry's wives; (at least two of these are lost, but they were clearly copies of earlier portraits). However, at this point in his life, Henry was being forced to face his incipient impotence, and being the kind of man he apparently was, it seems quite natural that he would be the first in line to blame the first available woman for this problem.

For some reason, in all my studies on Tudor history, I have always had this picture in my mind of Anne of Cleves as a young Celine Dion. She is pretty but not beautiful, she kind of always looked 32 even when she was 19. She was competent, talented, purposeful. Her qualities could be both intimidating...and underwhelming as she was almost too well trained to please/perform. Although not flirtatious or coquettish, as Henry seemed to enjoy, she could be charming in a docile way. She is impressive, but not surprising. All-in-all, Anne got the best deal. However, she is proof that girls who follow the rules may not "make history", but they can live contented, happy, and smarter every day.

Even the most mundane characters from history are infinitely more interesting when you do a video on them. I'd like to see some artists too. I don't know how many paintings there are of Shakespeare but that would be an interesting. Also I'd love to see Da Vinci. I know very little about his personal life except that he released maybe 15 pieces of art in his life.

With all the Tudor videos, do you think you could do one with Mary Tudor? Henry VII and Elizabeth of Yorks daughter? Not only that but compare her pictures to those of Anne Boleyn, Edward VI and Elizabeth I? Just to show the similarities of all three and prove that the pics we know of Anne Boleyn were indeed copied from her daughters look? Lolol

@@thedativecase9733 well those were some strong words from a man who had a smelly old diabeter wound and at the time had no more tight body parts himself 😆 actually the propable reason for these nasty words were because the kings ego was wounded by Anna, she after all did not recognise the king when he first came to see her alone and started wooing her, kissed her even. Anna was not impressed on the old fat guy and acted very modest and uninterested. Also, Henry was known to have loved small breasts, Anna had medium sized breasts and Henry notedly was not fond of that. "Looseness" was propably a normal bigger breasts that he had never felt before 😅 We have to remember that he had an extremely fragile and big ego and his personality grew worse aften his jousting accident.

@@thedativecase9733 also I think all portraits of Anna of Cleves are beautiful, qtleast I can't see how Catherine Howard was a "beauty" in a sense that she was described, not ugly not saying that at all. Maybe it all boils down to differend beauty standards, after all little later in the tudor period womans sexiest part was considered their forheads, that is why Henrys daughter Elizabeth shaved her eyebrows completely when she was and adult. Tall hairline and browless look was the hottest thing at the time for women and before that there were also beauty stardards. Maybe they saw something we did not, maybe Anna really reminds too much of our own beauty standards as we see her pretty?

Henry liked small, petite, vivacious, outgoing ladies. Cromwell knew Anne was not any of that. I think she was pretty, just not Henry's idea of pretty. Sadly she was also the only queen who likely had no intrigues or designs on the Kings power. The one who probably would have been content just making him happy bearing him children. Lucky and smart that she took Henry's annulment offer and actually lived quite well until the end of her days.

I was reading a biography of the Tudors, and I remember reading that Henry was completely smitten by the "pocket portrait" he was sent of Anne. I remember his letters to her that he kissed her portrait every night and couldn't wait to meet her. Ties in with this channel of what did she really look like as when he met her, he was outraged she looked nothing like her portrait and remember that he had the portrait painter executed for catfishing him. Doesn't mean she wasn't attractive, just not what he was expecting, and apparently he wasn't what she was expecting, so they definitely started off on a wrong foot

Don't forget that Henry VIII is also the grandson of the Margaret Beaufort, the founder of the Tudor Dynasty. Margaret Beaufort was a 13 year old single mother and mother of Henry VII, Henry VIII's father. Her entire life spanned the whole War of the Roses. Even as a young woman, she played the whole medieval political game very well. She maneuvered and married the right men to advance her social standing to make sure her son, Henry VII, became king. Oh and she chose the men she would marry, something that was not done during those years.

I can't remember if this is a fact it a legend, but I recall the story of the meeting between Anne of f Cleve's and Henry VIII. A joust was being held in her honour and Henry tried to play a prank on her. He went with some other men and I believe disguised in some way? But he flirted with her and tried to kiss her. She was appalled, because in her eyes, an unknown old, fat, smelly man was approaching her, the future Queen , and trying to smooch her! She reacted very strongly with disgust before he revealed himself and then she had to try to recover from that, but he was pissed and insulted and huffed off. It's speculated that this negative interaction affected his view and opinion of her romantically. They did become friends later. She strikes me as maybe we a "one of the guys" type of gal. No nonsense, down to earth and practical. That would NOT appeal to Henry romantically, lucky for Anne!!!
