I'm not convinced that everything that happened to Eddy 2 and Gaveston was just bc of homophobia. I think it was bc Gaveston was a turd and causing E2 to be a terrible ruler, and that affected everyone. They just so happened to be gay.

I'm not so sure. I am not a history expert but usually the nobility didn't receive the kind of torturous deaths that lower born people received. They would be put to death but this was usually just beheading. Also the hot poker through the anus seems to be saying something.

" Once at the castle, he was kept in the custody of Mortimer's son-in-law, Thomas de Berkeley, 3rd Baron Berkeley, and John Maltravers, who were given £5 a day for Edward's maintenance" from wiki. According to the bank of England, 5 pounds back then, 1320, is worth £4,618.17 today. A day? OMG. Kingly price for......holding a king lol. What the heck?

Ed II wasn't accused of being homosexual until almost 200 years after his death. There is no contemporanous account of him and Piers or Hugh being sexual partners. What Ed was accused of was being a really awful king.
@mangot589
@mangot589 24 күн бұрын
Maybe he was, and maybe he wasn’t. I personally think he was in love with Piers. . But you’re correct. Nobody gave a hot patootie who he slept with. What they DID care about was Piers being given lands and titles that they felt belonged to THEM. UPSTART! We all know that gay guys have kids all the time to this day, and back then, as now, the main objective of royals is to have an heir. So having his wife have 4 kids really doesn’t mean too much to me. Maybe they really liked each other. Maybe they just did their duty. 🤷‍♀️

Scholars are in agreement about two things regarding Edward II. That there is not enough evidence to say he was a homosexual. In addition , if he was it would not have mattered to his nobles if he had been a good and fair King.

I heard the story more than 40years ago, his wife gave the order for him to be executed, there should be no marks on his body, but he was to suffer. The way I heard it he was taken and a funnel like tube was inserted into his backside and molten lead was poured into him making him suffer beyond imagination before actually dying. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned’

@pauldh62
@pauldh62 5 ай бұрын
The account I heard was that Edward II went willingly to Berkley Castle, believing it to be safe. He was mistaken, seized and imprisoned by his wife, Isabella, 'The She Wolf of France'. There heated skewers were placed through a hollow bung into the King's anus. The cries from the king were described as 'screams from hell' and heard outside the castle walls in a nearby village. The process was said to have taken all night, left no outward marks on the body, so cause of death was disguised, was torturous and the traditional punishment for homosexual activity which was regarded as a capital crime in that era. There is also an account that casts doubt that this ever happened. It stated that Edward III after his accession as king was seen on numerous occasions conversing privately with a monk who resembled his father. Monasteries and nunneries, in that age, are believed to have been where the wealthy gay community could live out their lives more fulfilled and in safety.

King Edward II, ands his Lovers Piers (de) Gaveston and Hugh (le)Despenser the Younger were ALL my Ancestors. Piers and Hugh married sisters, who were also Nieces of King Edward II. King Edward II's wife also had a Male Lover who was also Married. Her Lover & his wife were also my Ancestors! Edward III overthrew his mother & lover. In the end, All the Men (all my Distant Great-grandfathers) were Executed, in part for Whom they Loved. Only the Women survived, and Son Edward became King Edward III.

It is far from certain that Edward II was killed at all. There is pretty compelling evidence that he survived his deposition and escaped captivity and thereafter lived in hiding on the continent well into the reign of his son Edward III. Allison Weir believes that Edward III and his father actually met and spent a couple of months together in Europe about a decade after Edward II's abdication so that Edward II could see his son and grandchildren before he returned to the Alpine monastery where he lived the last years of his life. While Edward II's passions for his favorites Piers Gaveston and later Hugh DeSpenser were considered unseemly and he was widely suspected and accused of being a sodomite, the evidence is that the most likely reasons for Gaveston and later Despenser's downfall and executions were not Edward II's private sexual preferences or acts with them but the undoubted excesses and abuses of power committed by the favorites. That Edward II likely preferred men as sexual partners to his wife the Queen Isabella who was the sister of the French King surely did not help his cause, but there would have been trouble even if this had not been believed to be the case. Despenser treated the Queen cruelly and even deprived her of custody and access to her children. Isabella's brother was then the French King and she succeeded in fleeing to Paris where opposition to her husband united around her and her secret lover Edmund Mortimer. Edward II's reign could have survived if had just done a better job of making his boyfriends steal less from his other subjects and treat his wife and the nobility with the respect to which they were entitled. Medieval people were more tolerant of what they considered sinful sexual conduct including even what they called sodomy than is commonly believed today provided some discretion was exercised. The hot poker story is definitely not true.

edward II, was def bisex.. also had various children... also this was vary complex.. hugh despecencer was a * de facto king of south wales, in all but name* a tyrant... the despencer war.,... the glamorgan war, also a famine and heavy taxes..., where a welsh lord * llewellyn bren of senghenydd , was brutally executed without trail, this led to a welsh rebellion against english occupation, directly at hugh despencer and his despised family...and even supported by some de clare and other norman familes... little too do with sexuality, more to do with edward II ,who was not the eldest male, prince alfonso was... and the story of speaking welsh and becoming prince of wales,....is a total joke, but sounds great... even given him the name *edward of caernarvon*,..... also queen consort isabella, was deeply unpopular , in france....her family had a sex scandal.., then entered into a laison with roger mortimer, the 1st earl of the welsh marches..borderlands...who just happened to be great grandson of PRINCE LLEWELLYN of wales..., also biggest enemy and rival to the DESPENCER DYNASTY,,, as lords of glamorgan, and held large estates across south wales,....including the mighty de clare dynasty : CAERPHILLY CASTLE..., some historians, would argue, that is was events in wales... that actually led to EDWARD II, eventually being captured and deposed... as for the berkley family of berkley castle,,, probably every tour mentions,.... the *legend of the red poker* maybe a device by the church to discourage homosexuality during that period, in unison with queen isabella & mortimer deposing of a anointed and crowned king... who eventually either lost the confidence of his own barons or his own wife., later the barons and people,. lost confidence in the regency of queen dowager isabella capet and roger mortimer..etc what do you do with a DEPOSED KING? his maintance needs to be paid, but acording to laws of the church ,state...he is still the king, queen isabella mentioned that him leaving to wales, ireland was leaving england...abdicated the throne etc

He is one of our greatest monarchs despite his short reign but there really is not a lot about him, just the same old stuff mixed with a bit of Shakespeares version of him. It would be great if you could make a video on him and bring him to life like in other videos, I’ve only seen one channel try to create his face but they missed his most interesting feature, the scar on his face from an arrow! Great video! I’m looking forward to watching more of your content as I’ve just found your channel and subscribed!
