ATSC 3.0 is dead. They are killing it with DRM and encryption that just hurts consumers.

Unfortunately, yes.

@@danield4559explain. why do you think that? DRM is not new and has been around for decades already. it doesn't make sense to exclude everyone who has got an ATSC 3.0 TV just to apply DRM are already "FREE" OTA TV. Plus, most TV's are SMART TVs. And as a software engineer who has also played around with Tizen and WebOS Apps (Samsung and LG), the TV manufacturers could easily just use the ATSC band as "data" and the Smart-TV could have new firmware to fetch the DRM license and decrypt the stream.

You missed some crucial key points that are causing ATSC 3.0 to currently fail with consumers (and hopefully the FCC): The main one is DRM (digital rights management or in layman's terms, encryption). The broadcasters want to "protect their content" which also happens to make what you can do legally today with ATSC 1.0 signals very difficult if not impossible. This is billed as a side benefit as opposed to the intent. Features like DVR, watching across multiple devices via streaming within your home, etc. Another key point causing it to fail is the dependence on the internet. DRM encryption keys are sent via the internet. Think about that, OTA free TV now requires a paid internet service that is supplied by the TV manufacturer. What happens if they go out of business? Or you don't have/want internet? Or if the internet is down and you still want to receive the emergency broadcast signal which is one of the purposes of free OTA tv? I'll describe the third failure point as the broadcasters' desire for additional narcissistic-like control of recorded content. ATSC 3.0 allows broadcasters to (1) block DVRs from recording content, (2) expire already recorded content, and (3) watch recorded content only on the device that recorded it.... among other limitations baked in. If they dropped all three of these items out of the specification, they would be able to drop the money making ATSC 3.0 certification program that suppliers have to go through, and ATSC 3.0 would truly be the next generation of (ATSC 1.0) TV and a much improved version at that! Then they could tackle the real issue, which the government solved for them in the transition to ATSC 1.0, namely, how to transition from ATSC 1.0 to ATSC 3.0. You'll hear that from the broadcasters today as the big holdup...."we need a date when we can shutdown ATSC 1.0" - broadcasters. Consumers though, and the FCC hopefully when they look at it seriously, will focus on the three points mentioned above before discussing a rollout. The other option is the free airwaves (OTA) could be taken from the broadcasters...but that's a whole other story. BTW @02:42 - some of these receivers do not connect directly to TVs as you mention (and imply by the diagram), they are gateway devices and thus the DRM issue is a blocker as broadcasters (aka A3SA) don't support it other than a few lip-service comments about that coming in the future.

Antenna Man Tyler already said this stuff is locked with DRM and will lock out specific devices out, which means it will be priced high😑

Are there any currently available ATSC3/NextGenTV channels today and more importantly, if so, are there any who do so in 4K or to the capabilities of ATSC 3.0?

Dont mind me, I'm waiting for a response to this.

ATSC 3.0/NextGenTV channels - yes, there are plenty. There are websites that list them for your area. Any that broadcast in 4K - no, there aren't any I'm aware of...the broadcasters use the excuse that they have to simulcast the ATSC 1.0 signal which means they all share a "lighthouse" broadcast tower and thus there's not enough bandwidth to broadcast 4K....what they really mean IMHO is that they want to shutdown ATSC 1.0 so that ATSC 3.0 with DRM and DVR control will be out there so that they can control/protect the content they broadcast ... but that's a longer story and not what you asked. As "to the capabilities of ATSC 3.0" - yes there are some great advantages that are already out there and in use. (1) 1080p signals are better than anything ATSC 1.0, and (2) transmission benefits of ATSC 3.0 with regards to multipath interference means many can capture a cleaner signal from much further away from the tower.

You have to buy a 3.0 TV or buy a 3.0 converter box ( like we did to get the new digital signal to use on our old tube TV). F that.

0:07 “no Internet connection” well with DRM air you don’t have that and knock on wood Mickey Mouse (the owner of 6ABC) doesn’t get money hungry, then you also get no 6ABC if you don’t have some extra clunky boxes you thought you didn’t need.

With a new atsc 3.0 tv such as the hisense u8n do you still need to buy an antenna? Or is the tv both antenna and reciever

You always need an antenna. What kind and how large depends on where you live.

ATSC 3.0 is an intentional attempt by local providers to make over-the-air tv too expensive and encrypted so they can force all of us to access their local channel content exclusively on cable. Local providers are making a fortune selling their content to cable. They feel that OTA is depriving them of even more income. They haven't been able to end OAT, so this is the next best thing.

You make it sound simple, but you left out a lot of information like how many of the stations around the country are now 'encrypting' their OTA ATSC 3.0 broadcasts, resulting in some 'NEXTGEN' TVs being unable to display the signals. The 'NEXTGEN' TV tuners in some TVs, usually high-end models, have these tuners, and there are a few external 'NEXTGEN' tuner boxes you can add to your TV, but they require an internet connection so they can validate the 'security certificate' built into the tuner, so the signal can be decoded allowing you to watch the the ATSC 3.0 signal. Currently the are no known stations actually broadcasting any 4K video over ATSC 3.0, and ATSC 3.0 is actually a send only signal. For the two-way or interaction capabilities, the TVs or external tuner boxes will need an internet connection. As of now, there is no way to record any of the 'encrypted' ATSC 3.0 programming like there is today with ATSC 1.0 broadcasts.
