6AD1 struggles through the Wirrappa S Curve: Trains on the Trans Australian Railway #8

The Trans Australian Railway is one of the most important railways in Australia! In this 8th edition of Trains on the Trans Australian Railway a rare locomotive of 8222 features at Ooldea, an overweight 6AD1 struggles to climb Wirrappa and SCT Freight 5MP9 with LDP001 is seen at Yorkey Crossing.
SCT Freight 5MP9 crosses the bridge at Yorkey Crossing with the beautiful Flinders Rangers in the background. The train is hauled by LDP001 & SCT008 on Friday the 14th of September 2018. LDP001 is now one of two LDPs still under hire from SCT.(00:35)
GWA Double Stacked Super freighter 6AD1 struggles up the 1 in 100 grade at the Wirrappa S Curve with GWU002/ALF20 and more than 4000 tons in behind on Saturday the 15th of September 2018. (04:00)
GWA Intermodal 6AD1 is seen again approaching Pimba at the top of the hill. (05:30)
Pacific National Freight 5PM5 departs Pimba with NR89/NR77 after crossing GWA Freight 6AD1 on Saturday the 15th of September 2018. (08:22)
GWA Intermodal 6AD1 passes the old Tarcoola Railway Station with GWU002/ALF20 on Saturday the 15th of September 2018. This clips shows the old ticket office and poster board. (12:30)
Pacific National Intermodal 6SP7 crosses PN Freight 6PM6 at Ooldea very early in the morning on Sunday the 15th of September 2018. 6SP7 is hauled by NR32/NR107 with 8222 along for the ride to Kalgoorlie WA. (13:20)

What's with the old passenger car between the locomotives and the freight cars?

What do they carry in the gas containers seen near the beginning of the trains? One of them had 3 gas containers on it the one in the center was more spherical in shape than the rest. Do they get much in the way of passengers in the passenger cars, when they are in the consist?

The tanktainers are for fuel for the locos so that the train can travel Adelaide - Darwin or Adelaide - Perth without refuelling. The passenger cars are for the train crews to rest between shifts as SCT and GWA don't have crew facilities en route. Pacific National has crew facilities at Cook in the middle of the Nullabor to refuel their trains and the Indian Pacific as they pass through. Fuel for the locos and water for the Indian Pacific is brought in by tanker train from Kalgoorlie.
