If Paul Rennick has done anything for modern drumcorps he's made having good timing a thing again. All I hear here are kids who feel the time the same way and interpret it the same. Big spaces between the notes are so nice to hear. So much like what Tom Hannum did for Star in the early 90's.

Daylight between the notes is so refreshing to hear. In today's lines with everyone sounding the same (as in licks-patterns-etc.) SCV is a breath of fresh air year after year. The interplay between sections is crazy. When I marched there were lots of unison figures between sections although it did take chops to play what we played cleanly on mylar heads. I applaud today's DCI lines and love keeping up with the licks and the techniques. Thanks fort sharing.

Yeah, but specifically comparing this book to previous years, this book isn't quite as challenge. I can play and clean (for the most part) any section of the music from their book this year, but I just tried picking up their 2016 book and it almost doesn't compare chops-wise. Performance-wise obviously it does, but you get what I mean.

Eighth notes and quarter notes are lowkey some of the hardest rhythms to play perfectly clean cause they’re so easy to overlook or rush through or change your tempo and timing in. The most frustrating part about watching SCV perform is how little love their drumline gets during an actual show. Basses do a 10 second solo with insane splits, nobody bats an eye. Maybe the music is just way too crazy that people don’t know how to react ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The way a lot of SCV stuff is written, the drum breaks dont feel as hype as other lines because they fit in better contextually. They'll never be as hype as like a BD drum break which is much more stylistically unique to the rest of the show. Especially if you just compare Vanguards front ensemble to the drumline, they feel like they're written as one idea instead of being seperate parts. I love both corps, dont get me wrong, but vanguard percussion feels more musical and less hype.

While we know that Vanguard doesn't really care about visual uniformity of technique that much in the snareline, why does it look like the three consecutive snare drummers on the center's right aren't making an effort to apply the same pulse accent tap to the singles at the end of the snare break while everyone else is? I notice snares get away with stuff like this as in 2014 with the alternating flam-flams at the end of the percussion feature, most of the snares couldn't pull the heights off in a way to make it appear as clean alternating flams. At the end of the day they sounded clean because they pulled off the flam sound together, but most did not physically pull off alternating flams like the center did. I've always been curious to know if judges notice things like that or if it's so minor that's it's not worth factoring in as long as it's clean to listen to.

Most years BD has difficult content that takes all the way up to finals to clean. Many judges early season will say things on tapes to the effect of "Man, really cool stuff! Definitely a contender...once it's clean." Especially this year, they were playing some really demanding material, and if it was clean finals night, most judges would put them up. Look at multiple recaps from earlier and you'll consistently see BD having higher content scores but lower achievement scores (Clarity) It wasn't just randomly at the end, but most of the season SCV was def cleaner. SCV's front was absolutely insane too, that really did it for them tbh

Question.... The exercise they do at the 2:50 mark is clean. However, if you look all down the line and even with tenors their legs are all over the place. If it's so hard to mark time to certain rythyms/warm ups then why doesn't either the staff correct it, or they just stop? I'm not trying to attack anyone, and I see it with other lines too. Blue devils was all over the place in one of their videos from this year. Again, no shade thrown, just asking....
@skeletizer2 жыл бұрын
I know I'm late, but the way Paul teaches (at least from what I've seen/heard), he doesn't care too much about individual playing technique as long as the sound quality matches, so I assume that extends to marking time. It seems like everyone uses different parts of their feet to feel the beat, but when they do hit it's together on impact, just not visually.

Ben Brandhorst BD is the example of class in this activity. If someone is rubbed the wrong way by them, that is the individuals fault. Likely because they tired of BD winning.

Instead of shitting on BD look at why they do what they do and why they have 19 titles then look at your corps and you'll see that BD has a culture like no other that quite literally breeds perfection. I have mad respect for all drum corps but dont shit on then for their hard work

I like their beats I just don't like the drums they use. More specifically the older style of harnesses it sounds pretty good.
@TopDrumCorps4 жыл бұрын
Why don’t u like their drums? Also dynasty builds the harnesses like that because their is less parts and they don’t really ever loose bolts or break harnesses like Yamaha carriers
@saltydalty76654 жыл бұрын
@@TopDrumCorps I just don't really like how the harnesses look. I've heard that dynasty drums are heavier than most drums and it would be cool if they had two spock's on the tenors.

My _goodness_ they sound good, but the beauty of drumline isn't just in the quality of sound; it's also in the quality of the visual. Sound and sight _together._ I _REALLY_ want those snares to be aesthetically lined up vertically. Yeah, I get each playing-surface is nicely proportionate to each the player's natural playing-positions, but I don't care. It can be done. Check out my 2002 Cadets snareline. (I was the timpanist.) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHSwnZKOp6yciqM Look at Tiny Heidi here standing next to Tall Paul. Their drum-heights are _precisely_ the same measurement to the ground. I watched Heidi's face when the snare tech jacked up her drum. She did _NOT_ like it, but _whatever;_ together as a line, it looks super handsome. Plus, watching her play here, it doesn't look like she's having _too_ difficult a time ramming out the book that went on to win the 2002 High Percussion Award. Even with a jacked-up playing surface, I'd say she was just fine. _Also_ look at Tall Paul's playing surface; his a bit on the _low_ side. They compensated. Paul doesn't look like he's having too difficult a time either ramming out the same book. _It can be done._ Psychologically, sitting in front of a drumline that _looks_ good is just a better experience than sitting in front of a drumline that looks like a collection of broken pistons. (Though you might say, "But this SCV line is cleaner than that 2002 Cadets line, so maybe individual playing-surface-comfortability contributes to a cleaner sound." Mmmm.....I think each of these SCV drummers is so _ludicrously talented_ that having their playing-surface be adjusted a little higher or lower wouldn't phase them one bit. It didn't for Heidi and Paul 😉 )

@@MeowfaceMusic the height of the playing surface would absolutely dictate their sound quality. “They are talented so they can play on a higher or lower than natural surface” is one of the most vague things Iver ever heard. If you knew anything about how Paul teaches you wouldn’t have said that
