I believe that the gear set, or rear planet in 6L80/90 is called a Ravigneaux gear set. The 350, 400, 700R4 and all other Hydromatic transmissions, except Powerglide , which also uses the Ravigneaux ,use the Simpson gear set. I went to technical school way back in 1981, so I remember all those terms, the instructor pounded them into your brain

Yep, absolutely correct Peter...Ford and ZF took things a step further with the Lepelletier planetary system which connected a Simpson gear set to a Ravigneax gear set but these units keep the Simpson set divorced from the Ravigneaux.

Another great video, thanks Nick. Information on the gloves. How do you like them?
@nickstransmissionsАй бұрын
Thanks for the kind words, John! I like those gloves...gives you just enough dexterity while letting you do everything from tearing a transmission down to handling / moving things without tearing your latex gloves....Harbor Freight sells them for $2/pair...They also sell those black latex 9mil thick gloves - they're ok but like to tear between the thumb and index finger, especially in the summer....Hot months I actually wear the 5mil gloves that don't split as much in that area when it's hot.

You can use the 6l90 6 pinion planet in the 6l80..🎉😎👊🏻 it replaces the 4 pinion planet in the 6l80...

Yep, those are interchangeable..Thanks for watching, Dale!

if any of the solenoids fail can they be replaced individually or do you have to buy an all new tehcm?
@nickstransmissions22 күн бұрын
Unfortunately, no...You have to replace the entire TEHCM. The only thing you can do maintenance-wise is replace the pressure switch seals, diaphragms and TEHCM filter screen.

@nickstransmissions ok great info thank you very much. Sometimes mine won't shift from second to third. But then other times it drives fine. Do you know what that could be?
@nickstransmissions21 күн бұрын
If it's not upshifting at all from 2nd to 3rd, it's most likely TEHCM...Drop the pan and ohm out the variable force solenoids to see if any test bad...check out my short video for a quick 'how-to', if you haven't done it before: kzbin.infoUUiwZuR8lEw?feature=share

@@nickstransmissions Yeah it shifts normal sometimes and sometimes it won't shift out of 2nd or 3rd so I have to pull over, turn it off and back on and it shifts fine again. Can I test it while it's still in the vehicle or should I remove it? I did watch your vid on how to test it and I'm sure I'll be viewing like 10 more times while I test it. lol could it be the pressure switch seals? there are no codes.
@nickstransmissions20 күн бұрын
You can test the variable force solenoids with the TEHCM bolted to the valve body however if you need/want to test the pressure switches, it has to come out...You can also test for mechanical function if you have the Bosch TEHCM test block kit (most DYIers won't have this kit given it's cost and relative scarcity/availability).
