@arcanus51202 ай бұрын
DJ is what the Pels needed, if they were not so injured it would look like a Hawks favored, but good trade imo. Pels were in the extremely privileged position to have both Herb and Dyson. Prior to this season, if you were to make a bet on one if you wanted to contend right away, you go with Herb. All that being said, when you consider the two picks.... well.... yeah, Hawks won the trade easily. When the Pels are not down 10 players I'm willing to bet they will be a force in the west as well tho. Next year the Pels should be crazy with a healthy and gelled squad.

As a Pelicans fan, I was sad to see Dyson go. I thought he was a young player worth investing in. Wish the Hawks had taken Ingram instead! I could see his potential fit with the Hawks as soon as they trade was made though. His time in New Orleans reminded me a lot of Lonzo Ball - good defender, excellent connector with his passing, iffy three point shot, reluctance to finish through contact. Judging by the number of floater highlights in the video, it seems he still doesn't like attempting layups unless he has a clear path to the basket. Maybe Daniels has levelled up his game this season, but he was only the second best defender on the Pelicans. Because while Dyson and Herb Jones were pretty even as on-ball defenders, Herb Jones was outstanding as on off-ball defender as well, and was one of the principal reasons the Pelicans had a good defence the past couple of years.
@arcanus51202 ай бұрын
Yeah, pretty sure the Hawks wanted either Herb or Dyson. I remember around the trade deadline that we asked for Herb for DJ and ya'll said no. BI is a great player but Hawks were hesitant after the DJ trade from the Spurs fucked them on backcourt fit for two years. Paying BI would have been hard for us too I think. Made more sense to take a swing on a younger guy we liked like Dyson, Nance as a vet, and two picks that are likely not to be lottery. This vid definitely gets wrong that Dyson's offense has always been there, dude has clearly been in the gym working on it. That being said, Quin "Shoot the fucking ball" Snyder, will not take him out if the shot is not going it. He does way too much for us defensively to justify that, and he makes people shoot regardless. Look at Onyeka and Jalen, those guys shoot the three way better under Quin then they would have under different coaches. Quin will let you miss 4 so you can see 1 go in if it means next game you miss 3 to see 2 go in. Clearly that sort of system with more wiggle room in the East compared to the West helps a lot. Hawks are 6-7, and are the 5 seed. Would be 10 or 11 in the west.
@Beanskiiii2 ай бұрын
He's this good defensively because he's very intelligent. Intelligence is why Jokic and Doncic are the two best players in the league, and Bron still ballin at 40. Hawks' front office are geniuses, but then again, Atlanta is the home of finessin and scammin lol

Very reactive take, imo gonna age poorlyzx For one, he's a disciple of Herb Jones. Why do people think the pels didn't know his value? He had advanced stats in most metrics last season and managed to lead the nba in deflections for much of the season on smaller volume, essentially a similar rate to this season. He was not afraid of mistakes last year, and is incredibly smart in transition especially. Our offense stagnating hurt him often, and with amore reliably operating scheme especially in the East where only 4 teams sit above .500 and less physicality to contend with. Coupled with a bit more mass on his frame, this is what I expected. In fact, Im kinda disappointed the Hawks aren't increasing his ball handling duties at this point. His only stat that's improved significantly defensively is steal rate, and he has been asked to prioritize that over defensive rebounding or passing in the half-court. With herb in Nola coming off a career year and still a year ahead of Dyson at least (assuming their potential is comparable) Dyson's injury problems (smaller than a good few pels sadly) and the obvious need for starting minutes to take the next step, we leveraged him for a player who in one game (w/ a broken finger nearly half) was able to get 14/8/10 while shooting poorly, and still offered more stability than any other ball handler we have. I always saw this as a win-win trade as long as Dyson reached his potential (on track other than developing PG skills) and injuries didn't impact the long term viability of Dejounte or Dyson (as of yet no serious concern for either, but remains to be seen), and nothing is surprising anyone in New Orleans other than the good timing for Trey to get injured for Dyson's growth. Remember Herb has done this for a few seasons and as your name gets known the more you inevitably become part of the gameplan for the opposition. Look up herb highlights from 21-22 doing things like neutralizing Jokic, Doncic, LeBron, etc both as an on ball defender and helping with his versatility switching. In New Orleans, many players credit this young man for changing their defensive effort and improving their results including Murray, Zion, Jose, Naji Marshall, BI, CJ (less impactfully), and especially Dyson Daniels. Not to disct=reditate his natural ability, which is ridiculous much of the time or the work of Willy Green and other staff (I wish he wasn't head coach. Really seems like he can develop players to a high level (especially on defense) as well as identify (w/ the FO) prospects with good defensive mentalities and skills that will translate to the nba. In Clippers reject Brandon Boston Jr (someone without much game time after 3 years at LAC to prove himself), we already have a new guard who, although not to level of Dyson or herb defensively, is a better shooter from 3 and mid range, may have Dyson beat on the floater, and Is far from a slouch defensively. Imo, he \ may be a better player than Jose already who the Clippers, like most, wouldn't have developed to this exctent. Now we just need to have depth because the other options to replace Zion CJ, Hawkins, Murray, Alvarado, and Herb are not as convincing
@jackstern57372 ай бұрын
He also has a tendency to play a riskier style than Herb on defense (similarly to Jose Alvarado), which inevitably leads to some insane stats, as it did in Nola last season too. Can we start actually taking note at New Orleans for the talent we identify and polish? Herbs had the same defensive stats for 3 season essentially, but it took a scoring streak to get he media to end up 3rd in DPOY voting. NOBODY FLEECED ANYBODY, he wouldn't be this in New Orleans unless we knew about the injuries of 6 players in the front court when deciding to trade for Murray. Murray has been great and led the league (or 2nd. Him and herb were #1 & #2 in steals last season) while not focusing on defense much, frustrated with the Hawks organization, and more. Herb is still better. And although I hope Im wrong in my implication for this season, Dyson has missed 1/4 of each season since he started to actually play the nba, and for those 2 seasons, DJM has been available more than Dyson has. On paper everything still makes complete sense. Also, how you gonna disrepesect Murray like that??? Fleeced is for attention here, and does not describe the situation but rather a hyperbolic perspective that this creator has adopted (possibly unwittingly) to perform better in the algorithm while Dyson's name is hot. Seen this before, w/ Herbert Keyshawn Jones!
