Hope to see more testing with the CX. I would like to see 6.5mm 120gr. & 130gr.

Great video. What powder were you using behind the CX pill. I'm gonna try the new 90g CX with 0.418 BC. That beats the TTSX BC.

Published ballistic coefficients are useful only as a rough estimate. My experience is that more recent published bc’s are about 10-20% optimistic and in general are most valuable for comparing bc’s within one manufacturer’s line. If you put your chronograph at 200 or 300 yards I would expect the Barnes is going slower than you think as they tend to be more on the optimistic side. If you look at the bc’s they used to publish in their first couple reloading manuals before anyone could call b.s. on their figures on social media you’ll get a good laugh. I forget what edition had the reset but their bc’s dropped by something like 30-40% between printings. You can also use JBM to true your results. Zero at 100, record your actual drops without going trans sonic, enter your conditions into JBM and then adjust the calculated bc till it matches the actual drops. This will give you a much more accurate velocity estimate at range.

In other CX testing at more typical 2750-3000fps speeds it appears to fragment more easily, which I don't like, but I definitely like the better expansion seen at lower velocities (maybe a double edged sword). Whereas the Barnes TTSX doesn't ever seem to fragment, but expansion will suffer down towards the 1800-2000fps velocity mark or lower.

Thanks for this and the other tests. Excellent information. Is it correct that the CX is more pure copper than the previous GMX gilding metal bullets and therefore expands more easily at lower impact velocities?
@frontlinerejects8029
@frontlinerejects8029 2 жыл бұрын
I know they changed the alloy, and my guess is it's closer to pure copper than the GMX was - but I have no concrete info on that. Thank for commenting!

I hope to see testing with 6.5 Grendel loads with the 120 CX. I’m very curious how it expands with higher BC but lower velocities of the Grendel. I just got my own 6.5 CX bullets and I’m hoping to work up a load later in the future

We don't have a Grendel, and I don't know if we will anytime soon but we will be testing the CX in our Creedmoor.

Really loving the info in your videos. One suggestion: I would love to see you repeat this one and the other 6mm tests using a 243 Win, or 6mm Rem, or 6mm CM. As you know, the velocities of the 6mm ARC is almost 400 fps slower than any of the previously mentioned cartridges. For example both of my 243s spit out the 85g Barnes TTSX at 3200+ fps with no signs of pressure. The 243 Win, 6mm Rem, and 6mm CM are much more commonly shot than the ARC and an expansion test at those velocities would be much more meaningful to your subscribers IMO. In closing, let me say that you guys are quickly becoming one of my favorite KZbin channels. Please keep up the great work.

This was just the sort of test I was looking for about the 6mm CX projectiles and even better with you having to do the barnes test as well. If you can get them it work be worth trying the GS Custom projectiles out of South Africa, their 69gr ones are well worth it but pricey.

Very useful information for those of us who don't shoot the hypervelocity cartridges. I'm still worried though with my 7mm-08 and velocities I usually attain but if it works with 6mmARC it might be fine in 7mm-08.

I think if you were to run the 139 grain offering with around a max charge of IMR-4896, Varget, RL 19, or Big Game - you'd be more than fine at 400 and in.

What up guys. So as far as I know Hornady copper bullets are not entirely copper. So as far as I know according to Hornady the bullet is a Guilding metal bullet and it is made up of approximately 5% Nickel and 95% Copper. Now that is just an estimate, the exact formula for both the CX bullets and the GMX Copper ammunition is a Guilding metal monolithic. So not entirely 100 percent Copper but not enough Zink to make it brass. I believe the reason why is brass ammunition is strictly built for military use only since the government sees brass as brass having penetrating capabilities and the government doesn't want us to have brass ammunition in all calibers mostly like 9mm 45ACP 223, and 308. Although there is brass ammunition, as far as I know it is used in dangerous game hunting in larger calibers from one offering of brass extreme cavitation and up, nothing below 30 caliber rifle ammunition. So if there is too much nickel in copper it will become brass and according to our lovely America, civilians are not allowed brass ammunition in our urban lives only in dangerous game situations with large big bore caliber guns that are too dam heavy to carry around anywhere. That's just as far as I know. I could be wrong, but notice the difference between all the Copper amunition and you will find that all Copper bullets are really tough but the Hornady CX and GMX actually expand even out to longer ranges just a little bit better. When the speed is just right, the Hornady CX and GMX are the only monolithic bullets to have a frangible affect at high velocities. Compare same velocity to a barns bullet and a CX both same speeds. 3500 out the muzzle, you will see more fragmentation from Hornady, Barns bullets will stays together normally not shedding the peddles. Great video!! Awesome content!!

The reason you had issues with the 110 CX is because this bullet was designed for LOW velocities of the 300 BLK

Great video. The Backfire channel had an interview today with a guy from Hornady. He explained that monolithic bullets weren't really designed for long range hunting. Having said that, I think that this one performed outstanding.

I'll have to check that out, Hornady has a great video devoted to the CX on their KZbin channel where they do mention that a large part of the CX's design criteria was centered around extending the range shooters could use a monolithic at - thanks for your support!
