Hot... are not only the temperatures in California's Mojave Desert, but also the rails of the BNSF Southern Transcon. The Needles Subdivision, which is featured in this video, sees among the heaviest railroad traffic in the entire US. More than 70 trains traverse the desert and mountains on this section of the southern transcontinental railroad. We follow this line westward from Needles, CA to Barstow, CA, 167 track miles. Enjoy!

I love It when you come west.. Big trains, long trains and lots of Horse Power. Plus I love the desert, when I was a young buck I use to race in the desert and especially the Barstow to Vegas race. So good on ya that you show us lonesome train lovers in Southern Cal some of the good stuff.

Great you enjoyed it! I'm happy I finally managed to do the SoCal railfanning trip, which had been on my list for a long time. There's a lot more video that still needs to be produced. It was a great excursion!

I must admit I never tire from watching the monumental amounts of HP running the sheer volumes of stock across the US. Fantastic video

It can be somewhat annoying if the trains are very slow and it takes 10 minutes for them to pass by, but some of the very long trains are amazing and one keeps wondering how this works, particularly in the mountains.

mbmars01 One of the roads I take can take up to 15 mins for a 100 wagon coal train to run through as it’s uphill and they get down to about 30km/h

When there are helpers in mid-train or at the rear, does the crew at the front have any notification of what the other engines are doing? If for instance, one caught fire, would they have any indication of it? Do they know whether they're all delivering power?
@mbmars01

The DPUs are controlled by radio and I'm sure there's a data link back to the head unit, so that the engineer gets notice of any irregularity immediately.
