Hey Phil - have you reached out via FB? Haven't seen anything so just making sure I didn't overlook it...

I got a pile of these valve bodies I've started going through. I see the same wear on pretty much all of them, A, D1/E and pressure regulator valve. I've got a few with excessive bypass control valve wear, but for the most part they all vac the same. Very similar to yours. It's a shame, valve bodies used to be cheap for these then when lead frames were unavailable the price doubled.
@nickstransmissions6 ай бұрын
Yep, they are wear in the same spots...In fact the all three of the six-speed variants, GM, Ford and ZF are largely all the same in terms of what goes wrong and how you build them. GM is a little different than the other two, owing to the massive engineering changes they made to the base ZF design but I rebuild every one of those transmissions exactly the same way...Only real difference is when high performance or extreme duty is the application, I start adding billet parts.... Thanks for watching, Rob!

Where can I find the solenoid ID number on the valvebody if it doesn’t have the tag
@nickstransmissions2 ай бұрын
Hi Justin, contact the dealership and provide the last 8 digits of the VIN. They will tell you what sol strategy is applicable to your vehicle as well as sell you the correct solenoid set or an individual solenoid, if that's what you need. Thanks for watching.

Incredible content - thank you. There is such a lack of 6r80 rebuild content. I just rebuilt my 6r80 valve body and assembled the valves wet with trans fluid. Can I test the halves if the valves are wet with fluid? Will it give an artificially false high vacuum reading?
@nickstransmissions6 ай бұрын
Thank you for the kind words, Tim! Yes, you can test it as-is since you assemebled with fresh trans fluid. While your readings may be slightly high relative to what they would be dry, I dont think it would make a material difference...

Hello @nickstransmission , I’ve recently purchased a 2012 f150 with a 6r80 and noticed that the 3-4 shift and the 5-4 shift are a little bit stiffer than any of the other shifts. I can definitely feel the other shifts but the 3-4 and 4-3 are a little stiffer than I would assume is normal. Do you think that could be a problem with the solenoids? or maybe I’m just paranoid because it’s a new truck lol
@nickstransmissionsАй бұрын
Hi Alley, thanks for watching...It's hard to say to be honest, at least from here...Put a bidirectional scanner on it and see what's happening with the transmission and torque converter...Those transmissions have issues with the direct and OD clutch packs so could be the beginnings of clutch pack failure but that's just speculation without more data/information. You can continuity-test your solenoids to see if any of them are reading out of spec; if so and you replace, make sure you get the correct band and frequency range (if band #4 solenoids are being replaced)...Look at the color of the snout and that will tell you whether it's a high band or low band solenoid. You can install the Sonnax Zip kit to see if that helps (it can't hurt and should be installed on all these units, to be honest) - follow my video instructions for the installation (I cover the Zip kit in Part 2 of this 6R80 valve body video series - you can find it in my 6R80 playlist)
@alleyj6180Ай бұрын
@ thanks for the quick reply, sonnax zip kit sounds like a good idea I’ve done one before to a Toyota Tacoma and it worked out pretty well. Would there be any reason in maybe preventatively replacing the solenoids or does that seem overkill?

This may be a shot in the dark, but will a 2015 6r80 valve body and solenoid pack work on a 2014 6r80 case? Reason I ask, the 14 and 15 solenoid strategies are different. I’ve got a coyote swapped car with a gen 2 computer and gen 1 transmission. I need to get a gen 2 solenoid set in there.
@nickstransmissions5 ай бұрын
That's a good question - I've never tried to do it so can't say for sure. The main difference between the 2014 and 2015 valve bodies is the changes tied to the 'start-stop' technology. The lead frames are the same and I would think you can determine what solenoid strategy would be applicable via scanning the computer to obtain the solenoid strategy code. Once you have that, you should be able to purchase solenoids corresponding to the correct solenoids for the computer's stored strategy. Alternatively, you may be able to reprogram the PCM but speculation on my part since it's well outside my area of expertise.

@@nickstransmissions Thank you for the response, and the great information. I used Forscan and programmed my current (2014) solenoid strategy in to my computer (2015) and the transmission quit shifting. Programmed a 2015 strategy in there and it worked again, but is not ideal because it doesn’t match the solenoids in the transmission. I may have to buy a set of 2015 solenoids and lead frame to swap in and program that. I just didn’t know if the 2015 valve body had different passages compared to the 2014.
@nickstransmissions4 ай бұрын
The 2015 valve body does have different passages, specifically a large circular cut out to work with the start-stop tech that Ford introduced in 2015 so it may or may not work on a 2014 case.
@MRLWARRIOR10163 ай бұрын
@@nickstransmissions I just wanted to give an update here, and pass on some extra information. 2015 was the start of the gen 2 valve body, start and stop was an option. Not all gen 2 valve bodies have start stop. If you have a late gen 1 case (2013-2014), a 2015-2017 valve body that does not have start/stop will work on the gen 1 case. I did this swap last night. The Gen 2 valve body has an extra bolt hole compared to gen 1, but that is not an issue.

Ford has recalled all of the 10 speed problematic, transmissions or vehicles should I say with that transmission

Interesting...I don't know much about the GM or Ford 10-speeds as I haven't had one come through the shop yet but from I've been reading (mostly on forums) that the GM variants are fairly reliable compared to the 8 speeds...
@larryschaum62806 ай бұрын
GM and Ford 10 speeds are basically the same. It was designed in a joint venture between Ford and GM. Same as the 6 speeds. Both front wheel and rear wheel drive. The 10 speeds from GM make noise from the pump gears. They are helical cut. Fords are straight cut. Fords are not making the noise. The fix for that is put the ford gears, on the GM version. Good article on that in June 2024 Gears magazine. Nick, another excellent video. Can’t wait for the rest of the Valve body video.

Good information, thanks Larry! I haven't seen any 10-speeds just yet but hoping one comes my way at some point soon so I can do some vids on it. Same with the 8-speeds....Have never touched one (GM, Ford or ZF).
