Hitler looking at his map and my wife looking at our debit card can only result in the same thing... disaster.

Those 5000 POW's didn't return right after the war. It took 10 years, 1955, for that small remnant of 6th Army to return home.

and only because the German government begged the USSR to return them.

I think only around 5k made it back home, half the 90k who surrenderd died on the march to the gulags.

Italian Army held the front line next to the Romanian Army, on the west . It consisted of elite Alpine divisions fit to fight on the cold weather, trained and raised on the Italian Alps . They had front fortified with the bunkers and minefields. It's just the defending space was too big with lots of uncovered space. Italian Army on the East from CSIR to ARMIR. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_Army_in_Russia

There’s also the matter of, I believe, the 2nd Guards Army that completely stops the operation before the Panzer Army gets there. Plus, there’s also the fact that the 6th Army, by all accounts, was way too weak to be able to affect the breakout even if the opportunity had come about.

The italians were the worst allies of the germans and not worth much.

Unfortunately that is true but like with everything there is context, Italy wasn't ready for the war, with a too small industrial base, but to be fair there were cases of great valour among the Italians in spite of general poor leadership!

@@janmale7767 Because of the italians, the germans had to send troups to africa, which got lost because the italians were responsible for the suply which they could not full fill and maybe other reasons. Overall, the whole theater in Africa was useless and only happened because of the italians. In Greece, the germans had to help the italians again and lost a huge amount of paratroopers in Kreta, also because of the involvement in Greece, A.H. postponed the attack on the sovjet union, which most likely cost them the reach of moscu before the winter. You are right that it was mainly the italian leadership who was too proud to coordinate their aggresion or attacks with A.H. Something similar can be said about the Japanese. If the coordination between the three Axis powers would have been better, for example, Japan would have attacked the sovjet union from the rear while germany attacked from the front, than maybe it would have been posible to take them out. Also the italian population changed sites whenever things got tough. That is something that did not happen in Germany, were the population was honorable and loyal till the last day, with the exception of a few traidors.

Remember that unlike the Allies, the Axis did not coordinate or plan strategy between themselves. The Soviets, through their spy network, knew about Japanese planst to attack Pearl Harbor before the Germans did
