This is normal. A huge amount of the sealed starters from Alpha, Beta and Unlimited stayed sealed because the first decks opened in the box had no rares. Otherwise the temptation is too great and they would have been opened 20 years ago. This is especially true for Beta, which was the hottest set in 95 when you had to play with clear back sleeves so Alpha was considered a novelty like Collectiors Edition.

Yep, this is the opposite of a "God Box" (where somehow the rare sheet got placed in the boosters as if it was a common sheet). The early Magic boxes are highly speculative for that reason, sometimes the sheets got shuffled at the factory, and you got very lucky (or very unlucky). Good advice about not buying a sealed pack unless you know what box it came from. Chances are, it was from one of these unlucky boxes that had commons/uncommons where the rares should have been, so somebody is trying to unload a worthless pack that they know has no rares. IIRC, the distribution in a booster pack of 15 cards, is supposed to be 3 uncommon, 1 rare, 11 common.

@@mapsgoonthewall5396 no, this was because back in 94/95, you couldn't play with sleeves in tournaments and then you were allowed to play with clear-back sleeves. Alphas thus were not tournament legal unless you had an all Alpha deck.

You guys make me remember opening my first 4th Edition Starter Set. Until today i can still named the card title only by looking at the illustration, no need to read the title on the left corner : Gloom, CoP White, Fog, Grizzly Bears, Hurloon Minotaur, Serra Angel, Mesa Pegasus, Disintegration, Samite Healer, Creature Bond, Spell Blast, Holy Armor, Drain Life. It was MtG on its heyday.

I don't even know what happened to my first comment on here! That was such an Epic opening. I felt so bad that the "rare" I turned over ended up like that. I just could not flip over the 2nd one after that. Open Boosters gave me the box and the instructions. I had him sign both and I even kept the blue gloves. If somebody ever discovers that box someday they are going to be pretty confused as to why blue rubber gloves are stuffed in a signed box.

When i was a kid, i remember getting a pack just like this one with a friend. I remember looking at the cards and trading. I remember the smell. Eventually i threw many of them away. That guy probably did so much damage between the spitting during his sound effects, the quick flipping of the cards while his hands are constantly jittering, and sticking that knife right into the deck when he cut the pack open. You go through the trouble of even wearing gloves--only to probably do even more damage than clean bare hands and 2 seconds of thought and care.

Brings back memories of opening revised boosters and getting a basic land as your rare card. It was always a bit of a joke getting the 'rarest land' but that was when boosters were around $4 so it wasnt quite so bad.

Only alpha and beta, BUT, there are some later starter decks that do it also... it seems like you know you have a good deck when you get one like that.... in beta and alpha though, since all of them do it, it’s not a good indicator of a “good” pack...

In 2005 I opened two sealed Alpha starter decks. In one of the starters one of the cards in the rare spot was a Island. Apparently that was a known phenomenon that occurred in Alpha at times. My hands shake like this dudes on rare occasions when I get really anxious. If anyone remembers the seller on eBay with the user id strictly-magic, that was me.

The pack was a factory error. After the cards get cut off a full sheet, common, uncommons and rares are stacked and combined before being wrapped and loaded into the boxes. The sorter hickupped and picked up commons from two different sheets and obviously two extra commons instead of the two rares. Might have happened a few times too till someone on the production line noticed the error.
