I got into Magic around 4th Edition. I have to say, the art from Tempest block until Urza's block was, for me, the absolute best. Even though today's art is cool as well, the handdrawn (non-computer, I mean) artwork back then was simply stunning. Rebecca Guay, Therese Nielsen. Masters.

Same! I bought several boxes of Tempest and Urza’s Saga back in the day, but the sets that came out after the Urza’s block were pretty lame, so I basically stopped buying and playing.

Fun story: back in the 90s i played at a game store owned by Henry G Higginbotham the artist of Voltaic Key, Cathodian, and worn powerstone. If you look at those cards carefully you can see that they aren't actually paintings but photographs of sculptures Henry created. As far as i know they are the only magic cards with photographs instead of paintings/cgi art.

@Banterbear
@Banterbear 5 жыл бұрын
There are a few reasons of it, but a lot of it is because of the move to digital. Not all the current art is awful...there some realy good pieces, and long term, traditional artists like Guay and Nielsen still turn out great stuff.
@joeybergeron7398
@joeybergeron7398 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I definitely don't think the new art is bad by any stretch, just a bit homogenized. The old art definitely has a certain grit and roughness that digital just cant replicate ya know?
@Banterbear
@Banterbear 5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. It is more natural and stylised. One of the problems with digital is simply the level of manipulation and an undo button.
@rostigerrolf4490
@rostigerrolf4490 5 жыл бұрын
I wouldnt say the art today is worse or less detailed. Its just way too generic more often than not which might be because of the way those are created nowadays. With generic I mean that there are thousands upon thousands drawings on the internet not really looking that much different. At some point you get saturated. The art back then is "flawed" in many ways but thats why its more appealing.

This is like reliving my youth. I started playing at the trail end of unlimited/ beginning of revised, stopped playing after Darksteel, then came back for a Guildpact-Lorwyn, gave it up again until this year when I saw a Warhammer 40,000 set was being made. I really miss the simplicity of the game from those really years, the game was easy to learn & you could teach someone in an afternoon. Some of the card treatments of the new sets are really cool too look at, but it truly feels like the game is far more about collectability than it's playability now. The game is so complicated it's nearly impossible to teach & it seems like we can't even play a game without pulling out the phone to check rulings on card effects. Thanks for making this channel, this is the magic i love. Although I still have most of those old cards, you're making want to go back & check out some of what I missed.

@@Scorch428 Well, the power level of this particular land cycle is insanely absurd compared to other lands. I mean u have easily power level 12/10, those lands are on the reserved list which means the will be never going to reprint those lands (+ history + time + flavour + art etc. pp). but yay in first place the absurd amount of power level + they are on the reserved list :) Which lands u got from Urzas Saga?

@@zzafrica87 Im just wondering what a buyer would do with it? It cant still be tourney legal, and its not old enough to be rare, they printed so damn many of them, so what would a buyer do with it? Just keep it and hope it goes up? I sent my 2 into a website giving me 70 each for them. i think tyer eonly 90 each so thats pretty good liquid value imo. I was just wondering what the buyers do with them? the ones that pay the full$90? any ideas?

@@Scorch428 U can actually play with em :) This land cycle is for example perfect for legacy/vintage and/or commander. I bought for example Serras Sanctum for my commander deck. Without a doubt the best enchantment related land ever printed and they will never print/create a land with such a power level :) Man I love this card, I got a japanese version in near mint to mint :D

I remember about 15 years ago, I sold all of my cards to pay for rent to get me through financially. I had 4 Time Spirals, 4 Tolarian Academy's, 2 Gaea's Cradles, and 4 Grim Monoliths.

That warehouse is *INSANE!* lol I like at 2:07 you just casually pan over TWO graded OG Lotus's, and an unlimited. You should have that place guarded like a tomb in Indiana Jones. Preassure plates, saw blades, pit vipers, etc

Awe, so nostalgic. I feel like digging out my old box of magic cards. I quit playing back in 01 or 02. I still have all my sports cards. Those are in better condition though. Haha. My MTG cards were all well loved and played.

Take note. Even if you love the channel, any, "perspiration," from his hands does not raise the value of the cards! At least not beyond sentimental value.
