I got into Magic around 4th Edition. I have to say, the art from Tempest block until Urza's block was, for me, the absolute best. Even though today's art is cool as well, the handdrawn (non-computer, I mean) artwork back then was simply stunning. Rebecca Guay, Therese Nielsen. Masters.

Fun story: back in the 90s i played at a game store owned by Henry G Higginbotham the artist of Voltaic Key, Cathodian, and worn powerstone. If you look at those cards carefully you can see that they aren't actually paintings but photographs of sculptures Henry created. As far as i know they are the only magic cards with photographs instead of paintings/cgi art.

I'll spot the young bucks that we oldies suffer from nostalgia. No denying. But the artwork cannot be denied. I sit on my singles JUST cause of the feels alone.
@Banterbear5 жыл бұрын
There are a few reasons of it, but a lot of it is because of the move to digital. Not all the current art is awful...there some realy good pieces, and long term, traditional artists like Guay and Nielsen still turn out great stuff.
@joeybergeron73985 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I definitely don't think the new art is bad by any stretch, just a bit homogenized. The old art definitely has a certain grit and roughness that digital just cant replicate ya know?
@Banterbear5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. It is more natural and stylised. One of the problems with digital is simply the level of manipulation and an undo button.
@rostigerrolf44905 жыл бұрын
I wouldnt say the art today is worse or less detailed. Its just way too generic more often than not which might be because of the way those are created nowadays. With generic I mean that there are thousands upon thousands drawings on the internet not really looking that much different. At some point you get saturated. The art back then is "flawed" in many ways but thats why its more appealing.

This is like reliving my youth. I started playing at the trail end of unlimited/ beginning of revised, stopped playing after Darksteel, then came back for a Guildpact-Lorwyn, gave it up again until this year when I saw a Warhammer 40,000 set was being made. I really miss the simplicity of the game from those really years, the game was easy to learn & you could teach someone in an afternoon. Some of the card treatments of the new sets are really cool too look at, but it truly feels like the game is far more about collectability than it's playability now. The game is so complicated it's nearly impossible to teach & it seems like we can't even play a game without pulling out the phone to check rulings on card effects. Thanks for making this channel, this is the magic i love. Although I still have most of those old cards, you're making want to go back & check out some of what I missed.

Amazing video, so many memories!!! Stopped playing in 2010 and sold all my stuff. Among them was a near mint play set of Cradles I got $140 each. Started playing again in 2016 and saw how much they had gone up. Still makes me sick to my stomach.

Thanks for the video! I used to buy so many boosters of Urza’s saga back in the day 😆 i wish i had saved some booster boxes haha. I had a gaia’s cradle too but i gave all my cards to a friend as i had no one close to play with anymore. Thanks again for the video, brings back alot of nostalgia for me!
