Who on Gods green earth would dislike this video ???? Thank you Bill for posting these types of videos 👍🏽 I know it takes a lot of time to do so. I just paid for my HPOP in my '01 to be replaced, it'd be cool to see one replaced by your staff ?? No matter what repair you choose to upload, we appreciate it and I'm sure Ron is looking down smiling, glad you're continuing to help out the PS Community 🤘🏽 Thanks again

Thanks for the video man!!! Has been super helpful fixing my 95!! So check this out i saw your video and how that snout broke off that fuel pump. Well I found if you take a chain choke dog collar and a pry bar you can pop that fuel pump right out without breaking it

This is one of the more enjoyable videos that I've seen yet dealing w/ diesels... Also, a big help, as I'm new to diesels; I have no choice but to work on them myself, as I have three now; very different than the gasoline fueled engines that I've mostly owned...

This is a great series, I have done this job on a 95 PSD I owned and recently a buddy of mine purchased an Ambu with a 97 PSD, rats chewed the wiring harness, we have systematically repaired wires except for two that are stumping us, its red an yellow coming in around the pax side of fuel bowl and the GPR, that one is stumping me? also in the front of the engine near the injection pump I have a wire coming out with a diode on it nothing matches these 2 stumpers. Getting ready to replace 2 fuel lines that where gnawed on, one completely thru that goes from the top 90 elbow on the FPR and the other going to the back of the pax rail. This ambu will be awesome with only 112k on it plus its 4wd... I love how your mentoring young Joe and mike,its the best way to learn a skill. BTW after fighting my 95 PSD I found a 89 F250 with an IDI and 50K miles on it ill never go back to a PSD just cuz of the damn sensors haha....

Great info, brutal camera work, I wish your phone number was at the top of the screen and a bit smaller. I have a E350 Club Wagon and have fuel leaks beyond the drain valve right now and dread all of this. I cannot find a single shop in Southern California with a long time Experienced mechanic to entrust my 7.3 to, so I'm always having to do everything myself. I wish I had the ability to drop the entire engine out of my "98" van and just go through everything ... once and for all... after 290,000 miles with zero breakdowns and zero issues. Fantastic engine. Thanks so much for your insightful videos, I have been a subscriber for years.

Wanna thank these guys for this video.didnt even know my truck had a mechanical fuel pump. Was leaking like crazy and figured I'd start with filter.when checking for leaks I noticed it squirting under the pump.also was leaking a bit from the seam.so on to u-tube to see WTF was going on.ran into this video and was the best I could find by far.changed it myself and it's a bitch!!!pretty much most of two days with not much for tools.that big bolt behind the pump is a fucker.i got it out but getting it back in and line up that metal gasket really sucked.i ended up crazy gluing the gasket to the back of the pump.worked great!!! I also ended up grinding the base that the turbo sits on a bit so I could get a wee bit more room.its not leaking and I'm a happy man.once again thanx to these guys and their very informative video.

I learned the flat rate procedure in Auto Mechanics Vo-Tech in 1977. It caused the school to kick me out with my handicapped left hand. They said I worked too slow to be paid by flat rate unless I was working for myself. They said my work was good quality but I just had to do the work too slowly! They even tried to make a tune-up specialist out of me & I still couldn't please them timewise.

@6point0powerstroker79
@6point0powerstroker79 4 жыл бұрын
If it's At 406k you should have someone trustworthy put a set of rings and head gaskets in it. If it has no issues other than blow by .... new rings should make it stop blow by as long as it hasn't been galled too badly by repeated driving it low on oil.... it'll get another 200k to 300k miles without issue

If anyone is doing this the best way to get fuel pump out of hole is turn motor by hand and the cam lobe will often push the pump out of the hole and with it being on top of the lobe the pump lifter cant fall. Just my $00.02

For future readers, dont use the starter to turn the motor, your batteries should be disconnected anyway. Use a 15/16" on the alternator to turn the motor. Turn it counter clockwise and it will rotate your motor.

bill you should try using latex gloves to stick over the intake plenums instead of stuffing a rag in there, i know you have good mechanics but everyone forgets stuff sometimes and they could forget the rags in there when you go to start up. a blue glove and it sticking out would be hard to miss. just passing along something i picked up over time.

I have an air intrusion that had taken my 95 7.3 off the road. I haven’t been able to find the cause i put clear line on the right side of the fuel pump and let it run and it’s got tiny bubbles, every once and a while big bubbles. On one of the lines from the fpr side is leaking which I haven’t replaced yet but I’ve deleted the selector valve cleaned the tank so nothing is clogging the pickup I looked over the pickup tube for cracking I’ve looked over all the lines o rings changed the fuel bowl because it had cracks and holes, fuel pressure regulator spring and plunger was replaced it’ll run and drive a short distance then it’ll start starving for fuel when to much load is on it. I don’t know could it be that line or could it be the lines that run the whole frame it’s a clean truck no rust other then the bed sides which was a replacement bed I want to keep the truck and have no plans on selling it but my last ditch effort was going to be an e fuel system but before that maybe y’all could answer my questions. I’ve been a gas truck guy and my dream truck was a 7.3 so I hate to let it sit but I’ve been trying for almost a year on and off to figure it out and haven’t been able to. It was my daily before this and the only real issue it had was it would start shut off then I’d restart it and it would start right back up and keep running. It’s always had a small leak in the valley which I believe to have been the fuel bowl and probably that line but now it’s got a huge leak in that line and I can barely make it a mile or two without it shutting off and not making it home First thing I changed was the mechanical pump because that was my first thought and it drive home but was still having issues but I originally just thought it was air from changing the pump. Also changed all the soft lines and clamps that are on top of the motor.

how did you guys go about pulling that broken shaft out?
@RealHankShill
@RealHankShill 7 жыл бұрын
Just use a 15/16" on the alternator, turn it counter clockwise to rotate your motor, and it will pop up. Best done after you remove the bolts, but before you break it. Just loosen the bolts, then turn the motor, it will pop up and you pull it off. The cam will engage the anvil and push it up without the bolts to secure it.

What brand pump do you recommend? I went through 2 D AutoZone pumps, 1 Delphi that leaked immediately after install and a reboxed Carter that just started leaking less than 2 years and 5K miles. I heard Carter is the only supplier of these pumps now even though they went through a bad string a few years back when they took thier production overseas. Since then, they have brought production back to thier home in Illinois and have updated thier diaghram to withstand ULSD that is now used. The Motorcraft pump sells for around $130. How does this compare to a new Carter through DieselOrings for $80? Looks like Alliant also has thier own pump now. Is the price difference worth it?

I'm just curious about one thing? I wonder why you didn't simply open the fuel bowl moisture drain to drain out the fuel from the filter bowl before removing it? Saving some mess.. Or did you and not mention it? Speaking about the fuel pump in a van? That's exactly what I'm doing, first time and what a bitch but it all started with suspecting the pedestal O-rings as leaking oil but alas no evidence of that after removing the turbo. Did notice the turbo shaft has slight play though so ordered and am rebuilding the turbo. Then I noticed a bit of an oil puddle further up the valley and now suspect the HPOP fitting O-rings leaking so removing everything behind it because there is not a chance in hell to remove from the front that I can see, fuel pump, fuel filter bowl, all to get to the HPOP fittings and replacing the fuel pump at 127,000 miles, new fuel hoses, new O-rings for everything so as not have to do any of this for the duration of my ownership, because this job is a bastard.. Surprisingly though it's mostly labor, cost is incredibly reasonable for a DYI about $150 all in. In my case I need to do some cab work too in replacing some seats and removing some rust on the floor and adding some carpet, so have removed my seats for additional access, intend to actually cover and lay right up on top of the engine to reach in. In turbo removal have also noticed that the intake hose on one side was not even properly on it's seat with the clamp higher up on the hose and not tightened on the actual intake, so I'm looking forward to seeing how good this truck runs once these issues are repaired, it always seemed to have too much lag and not enough get up to me when it spooled up. It also has an upgraded turbo vein wheel to boot 66/88 already done before my ownership which is likely when they failed to reinstall the hose properly, sucks to be them because it couldn't have been running right so not much if any performance upgrade noticeable.

No much more labor and parts intensive. Fuel pump is like $70. Electric conversion if you did it yourself is going to be at least $500-700, and require much more work. Its certainly possible, but not easier.

@desertbob6835

NEVER remove a pump on a 7.3 unless you know the cam lobe is DOWN. That way, when you break the base and tappet off, just hit the starter to get the cam lobe up, then you can grab the tappet stem and pull it out. Removing fuel bowl is NOT necessary. Simply remove the two 13s holding the bowl down, rock it forward, and feed the hoses onto the nipples on its way down. DO NOT USE REGULAR FUEL HOSE. The "blue" hoses have a specified expansion under pressure and help smooth out pump pulsations that cause problems for pressure regulation in the HPOP. A 7.3 with off the shelf fuel lines will lope like an old 8V-71 Detroit with a maladjusted buffer screw.
@6point0powerstroker79
@6point0powerstroker79 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah that SOUNDS like a good idea to get the tappet out. .. unless it breaks small enough to go into cam valley while turning it and destroys the cam or the o-ring seat area.. ..

Question, When the bottom half of the fuel pump snapped off how did you extract it ?was that a magnet that was used after they dug out the O-ring to loosen it and pull straight up to prevent the plunger from dropping down? 12k is high unless your truck has a perfect interior good paint no leaks and no wiring issues like a lot of them had.... but in saying that... I have seen a 97 f350 flatbed 4x4 7.3 with 125k miles sell for $10,500 with almost no driver's seat left and some moron covered it in rhino lining material inside and out (and yes he did rhino the dash top too) the buyer gave me $750 just to take out the seats and dash and get the coating off the interior parts.... so you never know until you clean it up and list it for sale how much someone will pay for a fairly clean example...

Not gunna mention the older pumps that had a fuel modulator on that pump? Makes this way impossible.

soo in your shop.. if that plunger falls, do your technicians go after it? remove the oil pan? Motor is electric ;) Engine is combustion.

While the "tutorial" type of videos are great. Helps to many people with inadequate skills, knowledge and tools do the work at home. Need to keep work in the shops. Know I'm gonna get hate for saying that, but really. If you want it fixed right, and the firt time, take it to a pro and save money in the end!

Not all techs are like this. Very hard to find a good one. Will not argue that! Trying to beat the clock or not, if the tech breaks something, he replaces it, and pays for it. Techs have experience. You watching a video does not give you experience. Plastic will break no matter how careful you are.

@@87s15lt1 Come on Chris are you naive enough to believe that the majority of techs that accidentally brake parts admit it and pay for it. Took my 97 to a supposed reputable shoprecommended by Bill close to his because he was to busy on the 6.4's &6.7's And they were supposedly specialist. They didn't repair oil leak, a fuel leak developed and it ran rough after getting it back. Iv'e done work on my truck before always did research to go over procedures and because IT'S MY TRUCK, was meticulous in the process of doing the work. A tech gets payed hourly and many are honest but there are some who just don't care .

GM also came out with an electric throttle on the 6.5 Detroit trucks in 94', it's funny you never hear of an old power stroke or 6.5L killing anybody. Granted it's probably because the owners have common sense
