Which among Aristotle’s four causes is/are recognised by modern science?
@theikoala63642 жыл бұрын
In order of acceptance it would be Efficient Material Formal Final In that order, the formal and final causes are more abstract as concepts and have less scientific application, especially the final cause requires a subscription to the idea of teleology whereas scientists tend to take a more mechanistic approach to the universe. The formal cause could be argued to be a blueprint in some way, but Aristotle intended the formal cause to create subscription to the hylomorphistic approach of form + matter, which scientists may not find appeasing as they basically believe form in natural objects is created by chance. Generally science tends to explore the material cause of certain things, ie to identify what they are composed of, and the efficient cause which is what people typically instinctively think of when we use the word "cause" is modern day. Science typically asks questions about what something is made of or how it comes to be so the material and efficient causes are widely accepted by science
